Chapter 14: The Breaking Point

904 Words
The tension in the penthouse had become unbearable. Days had passed since Damian’s quiet confession, yet nothing felt resolved. If anything, everything had only grown more complicated. Ariana stood in the living room, arms wrapped tightly around herself, as if trying to hold together the pieces of her heart that threatened to fall apart. She had tried to think logically. Tried to weigh her options. Tried to convince herself that choosing Lucas—the safe, steady choice—was the right decision. But every time she closed her eyes… She saw Damian. “You’re still thinking about him, aren’t you?” Ariana turned to find Lucas standing near the doorway, his expression calm but searching. “I told you, I need time,” she said quietly. Lucas nodded, stepping closer. “And I’ve given you time. But Ariana… how long are you going to let him hurt you?” Her chest tightened. “I’m not letting him hurt me,” she replied, though her voice lacked certainty. “Aren’t you?” Lucas asked gently. “Because from where I stand… he already has.” The truth in his words stung. Lucas reached for her hand, his touch warm and familiar. “You don’t have to go back to that,” he said softly. “You deserve something better.” Something better. Something easier. Something that didn’t feel like a constant battle. “I know,” she whispered. And yet… Her heart still refused to let go. That night, Ariana returned to the penthouse later than usual. Damian was waiting. Leaning against the window, his expression unreadable—but his presence alone was enough to make her pulse quicken. “You were with him,” he said without turning around. It wasn’t a question. Ariana exhaled slowly. “Yes.” Silence followed. Then Damian turned, his eyes sharp. “Are you going to choose him?” The directness caught her off guard. “I don’t know,” she admitted. His jaw tightened. “You don’t know… or you don’t want to admit it?” “Why does it matter?” she shot back. “This was never real to you in the first place.” “That’s not true anymore,” he said firmly. Ariana laughed bitterly. “You don’t get to change the rules now.” “I’m not changing the rules,” Damian replied, stepping closer. “I’m telling you how I feel.” “And I’m supposed to just believe that?” she challenged. “After everything you’ve done?” His expression darkened. “I told you the truth.” “After you lied,” she fired back. The tension snapped. For a moment, neither of them spoke, the air thick with anger and unspoken pain. “You think this is easy for me?” Damian said suddenly, his voice rising. “You think I planned to feel this way?” “I think you planned everything else,” Ariana replied sharply. “That’s not fair,” he said. “Fair?” she repeated, her voice breaking. “Was it fair when you married me for revenge? When you made me believe this was something more?” “I didn’t expect it to become something more!” he snapped. The words echoed loudly in the room. Ariana froze. There it was. The truth. Raw. Unfiltered. And painful. Her eyes filled with tears, but she refused to let them fall. “Exactly,” she said softly. “You didn’t expect it. But I felt it.” Damian’s anger faded slightly, replaced by something else—regret. “Ariana…” “No,” she interrupted, shaking her head. “I’m tired, Damian.” Her voice trembled, but she didn’t stop. “I’m tired of second-guessing everything. I’m tired of not knowing what’s real and what’s not. And most of all… I’m tired of fighting for something that was never honest from the start.” The words hit harder than any accusation. Damian stood there, silent. For once, he had nothing to say. “I can’t do this anymore,” Ariana whispered. His chest tightened. “What are you saying?” “I’m saying…” she took a shaky breath, “I need to walk away.” The words landed like a final blow. Damian’s expression hardened, but there was something broken beneath it. “So that’s it?” “For now,” she said. “For him?” he asked quietly. Ariana hesitated. Then she looked away. “I don’t know,” she admitted. That answer was enough. Later that night, Ariana packed a small suitcase. Not everything. Just enough. Enough to leave. She paused at the door, glancing back at the place that had become both a home and a battlefield. Then she walked out. Damian didn’t stop her. He stood in the same spot long after the door closed, the silence around him heavier than ever. He had fought for her. Tried to explain. Tried to fix things. But it wasn’t enough. And now… She was gone. Across the city, Ariana sat quietly in the backseat of a car, her hands clenched in her lap as she stared out at the passing lights. Her heart ached. Not just from the past. But from what she had just left behind. Because no matter how hard she tried to deny it— Walking away from Damian… Was the hardest thing she had ever done.
