JANET WAS TENSE AND quiet the next morning at the newspaper. Haunted, Mac thought. He got his work done quietly. He wasn’t alone in noticing Janet’s mood. The whole newsroom was quieter than normal. Something was wrong, and the reporters could sense it. The fact that they didn’t know what the trouble was, only made them more anxious.
If Janet noticed that the newsroom was reacting to her distress, she gave no sign of it. Her focus never left the computer in front of her. She read stories, did some editing, writing headlines, and sending them on to the copy desk. She didn’t look up when anyone walked by. No one approached her.
