CHAPTER SIX

Jessica’s POV

I woke up in the morning feeling tired and still sleepy. Then, the conversation that happened between Clara and Justice struck my memory. I remembered the kiss from a week ago, and I instinctively touched my lips and smiled.

Did Justice really like me?

I loved the way his lips felt on mine. I could feel the chemistry between us, but I was afraid of falling too deep.

I shook my head, trying to dismiss the thought, and went to get ready for school.

At School

The lessons had already begun when Mrs. Banky, our biology teacher, strolled into the classroom and announced that we would be having a test in ten minutes.

“You’ll be having a test in the next ten minutes. Get prepared,” Mrs. Banky said as she sat on a chair.

Fifteen minutes later, she stood up.

“Everybody, drop your handsets in the basket at the door before you begin,” Mrs. Banky ordered.

Meanwhile, before Mrs. Banky gave the order, Clara had been chatting with Larry and left her phone on her desk before sitting down for the test.

Twenty-five minutes later, I raised my hand.

“Ma, I’m done with mine. Can I submit?” I asked.

“Wow, the first person! The basket is at the door. Go pick your phone,” Mrs. Banky said while collecting my test script.

Clara’s phone pouch and mine were almost the same, so I mistakenly picked Clara’s phone instead of mine. As I opened it, I saw her chat with Larry.

My blood ran cold.

I couldn’t believe my eyes.

I quickly calmed myself down, went back, picked up my phone, and snapped pictures of the chats. Then, I dropped Clara’s phone back into the basket as if I had never touched it.

I left the classroom and sat on the school compound.

Break Time

I kept thinking of a strategy to find out what Larry and Clara were planning when an idea struck me.

I need to tell Justice. Two heads are better than one.

I checked the time. There were only ten minutes left before the football game, so I hurried off to look for him.

When I reached the football field, I asked around before finally finding him.

Behold, he was standing in front of his locker, bringing out his game materials. When he noticed me, he raised a c****d brow.

“Hi, Jessica,” Justice said.

“Hello. We need to talk. It’s urgent,” I said, looking around to make sure there were no other listeners.

“Oops, eight minutes to my next game. So, what do we need to talk about?” Justice asked as he relaxed against his locker.

“I saw something on—”

I was cut short by Clara’s voice.

“Hey, Justice!” Clara said, skipping happily toward us.

“Hello. What are you looking for?” Justice asked.

“I just came to wish you good luck,” Clara said, smiling seductively.

“As you can see, you just interrupted an important conversation between Jess and me,” Justice hissed.

That was when Clara finally noticed me, and her expression changed into a snarl.

“What’s so important that you two are talking about that you can’t say it when I’m here? We’re not enemies, are we?” Clara asked.

“Please, we’ll talk later. Only two minutes to my game,” Justice said before heading toward the field.

“Hey, you! Stay away from him!” Clara said, pointing a finger at me.

I stared at her.

“I don’t understand you. Are you cooking up something vicious?” I asked innocently with a shrug.

I walked away with my chin held high, leaving her standing there in her own thoughts.

Later That Day

School ended, and I went home. I took a bath, ate lunch, and lay on my bed, thinking about what to do.

Suddenly, I heard a ding coming from the main door.

Who could that be? I wondered as I got up to open the door.

When I opened it, I was shocked to see Liam, Leo, Olivia, and Justice standing outside.

“What the f**k are y’all doing in my house without informing me?” I asked as I let them in.

“We all came to keep you company,” Olivia said as she sat on one of the chairs.

“Wow, Jess! I love your house. I’m sleeping over today,” Leo said with a loud yawn.

Everyone burst into hilarious laughter.

“Are you being serious right now?” I asked Leo, still laughing.

“Gosh, your chair is too soft. I’m taking it with me when I’m going back to my house,” Liam said as he landed heavily on the couch.

“You guys are just claiming all my house properties,” I complained.

“Oh no, we’re not. We’re your friends, right? Friends share, you know,” Justice teased with a wink.

“You!!!” I exclaimed.

I chased him around the parlour and into the backyard while everyone followed us.

Eventually, we sat down in our small garden.

“Why don’t we host a small party for just us?” Olivia suggested excitedly.

“Okay, then. Party it is! But y’all will help clean up. Deal?” I asked.

“Deal,” Olivia said.

“Deal,” Liam and Leo chorused.

“Deal,” Justice added.

“Okay then. Justice, please come and help me pack all the items we need,” I said.

“Ladies first,” Justice replied in a gentlemanly manner.

At the Kitchen

“So, what was that you wanted to tell me before Clara interrupted you?” Justice asked as he brought out the glasses.

“It’s about Clara. She’s cooking up something devilish,” I said while bringing out the drinks.

“Hmm… she’s harmless, though. You know this,” Justice said with a shrug.

“It’s not only her.”

Justice stopped mid-motion.

“What are you insinuating?” he asked with a c****d brow.

“She and Larry are planning something devilish against us,” I said, leaning against the kitchen counter.

“Like… against you and me?” Justice asked, bewildered.

“Yeah,” I replied.

“What do you think it is?” Justice asked.

“I don’t know, but I saw their chats. Larry likes me, and Clara is all over the moon for you. So, they agreed to team up and create a fight between us,” I explained.

“Where are they meeting? We need to track them, listen to their vicious plans, and come up with a plan of our own,” Justice said with a strained growl, clearly trying to hold back his anger.

“They’re meeting at Silver’s Restaurant at 4 p.m. tomorrow. It was supposed to be today, but Larry had something urgent to attend to, so they cancelled the meeting,” I explained further.

“This is going to be fun,” Justice said with a smirk.

“I can already see it,” I replied.

We both laughed before returning to the party.
