I was ready to bolt out of the bedroom, when Jess came over and sat next to me on the bed. "Don't mind them, they do that a lot" she said looking over at them. "I see" I replied looking at them as well. Blake had left me alone with them. "So, you just move here?" she asked. "Yeah, yesterday just around the curve actually" I answered. "Nice, I'm actually not far from you either going the other way" she said. She was soft spoken but seemed like she had a lot of energy. In the few minutes we have been talking, I liked her. "I thought of something fun we can do" Austin said looking at us. "What's that babe?" Jess asked. "Let's go down to the beach, I'm sure Sam hasn't been down there yet, unless Zack took her" he said. Zack got red in the face, not making eye contact. "No, I haven't been there yet" I replied. I couldn't help looking at Zack, who clearly was trying to avoid looking at me. "Aright then, let's go" Austin said jumping off the couch and grabbing Jess by the hand. They were cute together, seemed like the power couple. Jess giggled as she got off the bed and followed Austin out of the room. "You don't have to go if you don't want to" Zack said standing up. "No, it's fine, unless you don't want me to, then I can go home" I said looking up at him. He made eye contact "No, it's cool." he said giving me a small smile. I stood up and he followed me downstairs where Jess and Austin were standing in the kitchen talking to Blake. "Heading to the beach?" Blake asked. "Yeah" Zack answered. "I may pop down later on" Blake said grabbing a water bottle out of the fridge. "Okay" Zack said as we made our way out of the house. It was still light out, there was a field behind the house, and a trail leading down to the beach. It was maybe a five minute walk. Jess sat down on the sand, she patted the sand next to her looking at me, so I sat down. The boys walked down the beach. "Zack is really nice once you get to know him" she said out of the blue. I looked in the direction the boys headed "Yeah, Blake told me the same" I replied. "I think it would be awesome if you both got close, we could do group things" she said smiling at me. I looked at her smiling "I'd be happy if he actually tried talking to me" I said. "He'll come around, he doesn't have much experience with girls in general, like at all" she said, and we both started laughing. "I take it your not seeing anyone?" she asked. "No, been single a few months now" I replied looking out towards the ocean. "I see, messy breakup I take it?" she asked. "Yeah, you could say that" I answered. I seen the boys coming back with wood in each of there arms. Once the boys got the fire going Austin sat next to Jess and surprisingly Zack sat next to me. I was in complete shock. Austin started telling stories when him and Zack were younger Jess and I were dying laughing, Zack was pretty quiet, "Nothing to be embarrassed about" I said giving him a nudge in the arm "Oh yeah, do you have a*********s to share?" he asked looking at me. "No, not really but yours are pretty good" I said. He gave me a friendly push. Was he actually warming up to me already.
An hour and a half had already went by, Zack and I were actually talking about stuff while Jess and Austin were busy making out. It didn't bother me as it was nice to get to know Zack a bit more. I learned their father had left three years ago as he was seeing someone else, he still comes around but not as much as Zack and Blake would like. Blake just graduated high school and was leaving in the fall to take a business course in the city. Zack was interested in carpentry which I found pretty cool. I told him I was still undecided. I could see an image walking towards us "Hey guys" Blake yelled at us. Jess and Austin stopped making out. He sat down next to Zack " Holy s**t, am I seeing you sitting next to a girl" Blake said jokingly giving Zack a nudge. "Shut up" Zack answered nudging him back. "Sammy, play nice with him, he never had a girlfriend, or friends who are girls period" Blake said putting his arm around Zack. "Don't worry, Zack and I are going to get along great" I said giving Zack a smile, who returned the smile.
We stayed on the beach til after eleven, we walked back up the house Jess and Austin got in Austins white honda civic so he could drive her home. I was going to walk home since it was pretty close " Oh hell no, you're not walking" Blake said. "I'll drive her" Zack replied running into the house to get the keys for the jeep. He came back out "I'll be back in a few" Zack said walking passed Blake who nodded at me. I shook my head smiling as I got into the jeep. We pull into my driveway I unbuckled my seat belt "Thank you for turning my night around" I said glancing at Zack "Um, you're welcome" he replied looking confused. "Look, to be honest I figured you didn't want me there" I said looking out the window. "It's not that, I just get weird around new people" he replied, I could still feel his eyes on me. "Well, I'm glad it changed" I said turning around to look at him. "Hey, before you go, can I have your number?" he asked. "Yeah sure." I said. We swapped numbers and I got out of the jeep. He waited in the driveway til I got to my door. I couldn't help but smile the rest of the night.
