Daniella slowly became aware of her environment. She felt cold and heavy and uncomfortable. Darkness was all around her, and from somewhere over her right shoulder there was a constant, regular beeping. She lifted her head, and licked at her dry lips. As her eyes adjusted, she realized, it wasn’t totally dark. There was a dull glow from the monitors behind her, and a ribbon of light coming from under a door to her left. She felt her heart stutter in her chest, and her fingers clawed for something to hold onto, fisting into a knitted blanket and white sheets.
