“Oh, I know,” Lauressa said, “You two could help me move everything!” She clapped her hands together, a smile spreading on her lips. Gale went to protest, but Felix’s glare stopped him.
“We would love to help, Lauressa,” Felix said flatly while staring at Gale the entire time. Gale let out a low growl. He looked at how excited Lauressa was as she fantasied about her friends helping her move into the pack house. His wolf cooed happily, so he shrugged.
“Good idea,” he said jovially, firing daggers at Felix with a smirk on his face. Both girls cheered giddily and dove into Lauressa’s room. Gale and Felix elbowed one another as they followed through the door.
Lauressa’s room was small, with one door just inside the entrance. Situated in the main room was her bed, tiny hob and oven, a wardrobe with a couple of draws and a tatty boxing bag suspended from the ceiling. Gale was aghast just looking at the place. He assumed that it was her bathroom that was behind the second door, but he didn’t want to move too much, his shoulders already taking up enough room as it was.
Lauressa pulled out a suitcase from under her bed and her and Freida began emptying the wardrobe. Felix helped box up the food that was sitting on the side, as well as any cleaning products that were under the sink. Lauressa trotted over to Gale, squeezing past him to get into the bathroom.
“Could you please get that?” She asked him, pointing to the boxing bag. He nodded solemnly, reaching up and unclipping it from its hoist. Felix passed him a screwdriver from under the sink. He undone the screws to release the bracket then placed it and the screwdriver inside the box as well. He moved the bag near the entrance, trying to keep out of the way as the other three whizzed around the room.
Before long, everything was together, either in a suitcase or a box. The room barely looked any different, with so little content in it already. However, Lauressa was over the moon with how much tidier it appeared. She waltzed up to Gale, dragging her suitcase behind her.
“Shall I bring my food with me?” She asked, “To cover some of the meals I’ll be eating.” Gale peered down at the box that Felix was holding; most of it was tinned food, and not a very good brand at that. He felt his stomach wretch.
“No, its fine, we have plenty of food at the packhouse.” He replied, doing his best to keep his breakfast down. Lauressa shrugged.
“Ok, we will leave it with the rest of the unranked members, unless you or Felix need it?” She asked, now looking at Freida. Freida shook her head in response. “We’ll donate it to them then, same with the cleaning stuff.” She smiled happily. Gale breathed an internal sigh of relief at her words.
He lifted the bag up onto his shoulder and opened the door, edging his way through. Lauressa followed him, dragging along her suitcase, followed by Freida carrying one box, then Felix who was carrying two. Lauressa closed the door behind them.
“You two best take all the bedding back to your new room, Gale and I can take the remaining things by ourselves” Lauressa laughed. Freida and Felix laughed in response and nodded. Gale took the box from Freida, so she was able to collect their duvets, tucking a couple of pillows under Felix’s arms. All four of them made their way to the dormitory services, dropping off Lauressa’s room key and the boxes of donations.
“Wait a moment,” Gale called out to the unranked assistant, who stopped pulling the boxes off the counter. “Thank you, I just need the bracket out of that box,” he said as he nodded his head towards the cleaning product box. The assistant looked inside, pulling out the metal device and placing it in the box in Gale’s arms. “Thank you,” he said. The assistant nodded and continued taking the boxes away.
Felix and Freida swapped the pillows and duvets between one another, with Felix now carrying the awkwardly large blanket. They exited the building and paused on the courtyard.
“Thank you both for your help, I’ll promise to not to disappear again,” Lauressa chuckled, Felix and Freida chuckling back. Lauressa and Freida hugged, struggling between the pillows. Felix and Gale nodded at one another, then the two pairs walked in opposite directions.
Lauressa and Gale arrived at the packhouse. Gale mind linked with Archibald for him to meet them at the entrance with a couple of Omegas. Lauressa gave him an annoyed glare when she saw the three wolves waiting for them.
“I said I didn’t need help,” She whispered bitterly.
“You may not have, but I certainly do,” Gale replied, huffing slightly as he readjusted the bag on his shoulder. Lauressa giggled at him.
“You silly beast,” she said, shaking her head while still giggling. Archibald and the Omegas walked down the stairs to meet them.
