Chapter 4: Max Ava's heart was still racing as she stepped out of the taxi and approached her apartment building. She hadn't noticed anything out of the ordinary, but her instincts were screaming at her to be cautious. As she reached the entrance, she heard a faint rustling sound coming from the shadows. Suddenly, Ryder's men emerged from the darkness, their eyes fixed menacingly on her. Ava's heart skipped a beat as she realized she was trapped. "He wants you back, Emily. And he's willing to do whatever it takes to make that happen." One of the men uttered. Ava/Emily's heart sank, her mind racing with memories of Ryder's cruelty. She knew she couldn't go back to him, not after everything she had been through. "I'll never go back to him," she spat, her voice firm. The men shrugged. "Then you'll have to deal with us." He reached out and grabbed her, pulling her into a dark alleyway. The others followed suit. Ava/Emily struggled and kicked, but they were too strong. She was trapped, at the mercy of Ryder's henchmen. But before she could even react, a figure burst out of nowhere, tackling the men to the ground. It was Max, his eyes blazing with determination as he fought off Ryder's goons. Ava watched in awe as Max single-handedly took down the attackers, his martial arts skills on full display. "Get out of here, Emily!" Max yelled, his fists flying as he fought off the strangers. Ava/Emily didn't need to be told twice. She turned and ran, her heart pounding in her chest. She didn't stop until she was back in her apartment, the door locked and bolted behind her. Max burst in moments later, his chest heaving with exhaustion. "Are you okay?" he demanded, his eyes scanning her face. Ava/Emily nodded, her eyes welling up with tears. "Thanks to you, I am." Max's expression softened. "I'll always be here to protect you, Emily. You're not alone." And with that, he pulled her into a warm embrace, holding her close as she finally allowed herself to cry. When the tension reduced, Max asked her to come with him. "You are not safe here anymore, you have to come with me." She followed Max as he led her away from the apartment, away from Ryder's men, and into the safety of the night. Max led Ava to a small, unassuming building on the outskirts of town. It looked like a typical suburban home, but Ava knew that appearances could be deceiving. As they entered the house, Ava saw that it was fortified with state-of-the-art security systems and cameras. "Hi, Ava" Sarah gestured her hand for a handshake. "Max, what is your sister doing here, isn't it too dangerous for her?" Ava asked in a slight whisper. "She'll be leaving soon, I only asked her to arrange this new place" Ava nodded and went ahead to accept the hand from Sarah. "Hi Sarah". Max had brought her to a safehouse, a place where Ryder's men couldn't find her. "Welcome to your humble abode," Max said, gesturing to the cozy living room. "You'll be safe here." Sarah made for the door. "I'll be on my way Max" she said and headed out without waiting for a reply. Ava, feeling a wave of relief wash over her. She knew that she could trust Max, and that he would do everything in his power to protect her. As they settled in, Ava realized that she had finally found a place where she could breathe a sigh of relief. She was safe, at least for the moment. And with Max by her side, she knew that she could face whatever came next. She hugged him tightly. But as they stood there, holding each other, Ava/Emily knew that she couldn't stay hidden forever. Ryder would never stop looking for her, and she needed a plan to take him down for good. As she looked into Max's eyes, Ava saw something there that gave her pause. Something that made her wonder if she was truly safe, or if she was just trading one danger for another. Ava/Emily pulled back from Max's embrace, her eyes determined. "I can't keep hiding, Max. I need to take down Ryder once and for all." Max's expression turned serious. "I agree. But we need a plan, and we need it to be foolproof." Ava/Emily nodded, her mind racing. "I have an idea. Let's gather evidence of Ryder's illegal activities and take it to the authorities." Ava knew she had to tread carefully. Max was getting suspicious, but she still needed his help. She needed foolproof evidence to take down Bruno Medicals and Ryder Blackwood's empire, and she knew exactly where to find it. Ava, trying to sound casual added "I need you