Chapter Six

~Jake~

So this afternoon was a lot to process and to be honest, I can’t believe she was treated so badly after turning, any other pack would have been happy that she was the white wolf, then Alpha Caleb turns up unannounced and he knew about Payton, even before I said it, I could feel Payton’s unease around him. Then he allows vampires on my territory, bloody thirsty monsters, if he had asked we could have trained against the good ones in our world, they have been helping us for years, as we help them with attacking rogues, but now he brings the bad ones here and lets them loose. Payton and Jamie jump into action before the rest of us, she cuts her finger and they train their bloodthirsty eyes on her, and Jamie uses their distraction to kill them. After Caleb is all cocky and knowing, the way he looks at Payton makes my wolf so angry he wants to kill him, Payton is also struggling to control her wolf, and they seem to have a good relationship, the easy shifts, that comes from control and understanding of the wolf. Sometimes Payton will look like she’s far away and I know she’s talking to her wolf. Jamie makes her take off, and we bicker about who follows in the end, I know he is here for his mate and that I need to learn how to handle Payton alone. I chase off after her and everyone else goes inside. Probably to discuss how stupid I am for allowing his man on my land, but the other alternative is allowing Payton over there, and that I do not feel comfortable with, and I am sure Jamie will agree with me. I follow Payton’s scent to the pond just to see the Goddess appear in front of here. Payton seems to be unfazed by the Goddess showing up.

“Payton, my little one, how are you?” the Goddess speaks,

“I’m doing ok Goddess, I told Jake the truth about me, he seemed to understand, I feel safe here knowing he knows everything, but Alpha Caleb just left and tested me against vampires, starving newly turned vampires, Goddess, I don’t know what to do!” Payton falls to her knee’s sobbing, “They turned and starved them, Goddess, they used to be half-human and half-wolf, their wolves never presented, Goddess, please tell me what to do.”

“You are already doing it, my dear. You will train them to protect themselves, not all the pack know about Caleb so teach them, there will come a day his true colours shall appear, then his pack will turn to you, just as the Black wolf army will turn to you in their time of need. Payton, you and Jake will be the Alpha’s of all the wolfs, there will be no more alphas except your lineage. Jake, my dear one, please come closer, your fates are entwined you need to hear this too.” I can’t listen to the Goddess, she is so beautiful, I do step forward into the clearing around the pond.

“Goddess, I don’t believe I am ready for what you need from me” I point out, Alpha to everyone, this has never been done before, I do not want the responsibility to fall on me like that, on Payton.

“You will never be ready my dear, it’s like having children, you can’t be ready until they are here until you truly understand the task that has been given you, I have appointed a leader in the vampires too, their names are Jasmine and Peter, they will be your counterparts, and you will come across them in your time of need. They are newly blessed, and therefore will need your guidance. You will be ready my little ones, Evil is afoot, there will be many challenges ahead, but you will conquer them as a team. I must go now, be safe my children” with that she steps back into the water and disappears, just like she wasn’t here at all. Payton stands at the edge of the water still crying.

“Payton,” I say, and she slightly turns, and murmurs something. “Is everything ok?”

“No-one can know she came today, ok? This is the second time I have seen her, once while I was unconscious, and today, something big is coming we need to prepare but the pack must not know how bad it is until they need too, we can’t allow them to panic.”

“We can’t no, we will train hard. Payton, I am here for you” I smile at her and take her hand as we walk through the forest. Payton seems to be on high alert like something is out there, the shadows dance and I wonder if we are being watched, but she starts to relax so I assume we are out alone. We go upstairs and I help her into her PJ’s and she instantly falls asleep, I tuck a loose strand of hair behind her ear and tell her I will be back before long. I head downstairs and everyone is in the lounge, I grab a snack from the kitchen and join them, I sit on the armchair.

Jamie instantly jumps up “where is she?”

“Asleep,” I say, “She used up her energy wandering around the forest, she needed to sleep” I smile at him.

