Chapter 4 Maya’s POV I stood in front of my mirror and checked my outfit one last time. I was wearing a grey pencil skirt, a white-sleeved shirt, and my hair was pulled into a professional bun. I was all ready for my new job. Despite the whole drama in my life from the past day, I tried to look happy because I didn’t want anything to ruin this new opportunity. After the episode with Marcus last night, I hoped he wouldn’t show up again because I was done with him. As I caught the small smile tugging on my lips, I felt a genuine surge of joy. I was finally moving on. Jade Sports Management was the biggest firm in the city, known for its exceptional performance and thousands of collaborators. Although I didn’t know the owner of the company, I knew that if I landed this, Marcus Blackthorn would be nothing but a forgotten memory. I am finally about to get my dream job. I arrived at the towering building about fifteen minutes early because I didn’t want to miss anything. As I parked my car and grabbed my credentials, I smiled widely, displaying the dimple on my left chin. Filled with positivity, I got out of my car and walked towards the entrance, but when my gaze settled on a figure, I stopped dead in my tracks. Standing near the entrance was a man who I knew too well already. He was wearing a suit, his hair perfectly styled as he was pacing back and forth, a phone pressed to his ear as he barked orders at someone on the other end. I didn’t need to look too hard to remember him. He was the man from the gala. The arrogant fellow that thought he could talk down to me. What was he doing here? I wondered if he was a client or just a worker, but either way, seeing him brought back the sting of being called pathetic. My happy mood vanished and was quickly replaced by a sharp, defensive mood. If he was here, I wasn't going to let him think he had won. With renewed energy, I marched towards the entrance with my heels clanging loudly on the pavement, but even then, he didn’t seem to notice me as his attention was on his call. "Still acting like the king of the sidewalk, I see," I snapped as I slowly walked by him. He froze, his phone lowering slowly from his ear as his jaw tightened. He turned his head to look at me and his eyes flickered with recognition. "You," he rasped, his voice low and deep, just like last night. "Yes, me," I retorted, tilting my head back to meet his gaze. "I see you managed to find a suit that hasn’t been touched by a pathetic lady, and I hope you stay out of trouble this time.” I watched his gaze darken with anger. "You have a very big mouth for someone who’s so insignificant," he hissed. "And you have a very large ego for someone who probably spends his nights drinking alone in an empty apartment, all alone," I shot back with a sweet, mocking smile. "Have a terrible morning, you arrogant prick." I didn’t wait for a response. I walked through the doors, feeling a rush of satisfaction. After letting Marcus trample over my very head, I wouldn’t make such mistakes again. I checked in with the secretary, who was sitting behind a huge desk. "Maya Willy? Yes, Mr. Jade is expecting you," she said, gesturing toward the seating area. "Please wait here for a few minutes. You will be called soon." I smiled warmly at her before going to take a seat as my nerves slowly rose. Mr. Jade, the legendary founder of the company. Although most people knew nothing about him, it was widely known he built this place all by himself without help. He is the type of man that deserves respect, not the prick I just cussed at by the entrance. Why would they even allow such an arrogant fellow in here? A group of men clad in suits walked into the company and headed for the elevator, but I barely paid them any mind. I was lost in my own thoughts, praying my interview goes smoothly because this was all I had left. Ten minutes later, the secretary nodded to me. "You can go in now. Top floor, the corner office." “Thank you,” I muttered, heaving a deep breath as I tried not to freak out. I took the elevator and, just like the secretary had described, I found his door. I knocked cautiously and heard a loud "Enter." I slowly pushed the door open as I put on my professional smile, ready to claim my job. I saw a figure sitting behind the huge desk and my nerves skyrocketed. After closing the door after me, I finally turned to face him with a smile still on my face. "Good morning, I'm Maya Willy, I'm here for the final—" The words died in my throat as my eyes widened in fear. Sitting behind the massive desk was the man I had pulled down for a kiss at the gala. The same man I bumped into a few minutes ago and lashed out at, unprovoked. He looked up slowly, his expression shifting from a professional look to one of recognition and then, shock. Mr. Jade? There was a moment of silence as none of us knew what to say. Finally, he spoke up first. “Miss…” he trailed off, glancing at a document by his side. “Willy, is it?” He said, his voice dropping in a tone that made the hairs on my arms stand. I tried to answer as I searched for my lost voice, but nothing seemed to come out. Only when his brows raised in impatience could I speak up. “S-sir,” I croaked, my throat completely parched. “It’s a small world, isn’t it?” He asked, with a huge smirk on his face. I stiffened.