to hack into Bruno Medicals' server we might find some sensitive data." Max raised an eyebrow. "What kind of data?" Ava hesitated, knowing she had to reveal just enough to convince Max to help her. "Evidence of their illegal experiments and human trials. I have reason to believe they're hiding something big, and I need your expertise to uncover it." Max looked at her skeptically, but Ava could see the wheels turning in his head. He was intrigued, and she knew he couldn't resist the challenge. "Okay, I'm in," Max said finally. "But if I get caught, I'm blaming you." Ava smiled, relief washing over her. "I'll take full responsibility. Let's get to work." Together, they hatched a plan to infiltrate Bruno Medicals' server and gather the evidence they needed. It was a risky move, but Ava knew it was the only way to bring Ryder Blackwood and his empire to justice. Max's fingers flew across the keyboard as he worked his magic to breach Bruno Medicals' server. Ava watched in awe, her heart racing with anticipation. "This is it," Max said, his eyes fixed on the screen. "We're in." Ava leaned in, her eyes scanning the files and documents flashing on the screen. And then, she saw it - a folder labeled "Project Echelon" "What's that?" Ava asked, her voice barely above a whisper. Max's eyes narrowed. "Looks like a top-secret project. Let me see if I can access it." Ava's heart was skipping as Max worked to crack the password. Finally, the folder opened, revealing a trove of incriminating documents and videos. Ava's eyes widened as she scanned the files. This was it - the evidence she needed to take down Ryder Blackwood and Bruno Medicals once and for all. But as they delved deeper into the files, Ava realized that Project Echelon was more sinister than she had ever imagined. And she knew that she and Max had to get out - fast - before they were discovered. But Max's sudden movement cut her off. He had finished hacking into the system, and a sinister grin spread across his face. "Time to wrap this up, Ava," he said, his eyes gleaming with malice. Ava thought they had finally gotten the upper hand, but Ryder was always one step ahead. As they prepared to take their evidence to the authorities, they received a chilling message from Ryder himself. "You think you're smart, Ava?" Ryder's voice dripped with menace. "But you're just walking into my trap. Meet me at the old warehouse on 5th and Main if you want to see Sarah alive again." How did he know about Max? Ava had thoughts all over her head. Ava's heart sank. Ryder had Sarah, and he was using her as bait. Max's eyes met hers, and she knew they had no choice but to play along. As they arrived at the warehouse, Ava's instincts screamed at her to run. But she steeled herself and walked inside, Max by her side. Ryder was waiting, a smug smile spreading across his face. "Welcome, Ava," Ryder said, his eyes glinting with triumph. "You'll never leave this place alive if you try to escape." Max was forced to kneel before Ryder while Ava watched. The doors slammed shut behind them, trapping them in Ryder's deadly snare. Ava's heart raced as Ryder's men closed in on them. Max stood firm, his eyes locked on Ryder. "You're not taking us down without a fight," he growled. Ryder sneered. "You're no match for me, Max. I have the upper hand. Look over there, I have your sister" Ryder pointed to where Sarah had been tied up to a chair. Max and Ava exchanged a reassuring glance. "We've got this, Ava," Max said, his voice low and steady. Ryder gestured and Max went and released Sarah. Ava's mind raced, have she been played all along? Ava's eyes widened in shock as Sarah and Max revealed their true allegiance. "You're...you're working for Ryder?" she stammered. Sarah's expression was cold, calculating. "Yes, Ava. Max have been playing you from the start. Ryder needed someone on the inside, and we were happy to oblige." Max's smile was sinister. "You were the perfect pawn, Ava. So gullible, so trusting." Ava felt a stinging sensation, as if she'd been slapped. She couldn't believe her friend had betrayed her so callously. Ryder chuckled, clearly enjoying the show. "Well played, Max. Well played." Ava's mind raced, trying to process the betrayal. She had trusted Max with her life, and they had repaid that trust with deceit. The three of them closed in on Ava, their eyes gleaming with malice. Ava knew she was in grave danger, with no one to turn to.