“All this to the guest suite?” Archibald asked, eying up the couple.
“Yes please, Archibald.” Gale said, exasperated as he dropped the bag down. The two Omegas looked at one another and grinned.
“Certainly, Alpha heir,” Archibald replied, snapping his fingers to the Omegas who collected the bag and box from Gale and the suitcase from Lauressa.
“What are we going to do then?” Lauressa pouted, watching her suitcase travel up the stairs to the pack house.
“Its a surprise.” Gale smiled, “Thank you Archibald.” The two men nodded to one another, with Archibald turning on his heels and following the Omegas inside. Gale took Lauressa’s hand and walked her to the rear of the building. Lauressa stumbled when trying to keep up with him, he was moving much quicker than before.
“Where are we going, Gale?” She asked, watching her footing as they walked over tree roots and stones.
“We’re going to go for a run!” He exclaimed. He hadn’t gone for a run in so long, having to deal with the multiple duties his father had given to him over the past couple of years. Lauressa sighed, relieved it wasn’t something else that would cause people to stare at her again.
They walked into the surrounding forest, the building disappearing behind the thick trees. Gale was getting ready to remove his clothes when Lauressa stopped him.
"Wait! How are we going to communicate once we're wolves?" She asked, having never been out for a run in the forests before. Unranked pick members were restricted by a lot of things, one being that they could only shift when supervised. Gale furrowed his eyebrows.
"Sorry, Laurie, I forgot about that. It's been a few years since I was in my twentieth year." He laughed. "Here, it's quite easy to mind link."
"Easy for you to say," Lauressa pouted. Gale smiled, taking her hands in his.
"Right, you need to picture the person you want to speak to. Picture them nice and clearly. And then just speak in your mind, but at them. Try on me now." Gale explained. Lauressa's face reflected confusion, but she clicked her neck and began to concentrate. She narrowed her eyes, nothing happened. She closed them, picturing Gale in her mind. She spoke, but there was no reply. She left out a frustrated growl.
"It's ok, don't worry. Let me speak to you, and then try and reply. Maybe that will help?" He suggested, stroking her hands. She nodded, closing her eyes again to focus. Gale smiled and closed his eyes as well.
There was a moment's silence, Gale and Lauressa standing in the forest as the wind blew softly past. Lauressa was breathing deeply, waiting for something to happen. With nothing coming through, she began to open her eyes when a tiny voice called out to her.
"Laurie.... Laurie can you hear me? Gale's voice came. Her face was shocked and she wiggled her hands with excitement. Gale smiled, continuing to speak. "Don't lose focus, you need to link back yet." Lauressa nodded, steadying herself once more. She pictured Gale, following his voice through her mind.
"Hello? Gale?" She asked, unsure if she had even successfully broken through to him. She waited for his response, anticipation coursing through her mind.
"Hello beautiful." Came his response. Her eyes shot open, a smile stretching over her face as she looked at Gale. She shook his hands, summoning him to open his eyes to look at her too. He did so, smiling softly.
"Well done," he said out loud, pulling her closer and kissing her head. "Shall we try linking as wolves now?" He asked, letting go of her hands. She nodded, taking a step back from him.
Gale began to undress, pulling up his shirt and tossing it to the side. Lauressa couldn't help but watch as his muscles flexed with every movement. She went to unzip her dress, but embarrassment flushed her face. Gale noticed she wasn't undressing and looked up at her.
"Ah, I see." He said before turning around, facing away from her. Lauressa thanked him, now removing her dress and underwear, leaving them in a nice pile on the floor. She looked around as she remained crouching, scanning the area to make sure no one else could see them. With a few steady breaths, she began her shift.
A few tufts of grey fur began to sprout out of her arms, legs and torso. Her face began to elongate and her canines grew. The internal sound of bones snapping and realigning rang out in her mind, that was her least favourite part of the shift. Once she had finished, she shook her body, her grey fur simmering in the sun breaking through the tree line. She turned to Gale, but now a black wolf stood before her. He was almost twice the size of her, dwarfing her grey wolf.
Gale purred at the sight of Lauressa, strutting around her body as he examined her. She pulled her legs and tail in, trying to cover up her body.
