Chapter 7: The Call

573 Words
Mia woke up to the sound of her phone ringing. She groggily reached for it, checking the caller ID before answering. "Hello?" "Mia, it's Ethan," came the voice on the other end. "I need to talk to you." Mia sat up in bed, suddenly wide awake. "Is everything okay?" "I don't know," Ethan said. "Can we meet up and talk?" Mia hesitated for a moment, wondering what could be so urgent that Ethan would call her in the middle of the night. But she couldn't say no to him. "Sure," she said, getting out of bed and grabbing a sweater. "Where do you want to meet?" "Can you come to my place?" Ethan asked. "It's just a few blocks from yours." Mia agreed, and they arranged to meet in twenty minutes. As she made her way to Ethan's apartment, she couldn't help but wonder what was going on. Had something happened with the film? Was Ethan okay? When she arrived at his building, Ethan was waiting outside. He looked tired and anxious, and Mia's heart sank at the sight of him. "Thanks for coming," he said, leading her up to his apartment. As they sat down on the couch, Ethan took a deep breath and looked at Mia with serious eyes. "There's something I need to tell you," he said. "Something that's been on my mind for a while now." Mia's heart started pounding in her chest. What was he going to say? "Ethan, what is it?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper. Ethan hesitated for a moment, as if trying to find the right words. Finally, he spoke. "I think I'm falling in love with you, Mia," he said, looking straight into her eyes. Mia's heart skipped a beat. She had never expected to hear those words from Ethan, and yet they felt like the answer to everything she had been feeling lately. "Ethan, I..." she started, but he cut her off. "I know, I know," he said, his voice tinged with desperation. "It's crazy and it doesn't make sense, but I can't help how I feel. I've been trying to fight it, but every time I see you, every time I talk to you, I just..." He trailed off, looking defeated. Mia reached out to touch his hand, feeling a sense of tenderness and affection for him that she couldn't deny. "Ethan, I feel the same way," she said, her voice shaking slightly. "But we can't act on these feelings. You're the lead actor, and I'm the assistant director. It could ruin the film, and our careers." Ethan looked at her with a mixture of longing and sadness. "I know," he said. "But I had to tell you. I couldn't keep it inside any longer." Mia nodded, feeling a sense of sadness and frustration wash over her. She knew that they couldn't be together, at least not right now. But the fact that Ethan felt the same way she did was a comfort, and a source of hope for the future. As she left Ethan's apartment and made her way back home, Mia couldn't stop thinking about what he had said. She knew that their feelings for each other were complicated, and that they would have to tread carefully if they wanted to make it work. But for the first time in a long time, Mia felt a sense of excitement and possibility about what the future might hold.
