First Bite

The storm had not stopped since the night the Seal awakened. Rain drummed against Ravenwood’s black windows, whispering in the dark. Students walked the halls in hushed fear, glancing over their shoulders as if the shadows themselves had teeth. Three had gone missing. No one spoke of it. But Aria Crowe knew. She felt it. Each disappearance echoed through her blood like a pulse in the dark. And through that pulse — she could feel him. The Pull It was long after midnight when she found Damian again. He stood in the courtyard, motionless under the rain, his coat soaked through, his pale face turned toward the blood-red moon hanging above the towers. “Damian,” she whispered. He didn’t turn. “You shouldn’t be here.” “You said that last time,” she said softly, stepping closer. “And yet here we are.” The air between them was sharp and electric, filled with something both dangerous and fragile. He looked over his shoulder, eyes glowing faintly crimson. “You feel it too, don’t you?” “Yes.” “It’s the bond,” he murmured. “My blood inside you. It calls when I lose control.” Her voice trembled. “Then why did you give it to me?” “Because you were dying,” he said, finally facing her. His eyes were no longer cold. They burned with regret. “And because I was weak.” A flash of thunder lit the courtyard. In that moment, she saw the hunger in him — not just for blood, but for her. The rain fell harder, as if the sky itself couldn’t bear the tension. “You think you’re weak,” she said quietly. “But you saved me.” He took a step forward. “I ruined you.” Another. “You didn’t.” He stopped inches away, his breath cold against her skin. “Aria… you don’t understand what I am.” “I do,” she said, and lifted her hand to his chest. She could feel no heartbeat there. Only stillness. “But maybe you’ve forgotten what it means to feel.” The First Bite Lightning split the sky. His hand rose — hesitant, trembling — to brush a wet strand of hair from her neck. The scent of rain mixed with the faint sweetness of her skin, and for a moment, all the centuries of restraint cracked. “Don’t,” he whispered. But she tilted her head, exposing the pulse beneath her throat. “I trust you.” That undid him. The world seemed to hold its breath. Then his lips grazed her skin — soft, reverent — before his fangs sank in. The pain was sharp, fleeting, replaced by a flood of heat that rippled through her like fire in her veins. She gasped, gripping his coat as the storm crashed around them. Every heartbeat, every drop of rain, every shiver of air between them fused into one. When he pulled back, his lips were stained dark. His eyes glowed brighter — half hunger, half heartbreak. “You shouldn’t have let me,” he said, voice breaking. “You said we were bound.” “That doesn’t mean you should want it.” She met his gaze, breathless. “Who says I didn’t?” He turned away sharply, fists clenched, as if fighting something inside himself. “You don’t know what you’re doing,” he said. “The more I take, the less human you’ll become.” Her voice trembled, but not with fear. “Maybe I was never human to begin with.” The Council Arrives The next morning, Ravenwood awoke to silence. No birds, no footsteps — just the heavy stillness of waiting. Then the sky darkened. Figures appeared at the gates — cloaked in silver and black, their presence cutting through the fog like blades. The Council of Thorns. Students whispered prayers. Teachers locked their doors. In the Headmistress’s tower, bells began to toll in slow, funeral rhythm. From her window, Aria watched them approach — five in total, pale and beautiful and terrible. At their center walked a woman with eyes of molten gold and a voice that carried even through the glass. “Bring us the boy of the crimson eyes.” Aria’s blood went cold. The Chase Damian was gone before the Council reached the courtyard. She found him packing what little he owned — old books, a silver dagger, a vial of blood sealed with black wax. “You’re running,” she said. “I’m surviving,” he replied. “You can’t leave me here!” He stopped, jaw tightening. “If they find you with me, they’ll kill you.” “Then I’ll run too.” He turned to her, anger flashing through his calm. “This isn’t a game, Aria. The Council doesn’t forgive, and they don’t stop.” “Neither do I.” Her defiance made something break in him — a mix of fury and admiration that twisted like pain. He grabbed her hand. “If you stay, you die. If you come, you’ll wish you had.” “Then I’ll take my chances.” For a moment, they just stared at each other — the vampire prince cursed to the shadows and the girl born of forbidden blood. Then the sound of footsteps echoed down the hall. “They’re here,” he whispered. “Then let’s go.” He hesitated one last time, then took her by the hand. “Hold on.” The world blurred into mist and darkness. When she opened her eyes again, they were no longer in Ravenwood. They stood at the edge of a forest older than time, where the trees whispered in a language no mortal should know. The air smelled of blood and ancient power. And in the distance, something vast stirred — as if the Seal beneath the library had followed them into the wild. The Whisper in Her Blood That night, as they hid beneath the ancient trees, Aria could still feel the echo of his bite — a pulse that wasn’t hers, whispering through her veins. He’s close. He’s watching. He’s afraid. “Damian,” she said softly. “What happens if they catch us?” He didn’t look at her. “They’ll kill me.” “And me?” He turned then, eyes full of quiet sorrow. “They’ll cage you. Because you’re the key to everything they fear.” The fire between them flickered, painting his face in gold and shadow. “You think I’m a danger,” she said. “I know you are,” he answered. “But I’d rather burn beside you than let them take you.” And as the night deepened, the bond between them pulsed again — not just blood, not just magic, but something deeper, doomed, and inescapably human. Above them, the red moon rose once more. And in its light, the Seal whispered its prophecy through her dreams: When love bleeds, the world will end.
