Free Falling

"Who are you?!" I yelled as I was thrown into a dark room. I couldn't see a thing. "Do you want to get caught?" A voice whispered. It was familiar...the servant that had met us at the gates. "You," I stated. "Me," his voice said somewhere to my left, "now be quiet." I strained to hear anything and I shrunk against a wall as I heard loud and heavy footsteps. "He has the guard under control," he told me after they had passed. "Felix," I muttered, I could still feel the hot tears falling down my face. Just like that...he was gone. Felix was gone. "I'm sorry," the man's voice said, "there was nothing you could have done." "You could have let me go," I told him, "you could have let me go. I could have saved him." "From a monster that wants you dead?" "They said they wanted me alive," I said, holding in a sob, "I could have bartered with them." "You really think they would have spared him?" He asked softly. He was right. I knew this was true but I'd rather be dead than have Felix gone. Oh no, Annabella. "What are we going to do? They have the guards." "I thought you'd have a master escape plan," he said. "Nope," I said before I thought of something, "how'd they know we were here? DeNeigh kept it quiet." "There was a dragon spotted on the outer parts of the city. I suppose he just assumed," the man said. Dragon...Jordan, stupid boy. "Do you know this castle?" I asked him. "Like the back of my hand," he said. "You know the guard that had Felix's sword?" "Yes," the man said reluctantly. "Lead me to him," I said. "Then what?" "We find a window," I said. The man led me out of the room and into a dimly lit hallway. He started going left and I followed closely behind him. "He's the lead guard. He's most likely in the king's quarters with the warlock. There's a secret way through the wash room." "Show me the way," I told him. He looked back at me skeptically. "Are you planning on killing yourself?" He asked. "No," I told him with my jaw set, "I have a mission to finish." "Of course you do," the man muttered as he led me through a maze of hallways until we came to a library. There wasn't a soul in there and we slid through it quietly. "Secret door?" I asked and he nodded as he pushed aside a desk. "A little short but it works," he said as he led the way in a half crouch. I nodded as I followed after him. The five pointed star...I've seen it somewhere. I knew what it meant a long time ago. I just had to remember... "Here we are," he said as he helped me into the bathtub. He then closed the door he had just come through. A mirror. I looked at my red cheeks and puffy eyes for only a moment. "You would really betray me like this?" The warlock's voice flowed from the open door way. We crept toward it. "Betray you?" I looked through the opening. DeNeigh was sitting on the bed in only his undergarments. We were to the backs of the three guards and the warlock. I saw the sword still in the guards hand. There was a window to the left and a smile pulled itself across my lips. The window was right beside the guard. I just had to tackle him out the window. "The Dragon Riders?" The guard spoke up, "they are a pathetic bunch. You should have chosen the right side." "You should have remained loyal to the true king," DeNeigh shot back. "Enough," the warlock spoke with authority. "Run to the window," I told the man. I needed to find out his name. "What?" He shot back. "Now!" I yelled as I charged out. I tackled the nearest guard and tore his sword out of the sheath. I swiped at another's legs and sent him sprawled on the floor. The warlock looked at me with an amused expression. I smiled as the other guard, the one with Felix's sword, stepped forward. "Ready to jump?" I yelled as I dropped the sword and charged the guard. He was unprepared for my small spirit of strength as I sent him stumbled backwards. The man, who had in fact ran for the window, was standing there with a look of pure terror on his face. He clenched his teeth as he wrapped his arms around the guards torso. "Grab the sword!" I yelled as I sent them both tumbling out the window with a kick to the guard's chest. "Alaina Jordan," the warlock laughed behind me, "so good to see you again." "Can't say the same about you," I told him. My eyes were on DeNeigh. He was looking at me with terror in his eyes. I had no way to kill the warlock. We've read that only a special weapon could destroy such an evil. It was a weapon I did not have in my possession. "Pick a side, DeNeigh," I told him. He looked at me like I was crazy. "Wh-what?" He stuttered. "Alaina-" the warlock stepped forward. I glared at the necklace for a moment. Where have I seen it? "Choose in the next five seconds!" "Join me," the warlock stepped forward, "is it really worth it? To lose all you care about?" "For every person you kill," I told him, "I will only grow more passionate." "Well then," the warlock said as he raised his hands. A black smoke appeared in his fingers. "Too late!" I told DeNeigh as I jumped out of the window just as the gust of black magic sailed over my head. My last glimpse was DeNeigh tackling the warlock. Then I was free falling.
