Galenos was sleeping in his bed when a knock came from his door. He growled lowly, pulling the cover over his head. Another knock. He didn’t respond. Then another knock. He laid there growling, pushing the duvet against his ears.
“Master Galenos, please open the door. Your father is requesting your presence.” Came a voice from the other side of the door. Oh, I bet he has, Galenos cursed under his breath. After a few moments passed, another knock came from the door.
“Alright!” He roared out, throwing his cover aside before striding from his bedroom to the main entrance door. He tore it open, almost breaking the lock from not twisting the handle. “I will be there soon, Archibald,” he said, glaring at the man on the other side of doorway. Before him was an older gentleman, wearing a black suit. He nodded curtly then turned to his side and strode off. Galenos growled again before slamming the door shut.
He pressed his back against the door, running his fingers through his hair. He let out an aspirated sigh as he looked over to the clock on the wall. It was 9.30. Why did father insist that he had to attend this thing? Get a mate, get a mate. It’s all he ever went on about. I’m only 26 for Goddess' sake, Galenos thought, questions plaguing his mind as he walked into the shower.
The hot water washed over him, cleansing his mind of his thoughts. The steam that filled the room engulfed him in its hazy heat. He rested his head against the wall, placing his arms above it to help balance himself. He stared aimlessly at nothing, waiting for something to happen that never did.
Unsure how long had passed, Galenos eventually decided to remove himself from the shower and start getting dressed. With his towel around his waist, he began searching for something reasonable to wear. He didn’t want anything too showy; he already knew that nearly everyone in attendance would be looking at his family and him. He began muttering to himself, his father’s words invading his mind once more.
A knock at the door broke his train of thought. He sighed loudly before waiting for Archibald’s voice.
“Master Galenos, are you coming? Your father is still waiting.” Galenos clicked his tongue, before smirking to himself as he waded towards the door. He opened it, his smirk still on his face as he let his towel drop. Archibald went to speak but stopped at the sight of Galenos’ naked figure.
“Tell father I will be five minutes,” Galenos said, before walking away from the doorway, leaving the door open. Archibald nodded, his eyes still wide in horror as he walked down the corridor. That boy is going to be the death of me, he thought to himself.
Returning to his wardrobe, Galenos decided on a white shirt and black trousers; it would do. He then returned to the bathroom, brushing his black hair back into some sort of style. He stared at his reflection, his piercing blue eyes staring back at him. With a final sigh, he left his room.
He traced his way along the corridors, not even thinking of which path he was taking. His father’s words still playing over and over in his mind. It wasn’t long before he approached the large wooden doors of his father’s office. With his heart heavy, he knocked on the door.
“Enter,” came the voice within as the door opened almost on qué. Opposite the doors was a large, oaken desk, and sat behind it was a large, oaken man. He had broad shoulders, his suit pulled tight across them and his chest. His black hair was neatly held in place, matching well with his chiselled face. His eyes lit up when Galenos entered the office.
“You summoned me, Alpha?” Galenos asked flatly, strolling slowly inside.
“Galenos, my son, about time you rose from that pit of yours,” Alpha Eugene responded just as flatly.
“It’s just Gale, father.” Gale responded, shivering at hearing his full name uttered from his father’s lips. His wolf paced inside his head, anxious for what conversation lay ahead. Eugene smiled widely; an eyebrow raised at his son.
“Nonsense, Galenos, now come take a seat, we have matters to discuss.” He waved his hand at Archibald who was standing at the door, gesturing for him to leave. With a nod, Archibald exited the room, closing the door behind him.
Gale met his father’s gaze, rolling his eyes before walking and slumping down in the chair in front of the desk. This earned him a tut from his father, who simply raised his eyebrow higher before turning his attention to the paperwork on his desk.
“32 new unranked wolves will be tested today, exciting, isn’t it?” Eugene asked rhetorically, knowing of his son’s distaste for the tests. “I am eager to see what new talent our Omega Carrol has mustered up for us. Hopefully we have some worth here in this pack of ours.” He stated, glancing over the pages before him. Each page detailed a different unranked wolf, what their skills were and how Ms Carrol felt they were developing in their tutoring.
“And what does Black Moon hope to reap from this years’ testing” Gale responded, trying to sound interested in the happenings of the pack. Eugene smiled in response, looking up from the papers.
“It seems we may be graced with some new warriors, just from reading these reports. It seems we have some very determined young individuals among the aged unranked. Just what we need, they’ll serve the pack well.” He responded jovially, returning his attention to the documents.
“Any other roles of interest, like healers maybe?” Gale asked in a leading tone, gesturing to the pages on his father’s desk. Without looking up from the page he was reading, Eugene responded.
“Yes maybe, we always need those, but it’s the warriors I am really keen on.”
Gale rolled his eyes, slumping further into the chair. It was good to keep his father talking about anything else, knowing that if he had a moment to think about something else the subject would change to that of a mate. His eyes cast over the documents as well, casually reading some of the details.
A knock came at the door; his father responded with the word ‘enter’, bellowed out again. This time, a younger wolf entered. He had the same black hair and bright blue eyes as Gale, though his face was much more chiselled like Eugene’s.
“Nikandros!” Eugene called out, lifting his head up again from the pages in his hands. The man who had entered sighed, walking over to the chair next to Gale and sitting down.
“Nik, just Nik, please father,” Nik whined, knowing Gale would have had the same conversation upon entering the office as well.
“What is it with you boys and not liking your full names? Your mother chose them especially for both of you. That is why I use them.” Eugene tutted, compiling the documents together into a neat stack on his desk. Gale and Nik stole a glance at once another before turning their attention back to their father. “You came just at the right time.” He said, looking over to Nik.
“How so?” Nik mused while rubbing his fingers against his temple.
“The testing area is almost ready,” Eugene said, clapping his hands together vigorously. Gale rolled his eyes; his younger brother was much more interested in these games than he was.
“Anyone of any interest, father?” Nik replied, not knowing that his father had already covered this subject with Gale earlier.
“It seems we may be getting new warriors!” Eugene said just as enthusiastically as before. He glanced over at the clock on his desk, the time was now 12:05. “You boys have wasted the whole morning in bed, I hope you’re satisfied. It’s time to go down to the arena.” He continued, not hiding his mild disgust in their apathy. The boys smirked at one another once more before getting to their feet. Their father moved around the desk, leading them out of the office as they followed.
Just as Gale thought, all eyes were on them as they exited the pack house and moved towards their seats. He tried to focus on walking forward, but he could feel the heat expressing from his cheeks as nervous tears pricked at his eyes.
They sat down; their eyes now focused on the arena before them. They sat next to the judges’ quarters, so they could have input on any decisions the judges may or may not make. As the clocked hit 12:30, the claxon sounded, commencing the tests to begin.
The group of unranked wolves marched forward, making their way towards the knowledge arena. The mental tasks were always first, leaving the combat task until last. As the group moved past the Alpha family, a scent brushed against Gale’s nose. He inhaled deeply, his wolf even taking an interest in the smell. He leaned forward, trying to distinguish the scent from the group, trying to identify who’s scent it was that was so captivating.
The group began their knowledge test, sitting at their individual tables as they scribbled on their papers. Gale always found these tasks interesting, he felt it showed which wolves were able to maintain focus and drive; much more than what the combat tasks showed.
But his focus was hard to hold as the scent swam around him. He and his wolf both felt the pull, felt the urge from the smell. They confirmed to one another in unison:
“Mate.”
