Chapter 10

338 Words
I continued watching Conrad and the stranger having a fight. It seemed very tense, everything said in hushed tones. Eventually, the stranger left, causing Conrad to look my way. Our eyes locked and I sheepishly looked away. Why did I feel guilty? Conrad was basically stalking me every day, so why did I feel like I had stumbled into a very private conversation with him and the stranger? Hoping that by some miracle Conrad hadn’t felt the electricity jolt when our eyes met, I made slow movements, getting off the bench and was headed to the nearest trash can to dispose of my iced coffee and bagel wrapper, when I felt something brush past my arm. I jumped back in fright, looked up and saw his familiar eyes. It was Conrad, he must’ve used super speed to get here from where he was, and then I realized I didn’t really know anything about being a vampire. I was assuming he had super speed, but I wondered what else he could do. He kept watching me as I pulled myself together, his eyes slowly roaming over my body, as if to make sure I wasn’t hurt. Gathering the courage I needed, I eventually said, “Who was that?” “Oh, uh, just an old friend. More of an acquaintance,” he said. “Really? And what were you speaking about?” I retorted. He looked into my piercing eyes and hesitated for a moment. It almost looked like he might tell me the truth, but his softened features grew hard again when he said, “Nothing, it was nothing Zoey.” I looked at him, disappointed. I thought that since he had told me the truth about him and, well, me, I could actually trust him. I was slowly realizing that that wasn’t the truth. With my guard back up, I turned away from him and slowly made my way back home. I didn’t need to look back. I knew I had his shadow, chasing me from behind.
