Chapter 16: The Choice of the Heart

863 Words
The evening sky glowed with shades of gold and crimson, casting a warm light over the city. Ariana stood by the window of Lucas’s guest house, her thoughts restless once again. Ever since Damian came to see her, something inside her had shifted. Not completely. But enough to make her question everything. “You’re thinking about him again.” Lucas’s voice was calm, but there was no mistaking the truth behind it. Ariana turned slowly. “Lucas…” He gave her a small, understanding smile. “You don’t have to explain.” But this time… she wanted to. “I thought leaving would make things clearer,” she admitted softly. “I thought I’d finally feel at peace.” “And you don’t?” Ariana shook her head. “Not the way I expected.” Lucas nodded, his expression thoughtful. “Because your heart didn’t come with you.” The words hit gently—but deeply. Tears stung her eyes, but she didn’t let them fall. “I didn’t want to hurt you.” Lucas let out a quiet breath. “You didn’t. Not really.” He paused, then added, “You just didn’t love me the way I hoped you would.” The honesty in his voice made her chest ache. “I care about you,” she said. “You’ve always been there for me.” “I know,” he replied with a soft smile. “But I don’t want to be the one you choose just because I’m safe.” Ariana looked at him, her heart heavy with gratitude and sadness. “You deserve more than that,” Lucas continued. “And so do you.” Silence filled the room, but it wasn’t uncomfortable. It was… understanding. “Go to him,” Lucas said gently. Ariana’s breath caught. “Lucas—” “It’s okay,” he interrupted. “I’d rather see you happy… even if it’s not with me.” This time, she couldn’t stop the tears. “Thank you,” she whispered. That night, Ariana found herself standing in front of the place she had been avoiding. Damian’s penthouse. Her heart pounded as she stepped inside. But the space felt… different. Softer. Warmer. Lights glowed gently around the room, and something else caught her attention— Photos. Dozens of them. Placed carefully along the walls and tables. Moments she had forgotten. Moments he hadn’t. Childhood memories. Laughter. Smiles. Even recent ones—small, unnoticed moments he had somehow captured. “Ariana.” She turned. Damian stood there, dressed simply, without his usual sharp edges. No walls. No distance. Just him. “What is all this?” she asked softly, her eyes scanning the room again. “It’s everything I should have remembered from the start,” he said. She looked at him, her heart racing. “You were never just part of a plan,” he continued. “You were always… the reason I came back.” Her breath caught. “I was too blinded by the past to see what was right in front of me,” he admitted. “But I see it now.” He stepped closer—but still gave her space. “I don’t expect you to forgive me right away,” he said. “And I don’t expect things to magically go back to how they were.” Ariana swallowed, her emotions rising. “But I love you,” Damian said. The words were simple. But this time… They were real. “I love you without the anger, without the revenge, without the lies,” he continued. “Just you.” Tears slipped down Ariana’s cheeks. “I was scared,” she admitted. “Scared that everything we had wasn’t real.” “It wasn’t real at first,” Damian said honestly. “But it became real. And it’s still real now.” She searched his eyes. No hesitation. No doubt. Just truth. “And if I choose you…” she whispered, “what happens then?” Damian gave a small, hopeful smile. “Then we start over,” he said. “Not as enemies. Not as part of a contract. But as two people who choose each other… every day.” Her heart pounded. All the confusion. All the pain. All the doubt. It led to this moment. A choice. Ariana took a slow step forward. Then another. Until she was standing right in front of him. For a brief second, she hesitated. Then she reached for his hand. “I’m still scared,” she admitted softly. Damian’s grip tightened gently around hers. “So am I.” She let out a small, emotional laugh. “But I don’t want safe anymore,” she said. “I want something real.” His eyes softened. “And you’re sure?” he asked quietly. Ariana nodded. “Yes.” And in that moment— She chose him. As the city lights shimmered outside, Ariana and Damian stood together, no longer bound by a contract… But by something far stronger. A choice. A love that had been broken, tested, and rebuilt. And finally— A future they were both ready to fight for.
