Shadows Over Frostpeak

915 Words
A bitter wind swept across the Hollow Trail as the first rays of dawn pierced the thick canopy of the Whispering Forest. The night’s events still weighed heavily on the four travelers. None of them had spoken much since leaving the clearing where Finn had entrusted Liora with the second Echo Pendant. The silence was different now. It no longer felt empty. It felt as though the forest itself was listening. Liora walked at the front beside Captain Elara, her fingers resting on the Pendant of Echoes hidden beneath her cloak. Every few moments, it pulsed with a gentle warmth, as if guiding her toward an unseen destination. Behind them, Kael carefully scanned the forest while Finn struggled to keep pace. “You should rest,” Kael said quietly. Finn shook his head. “If I stop now, they’ll catch us.” Kael studied the young boy’s determined face. “You’re braver than most grown men I’ve known.” Finn smiled faintly but said nothing. After several hours of walking, the trees began to thin. For the first time in days, the companions caught sight of the northern horizon. There, rising above the clouds, stood Frostpeak Mountain. Its snow-covered summit glittered beneath the morning sun like polished crystal. Liora stopped walking. “So that’s Frostpeak…” Captain Elara nodded. “According to the ancient records, the Crystal Caverns lie deep beneath those mountains.” “The First Echo Crystal has remained hidden there for five centuries.” Liora could hardly take her eyes off the towering mountain. Somewhere beneath its frozen slopes lay the first key to breaking the curse. But reaching it would not be easy. As the group continued, they arrived at the ruins of an old watchtower built into the side of a rocky hill. Its walls had partially collapsed, and ivy climbed over the weathered stones. Elara raised her hand. “We’ll stop here.” Kael frowned. “This place has been abandoned for years.” “Exactly,” Elara replied. “No one will expect us to rest here.” The companions entered cautiously. Inside, they discovered faded banners bearing the crest of Elaris—a silver phoenix rising from blue flames. Liora gently brushed away centuries of dust from the emblem. “It must have been beautiful once.” “It was,” Elara said. “Before the silence.” While Kael searched the upper level for supplies, Finn wandered toward an old wooden chest hidden beneath fallen beams. “It’s locked,” he called. Liora stepped forward. Almost without thinking, she removed the iron key that had belonged to her grandmother. The key slid effortlessly into the ancient lock. With a loud click, the chest opened. Inside lay a beautifully crafted sword wrapped in faded blue cloth. Its silver blade shimmered despite the centuries, and the hilt bore the same four-star symbol as the Echo Keepers. There was also a letter. Its parchment had yellowed with age. Liora carefully unfolded it. Written in elegant handwriting were the words: “To the one who carries the Pendant of Echoes—if this sword has found you, then hope still lives.” Captain Elara’s eyes widened. “The Sword of Asterion…” “I thought it had been lost forever.” Liora looked at the weapon. “It belongs to me?” Elara smiled. “It belonged to the first Commander of the Echo Keepers.” “Only the true Heir of Echoes can awaken it.” As Liora wrapped her hand around the hilt, the blade began to glow with soft blue light. Ancient runes appeared along its length. The room filled with warmth. Then, suddenly— The glow vanished. Outside, thunder rolled across the mountains. Kael rushed down from the tower. “We’ve got company.” Everyone hurried outside. At the edge of the forest stood dozens of riders dressed in black armor. Their crimson banners fluttered in the wind. Behind them marched soldiers carrying long spears and dark shields. At their center rode a towering figure upon a black horse. His armor was unlike the others—covered in silver markings that resembled broken chains. He removed his helmet. A scar stretched across one side of his face. His eyes burned with unnatural crimson light. Captain Elara whispered one name. “General Malachar.” Kael’s face turned grim. “The Shadow King’s greatest commander.” Malachar smiled as his voice echoed across the valley. “Liora Ashbourne.” “You have something that belongs to my master.” He drew his enormous black sword. “I suggest you surrender.” Liora slowly stepped forward. The Sword of Asterion rested firmly in her hands. Its blade shone brighter than ever before. “I don’t even know who I am yet,” she called back. “But I know this.” “I will never surrender.” For a moment, neither side moved. Then Malachar raised his sword. “Take them.” Hundreds of soldiers charged down the hillside. Captain Elara drew her bow. Kael unsheathed both swords. Finn gripped a fallen spear with trembling hands. Liora lifted the Sword of Asterion. The runes along its blade blazed like stars. As the armies collided beneath the shadow of Frostpeak Mountain, Liora realized that this was no longer a journey of discovery. It was the beginning of a war. And somewhere deep beneath the frozen mountain, the First Echo Crystal waited… as though it had been expecting her all along.
