Chapter 1

The forest had one rule. Humans never entered it. Elena Hart didn't know that. All she knew was that the shortcut through the woods would get her home before the storm broke. The first c***k of thunder echoed across the darkening sky as she tightened her grip on her worn backpack and hurried along the narrow trail. Tall trees stretched endlessly around her, their branches weaving together to block out the fading sunlight. The deeper she walked, the quieter the world became. No birds. No insects. Only silence. A chill crawled down her spine. Something felt... wrong. She stopped. "Hello?" she called softly. No answer. Then came the sound. A low growl. It was close. Very close. Elena's heartbeat thundered in her ears, She slowly turned toward the bushes beside the trail. The leaves rustled. A pair of glowing amber eyes appeared in the darkness. Her breath caught. A massive black wolf stepped into view, its fur glistening beneath the flashes of lightning. It stared at her without moving. Another wolf emerged. Then another. Within seconds, she was surrounded. "Oh my God..." She stumbled backward, her foot catching on a root. She fell hard onto the damp ground, unable to tear her eyes away from the wolves closing in around her. The largest wolf growled again. This time, it wasn't a warning. It was a command. Run. Elena scrambled to her feet and sprinted through the forest. Branches whipped against her face as panic took over. She didn't know where she was going—only that she had to escape. Behind her, heavy paws pounded the earth. They were chasing her. Tears blurred her vision. "I'm not going to die here," she whispered. Her lungs burned with every desperate breath as she pushed herself faster, Rain began to pour in heavy sheets, soaking her clothes within seconds. The trail beneath her feet turned slick with mud, making every step more dangerous than the last. She dared a glance over her shoulder. The wolves were gaining on her. Their enormous bodies moved with terrifying speed, weaving effortlessly between the trees. Their glowing eyes never left her, and their snarls echoed through the forest like a death sentence. A sob caught in her throat. Why were they chasing her? She had done nothing. She hadn't even known this place existed until a coworker casually mentioned it as a shortcut into town. No one had warned her that these woods belonged to predators. Lightning split the sky, illuminating the forest in a flash of white. For a heartbeat, Elena thought she saw something else among the trees. Not a wolf. A man. Tall. Still. Watching. Before she could look again, darkness swallowed the figure. "Help!" she cried, her voice breaking. "Please, somebody help me!" Only thunder answered. A branch caught her arm, tearing the sleeve of her jacket. Another whipped across her cheek, leaving behind a sharp sting. She barely noticed. Survival was the only thing that mattered now. Her legs screamed in protest, but fear drove her onward. The pounding of paws behind her grew louder. Closer. So close that she could almost feel the hot breath of the lead wolf against her neck. Then The ground disappeared beneath her feet. Elena's scream pierced the night as she tumbled down a steep embankment. Rocks slammed into her shoulder and ribs. Sharp branches scratched her skin as she rolled helplessly through the darkness. The fall ended with a painful splash beside a rushing river. For several seconds, she couldn't breathe. Every part of her body ached. Rain hammered against the water's surface as she forced herself onto her elbows. A sharp pain shot through her right ankle. She gasped. "No..." She tried to stand. The moment she put weight on her foot, agony ripped through her leg. She collapsed back onto the muddy ground. Panic surged through her chest. She was trapped. The roar of the river drowned out every other sound until... A deep growl rolled across the ravine. Elena slowly lifted her head. At the top of the slope stood the wolves. One by one, they appeared through the mist, their glowing eyes fixed on her motionless form. They had found her. The largest wolf stepped to the edge. Its muscles tensed. It leaped. Another followed. Then another. Within moments, the entire pack was descending toward her. Elena pressed herself against the wet rocks, tears streaming down her face. There was nowhere left to run. No one left to call. She squeezed her eyes shut and whispered a trembling prayer. "Please... don't let this be the end." Suddenly... A deafening roar shook the entire forest. It was so powerful that the earth itself seemed to tremble. Every wolf froze instantly. The air fell silent. Even the river seemed to lose its voice. Elena opened her eyes. From the shadows beyond the trees, another wolf emerged. He was unlike any creature she had ever seen. Larger than the rest. Stronger. His midnight-black fur glistened beneath the