CHAPTER 9 When she awoke, Claire didn’t know what had roused her. It took her a moment to gather her bearings. She often didn’t know where she was when waking up these days. She had dreamt of another place, but she couldn’t figure out what it was. There had been a knocking sound in her dream, like a woodpecker in the woods. Knocking. That was it. She had heard knocking, and that had woken her up. She sat up in bed with a sudden urgency. She looked around, but the room looked as it always did. She had closed the curtains when it had got dark outside, but she had not intended to sleep, so she had slept fully clothed. She was starving.