"You have fur on, silly," He mused through the mind link, "but you look stunning." Lauressa bent her head down, if a wolf could blush she knew that's what she would be doing. She stood up, her tail wagging as she trotted around Gale's wolf, inspecting him as well.
"You look pretty good too," she replied. He laughed back through the link, confirming that everything was working as it should do.
He picked up their clothes, tucking them into a bag hanging on a nearby tree. The forest was filled with them, to make sure shifting was as convenient as possible.
He turned to face Lauressa, who was sniffing nearby flowers. Her fur glistened in the sun and her eyes sparkled. Their black depths speaking more words than he could ever say. He flexed his pads on the grass, gracefully trotting over to her as she explored. He lifted up his paw and jabbed her in the side. Lauressa whipped her head round, confusion in her wolf's eyes.
"You're it," he said through the link, before spinning and bolting off into the forest.
"Oh no you don't," Lauressa laughed back, running after him.
The wind blew through Lauressa's fur, this sensation all but new to her. The pads of her feet were soft and light, barely making a sound as she raced through the foliage. Gale occasionally looked over his shoulder, sprinting forward every time Lauressa got too close.
They ran for at least an hour, exploring the far corners of the territory. Lauressa began to lose stamina, slowing down to almost a trot. Gale noticed her absence behind him and also slowed. He guided her to a nearby river, allowing her to rest and drink.
"That was fun," she linked, crouching down by the water and lapping it up.
"I'm pleased you enjoyed it," Gale cooed. He walked up beside her and laid by her side. She finished drinking and laid down before turning her head towards him.
"Tell me about you then." She said, her eyes penetrating into his.
"Pardon?" He mused, his wolf tilting its head.
"I mean, I told you about why I wanted to be a warrior, so I wanted to get to know you." She replied, laying on her side and kicking her feet out. With a stretch, she curled up. Gale got up and began nudging her with his snout.
"Don't you be falling asleep," he said, jabbing his snout on her side. A delighted bark came from her wolf as it wiggled on the ground, her feet kicking out, trying to push him away.
"I'm not!" she insisted, her wolf now purring at his touch. She rolled over, resting her head on her paws as she looked over to him. Gale nodded, mirroring her pose.
"What did you want to know then?" Gale relented, rolling his eyes. Lauressa wagged her tail and extended her neck, laying it fully on the floor.
"Anything," she purred. Gale adjusted his feet, padding on the ground and leaning on his paws.
"Well, you've obviously met my father and brother. My father can be quite temperamental at times, I try to avoid him when he's in a bad mood." Lauressa's eyes glazed over as she listened to him. "But Nik is pretty cool. We are both friends and brothers. My mother unfortunately passed when he was twelve and I was sixteen. It was a hard time, I don't think my father fully recovered from it. But he's tried his best, I think I turned out ok." He ended with a joyful tone, trying not to sound too pained as he spoke. Lauressa listened intently.
"Ok is about right," she linked back, snorting to herself. Gale flopped his head to the side before shaking it.
"Very funny," he said. Lauressa's wolf wheezed, tapping her feet in front of her. "Archibald has been there for the last twenty years, he has certainly helped father with raising my brother and I. He's very relaxed, knows things about me that even I don't know."
"I hope to know you that well too, one day," Lauressa said sincerely, reaching out her paw and pressing it against Gale's. He leaned down and licked hers, earning himself a purr from her wolf.
Gale looked to the sky, seeing how the sun had moved across it. He rose to his feet, with Lauressa following his movement with her head.
"It's getting on, we should get ready for dinner," he said, staring down at Lauressa. She rolled around, batting her feet about.
"Do we have to?" she whined, "it's so nice out here." Gale bent down and nuzzled into her neck, causing excited barks to erupt from her.
"We can do this again, don't worry," He mused. Lauressa nodded, rolling over and getting to her feet.
They both ran off together, Gale leading the way back to the tree holding their clothes. They both faced the other way as they shifted, though Gale stole glances at her over his shoulder. His eyes traced her curves, making his wolf purr deeply. They got dressed, linked hands and walked back into the town.