rain, and his silver eyes held an authority that made the entire pack lower their heads without hesitation. The rain poured relentlessly, drumming against the earth and turning the riverbank into a sea of mud. Elena's breathing came in ragged gasps as she stared at the enormous black wolf standing before her. Every instinct screamed that she should run, yet her injured ankle made even the thought impossible. The creature was unlike the others. His coat was darker than the storm clouds overhead, almost blending into the night itself. His broad shoulders and powerful frame dwarfed every wolf behind him. Most unsettling of all were his silver eyes. They weren't wild or animalistic. They were... intelligent. Almost human. The wolves surrounding them remained perfectly still, their heads lowered in silent submission. The giant wolf never looked away from Elena. For several heartbeats, neither of them moved. Elena swallowed hard, her voice barely a whisper. "P-Please..." She wasn't sure what she was begging for. Mercy. A miracle. Another chance to live. The wolf tilted his head slightly, as if studying her. His nostrils flared once, then again. Something about her scent caught his attention. His ears twitched. A strange flicker crossed his expression. Confusion. It was gone almost as quickly as it had appeared. Behind him, one of the gray wolves let out a low growl and took a cautious step forward. The black wolf's head snapped toward it. A thunderous snarl ripped through the air. The gray wolf immediately backed away, lowering itself to the ground with a frightened whine. The message was unmistakable. No one touched the human. Elena blinked in disbelief. "Why...?" she whispered. The giant wolf turned back to her. For a fleeting second, she thought she saw sadness hidden in his silver eyes. Then it vanished. Lightning split the sky. The brilliant flash illuminated the clearing, revealing scars that crisscrossed the wolf's powerful body—old wounds, each telling the story of battles fought and survived. He wasn't merely the strongest wolf. He was a leader. A protector. The realization sent another chill through Elena. If the others obeyed him so completely, then this creature wasn't just part of the pack. He ruled it. The Alpha. The word surfaced in her mind from stories she'd laughed at as a child. She had always dismissed them as myths. Now she wasn't so sure. A sudden howl echoed from somewhere deeper in the forest. The Alpha lifted his head, listening. Another howl answered. Then another. His body stiffened. Whatever those calls meant, they weren't good. He looked back at Elena. She tried once more to stand. Pain exploded through her ankle, forcing a cry from her lips. She collapsed before taking a single step. The Alpha watched silently. Then, without warning, he took a step toward her. Elena instinctively crawled backward until her back hit a large rock. There was nowhere else to go. The wolf stopped only inches away. His towering form blocked the rain from falling directly onto her. His warm breath brushed against her face. She squeezed her eyes shut. "I'm not your enemy," she whispered, tears slipping down her cheeks. "I don't even know where I am." Silence. Slowly, she opened one eye. The Alpha hadn't attacked. Instead, he lowered his massive head. His nose hovered just above her shoulder. He seemed to be... smelling her. A strange sensation swept through him. His muscles tensed. His breathing deepened. Something about this frightened human felt impossibly familiar, though he couldn't understand why. It made no sense. She was human. Nothing more. Yet every instinct urged him to protect her. To keep her safe. The feeling was so foreign that it unsettled him. He stepped back abruptly. The other wolves exchanged uneasy glances, sensing their Alpha's unusual behavior. None dared question him. Not aloud. The rain continued to fall as the forest held its breath. Far above the ravine, hidden among the trees, a cloaked figure watched the scene unfold. Only a pair of cold, calculating eyes were visible beneath the hood. "So..." the stranger murmured. "It has begun." A faint smile spread across hidden lips before the figure disappeared into the darkness without making a sound. Below, the Alpha released one final commanding growl. Immediately, the wolves turned away and retreated into the forest. Within moments, only the Alpha remained. He looked at Elena one last time. His silver eyes lingered on her frightened face. Then, with a powerful leap, he disappeared into the shadows. Elena sat frozen beside the river, unable to understand why she was still alive. The storm raged on. But somehow... She knew this night had changed her life forever. No one challenged him. No one dared move. The giant wolf descended the slope with calm, deliberate steps until he stood only a few feet away from Elena. She couldn't look away. Neither could he.
