CHAPTER 2 Claire spent the day tucked up in bed with her book. Towards the evening, she grew hungry again, but she didn’t like the idea of heading back downstairs in the dusk. She had working electric lights in her room, but she had not paid attention to the lighting outside her room and did not want to go out looking for switches. She certainly didn’t want to be caught in the dark of the house. It was too quiet. Her eyes were getting tired of reading, and she desperately missed a television. Even a radio would have done the job. She just wanted to hear something. She considered singing, but she couldn’t think of any songs. She knew that music existed.
