That night, after the children were asleep, Adrian sat alone in the living room. Hailey watched him from the doorway. He looked… thoughtful. Quiet. She walked over. “Hey.” He looked up. Forcing a small smile. “You okay?” she asked. He nodded. “Yeah.” She raised an eyebrow. “Liar.” He exhaled. Leaning back. “I just…” he paused. “What if I mess this up?” She softened. “You won’t.” “You don’t know that,” he said quietly. “I do,” she replied. He looked at her. Really looked. “How?” he asked. She sat beside him. Took his hand. “Because you care,” she said. “Because you try. Because you’ve already changed so much.” He shook his head slightly. “What if that’s not enough?” She smiled gently. “It is.” Then she added— “And even if it isn’t… we’ll figure it out together.” That word. Together. It calmed something in him. Pregnancy the second time around was… Different. Less fear. More awareness. But also… More responsibility. Hailey wasn’t just thinking about herself anymore. Or even just the baby. She was thinking about everything. The kids. The home. Adrian. Their life. And sometimes… It was overwhelming. One afternoon, she sat on the couch, exhausted. “I can’t do this,” she whispered. Adrian walked in just in time to hear it. “Yes, you can,” he said immediately. She shook her head. “I’m tired. I’m emotional. I can’t keep up with everything.” He walked over. Knelt in front of her. “Then don’t,” he said. She blinked. “What?” “You don’t have to do everything,” he continued. “That’s what I’m here for.” She stared at him. “You don’t have to be perfect, Hailey,” he said softly. “You just have to be you.” Her eyes filled with tears. And for the first time in a long time… She allowed herself to rest. TO BE CONTINUED....
