The Heat Begins

716 Words
A few days had passed since that first encounter. Ananya found herself engaging with Arjun more and more, almost unintentionally, but Arjun always seemed ready for her as if he were specifically waiting for her to walk through the gym doors. Every time he spotted her, a smile would brighten his face that made Ananya feel like she was living in a dream, or perhaps her own "delulu" world. She tried to tell herself she was imagining it the way her pulse leaped when she entered the gym, the way her fingers twitched nervously when she saw him leaning against the counter. He would stand there with his arms crossed, eyes scanning the room until they finally landed on her. But it wasn't her imagination. Her breath hitched the moment he smiled, and her stomach fluttered as he walked toward her with that signature easy confidence. She could feel the bond between them shifting, growing into something deeper. Arjun felt it, too. He wasn't entirely sure what drew him to her so strongly, but the pull was undeniable.Having spent years in the gym, he knew exactly when someone was trying to grab his attention; he was far more observant than he let on. He had seen every trick in the book from girls trying to impress him, but Ananya was different. She was genuine, and the magnetic pull between them was becoming too strong to resist. “Ready?” he asked, his voice low and warm, as if he already knew the answer. She nodded, trying to appear calm, but her heart was racing faster than any warm-up routine could justify. They started "lightly," or so he claimed. But the real challenge wasn’t the weights, it was his presence. When he moved behind her to demonstrate a new movement, his chest was close enough that the heat from his body warmed the back of her neck. His hand brushed her waist to correct her form, and she nearly lost her footing. “You’re too close,” she said, the words slipping out with a breathless laugh. “I’m just making sure you don’t fall,” he replied, his eyes sparkling. “Wouldn’t want my favorite trainee getting hurt.” She raised an eyebrow, asking playfully, “Favorite? Really? And how many times have you said that to other girls?” “Hmm, too many to count,” he said, his face becoming mock-serious. He was trying to tease her, but he didn't realize that Ananya missed the glint in his eyes. She focused only on his words, and a sharp pang of jealousy and hurt tightened her chest. When he saw her expression cloud over, he initially felt a surge of triumph"she did care!" But when he noticed the genuine hurt in her eyes, his playfulness vanished. He stepped closer, his voice deep and sincere. “It’s you. Only you. Don’t argue, okay?” The sheer certainty in his voice sent a shiver through her. As the session continued, his hands guided hers on the dumbbells, his fingers grazing her knuckles. Each touch was brief and professional, yet it left trails of fire along her skin. She felt him watching her form, but it didn’t feel objectifying. It felt… protective. Like he genuinely cared about every move she made. And that was dangerous. Because she was starting to care, too. By the end of the workout, sweat clung to her skin, but so did the thrill of being near him. He stepped into her personal space as she wiped her forehead, his breath brushing her cheek. “You’re improving fast,” he murmured. “Or I’m just trying not to embarrass myself in front of you,” she teased, though her voice was softer than she intended. Arjun leaned in, his lips hovering near her ear. “Careful. I might start to think you actually like me.” Her heart skipped a full beat. She looked up, intending to protest but the look in his eyes stole her breath. There was warmth, hunger, and a quiet promise of something neither of them was ready to admit yet. The heat between them was only just beginning to burn.
