Chapter 5: The days that followed moved faster than Lena expected. Her face was on tabloid covers, her name hashtagged beside Damien Blackwell’s in breathless headlines: > #PowerCoupleGoals Is Damien Finally in Love? Lena Hart: The Fiancée No One Saw Coming. She tried not to read them, but they were everywhere—on café TVs, on the phones of strangers on the subway, even on the newsstand near her old apartment. It was strange, seeing her reflection in glossy ink like she belonged to a different world now. In truth, she didn’t know where she belonged anymore. --- At Blackwell Tower, the engagement façade was tightening like a second skin. Public events. Charity appearances. Paparazzi trails. Every time she thought she might breathe, there was another dinner or press moment or Damien whispering, “Smile like I just told you I love you.” And she would. Because she was playing the part. But sometimes—just sometimes—it didn’t feel like acting. --- One evening, Lena was pacing the penthouse, barefoot and frustrated. She’d just gotten off a call with her sister’s doctor. The surgery had been moved up. Good news—except they needed the money sooner. And Damien hadn’t signed the next transfer yet. She found him in his study, on a call, his voice low and clipped. She waited. Then waited more. Finally, she knocked on the glass wall. He held up a single finger—wait. Lena’s blood boiled. She walked in, anyway. “Excuse me,” he said into the phone. “I’ll call you back.” He hung up slowly and turned. “Is it urgent?” “Yes,” she snapped. “The transfer you promised—it hasn’t gone through.” “I’m aware,” he said, calmly typing on his laptop. “It’s being processed.” “She needs it now, Damien.” “I said I’m aware.” Lena stepped closer. “Do you always play god with people’s lives, or is it just part of the job?” His jaw tensed, but his voice stayed controlled. “You bargained with me. You agreed to the terms.” “This wasn’t about bargaining!” she said, her voice cracking. “This was about saving my family.” “And this was about saving my company’s future,” he said sharply. “Don’t forget why we’re both here.” Lena stared at him—at this man who could command rooms but couldn’t handle a real conversation. “I feel sorry for you,” she whispered. Damien blinked. “Excuse me?” “You have everything. Power, money, influence. But no one trusts you. No one knows you. Not even me—and I sleep across the hall.” She turned to leave—but then paused in the doorway. “You want me to act like we’re in love. Try giving me something real to work with.” --- That night, she locked the door to her room. And for the first time, Damien stood outside it, hand raised to knock… but never did. to be continued...........