“Oh yeah, that would make sense, she been out of the fighting game a while”

“Erm, she hasn’t Jamie, she asked if the Vampire could know where she was because they kept fighting her, plus rogue’s, since she left, she hasn’t stopped, or rested”

“Oh no. I should never have been caught. Oh god, I was meant to protect her, the goddess must be so angry with me.”

“Jamie, I would doubt the Goddess could be angry with you, she is alive and happy and well, she knows you tried your hardest for Payton’s safety. The Goddess knows I am sure of it.” He nods a little, I could almost sense his inner turmoil. It is clear he loves her, he is very protective, but he acts more like a brother than a lover. I wonder what part he has to play in all this, he is an amazing fighter, he is devoted to her, maybe he is meant to be beta or her protector. She doesn’t seem to need protecting

“thank you”.

“so what were we talking about?”

“Having Caleb’s men here to train. It isn’t a good idea Jake” Steph speaks up, she’s angry. Feel sorry for Nick later, he will have to listen to her moan and moan about my choices.

“Your right Steph it isn’t a good idea I hate the idea, but here we can control where they go, who they interact with, we cannot guarantee any of our packs safety in their territory.” I point out. I had thought about this. “We don’t know about their pack, whether his pack knows how bad he is, if they do, well we will cross that bridge when it comes to it, if they don’t, then they need to be trained to take care of themselves.”

“That’s very well thought out Jacob. Since Payton has appeared you have become the leader, I have been pushing you towards. I doubt she even said anything to you about them coming did she?”

“She was angry, so we didn’t talk. I just followed her about to ensure she was safe while she ranted” I shrug and look and Nick.

“I was visited by the Goddess once before Payton escaped from her torture, she told me that Payton’s mate needed her and that if she stayed, she would succumb to the darkness that was present in the Alpha. I knew she wouldn’t ever say yes to darkness, but the Goddess was worried. She told me I had to come too, to protect Payton, to help her find you so that I could find my mate. My mate was with you, in your pack. I don’t think I would be rewarded with my mate now, but I am still here to protect Pay. She’s like a sister to me, we were always so close, even from children, we joked we were twins.” He smiles at that, and I instantly feel safer knowing how he loves Payton.

“Jamie, the Goddess will know what you had to endure she will still bless you with a mate. Do you think your mate could be in the pack?”

“I would have thought so Jake, I hope so anyway, they are meant to be close to you,” he says.

“Oh, well depends on what it means close to me, I have other two other sisters, and a brother, or an Ex?”

“I thought Ex too but that was the girl I met already” he shrugged, “Payton told me, but Payton doesn’t know about your other sisters, so I doubt it’s that, if they were close to you she would know about them right? Maybe its proximity, like someone who works in the house?”

“Maybe, I didn’t mention other family members, because they were travelling, I’ll text them to come back, we will need them here for what’s to come anyway”

I pull out my phone and text the family to come back.

Hey mum and dad, so I’ve been calling for the last couple of days and we keep missing each other, the family needs to return to the compound immediately, be safe.

Mum here, Ok, will return the day after tomorrow, that’s the earliest flight, have someone pick us up at the airport at 9 am. Be safe.

They replied straight away, and I arranged for Nick and Steph to pick them up.

“They will be here the day after tomorrow, so I’ll call a pack meeting once they are back and you’ll get a chance to meet everyone then. Jamie, if you’re up for it, do you mind training the warriors for fighting tomorrow? I was going to ask Stephanie and Elizbeth to take Payton shopping to get a few bits?”

“Yeah sure, that way I can feel useful to the pack, I’d like to be inducted into the pack too like Josh and Marc?”

He wants to stay regardless that’s interesting, “Yeah sure, I’ll set it up so you're all welcomed at the same time.”

He just nods, then mentions about going to bed, and I agree. We head up and I go to go into my room but it doesn’t feel right being without her, so I get changed into lounge bottoms, and climb into Payton’s bed, she immediately moves so she is cuddled up to me and I fall instantly asleep.
