Chapter Four
The Bridge of Echoes
The ancient bridge trembled beneath Liora’s feet.
Blue light surged from the Pendant of Echoes, spreading across the weathered stones like streams of liquid fire. Strange symbols, hidden for centuries beneath layers of moss and dust, awakened one after another until the entire bridge glowed beneath the evening sky.
The three masked warriors stopped.
For the first time, fear showed in their eyes.
“The prophecy…” one whispered.
Kael tightened his grip on his sword.
“Liora! Stay behind me!”
But it was too late.
The bridge had already chosen.
A pillar of blue light shot into the sky, illuminating the forest for miles. Birds burst from the treetops, and the river below roared as though it had awakened from a centuries-long sleep.
The lead warrior recovered first.
“Do not let her escape!”
The three attackers charged.
Kael met the first warrior head-on. Steel clashed against steel, sending sparks into the air. The masked soldier was quick, but Kael matched every strike with calm precision.
Meanwhile, the second warrior rushed toward Liora.
She stumbled backward, her heart racing. She had never held a sword in battle.
The warrior swung his blade.
Before it could reach her, the pendant flashed again.
An invisible force hurled the attacker backward. He crashed into the bridge’s stone railing, dropping his weapon into the river below.
Liora stared at her trembling hands.
“I… I didn’t do that.”
The third warrior raised both hands.
Dark mist poured from his sleeves, twisting into shadowy snakes that slithered across the bridge toward her.
The air turned icy.
Liora could barely breathe.
The shadows wrapped around her ankles, pulling her toward the edge.
She struggled, but the darkness only tightened its grip.
Kael fought desperately to reach her, but another warrior blocked his path.
“Liora!” he shouted.
Then a deep voice echoed through the forest.
“Enough.”
A brilliant silver arrow streaked through the air, striking the shadows. They dissolved instantly into wisps of smoke.
A hooded figure stepped from the trees.
She wore silver armor beneath a dark cloak, and a beautifully carved bow rested in her hands.
Her white hair flowed behind her like moonlight.
The masked warriors immediately stepped back.
“The Silver Huntress,” one hissed.
“We’ve been discovered.”
Without another word, the attackers threw small black stones onto the bridge.
Thick smoke exploded around them.
When the smoke cleared, they were gone.
Silence returned.
The mysterious woman approached Liora slowly.
Her silver eyes rested on the glowing pendant.
“So…” she said quietly.
“The Heart has awakened.”
Kael lowered his sword.
“You know what the pendant is?”
The woman nodded.
“I know far more than that.”
She removed her hood.
“My name is Captain Elara Voss.”
“I was once a guardian of the Order of the Echo Keepers.”
Liora looked surprised.
“I thought the Order disappeared.”
“Most of us did.”
Elara’s expression grew solemn.
“The Shadow King hunted us until only a handful survived.”
She reached into a leather pouch and removed a small crystal no larger than a coin.
It shimmered with pale blue light.
“The Four Echo Crystals once protected this kingdom.”
She pointed toward Liora’s map.
“The first crystal lies inside the Crystal Caverns beneath Frostpeak Mountain.”
“The second sleeps in the Temple of Winds.”
“The third was hidden beneath the Lake of Echoes.”
She paused.
“The fourth…”
“…has been lost for centuries.”
Liora unfolded the ancient map.
As the crystal came close, a new path appeared—one that had been invisible before.
The glowing line stretched northward through the forest, across distant mountains, ending at a symbol shaped like a snowflake.
“The Crystal Caverns,” Elara whispered.
Kael smiled.
“Our journey finally has a destination.”
As darkness settled over the forest, the three travelers made camp beneath towering pine trees.
For the first time in many years, Liora felt she was no longer alone.
She had found allies.
But somewhere beyond the mountains…
Inside the ruins of Castle Noctis…
A tall figure sat upon a throne carved from black stone.
The Shadow King slowly opened his glowing crimson eyes.
A servant knelt before him.
“My lord…”
“The girl has awakened the Pendant of Echoes.”
The Shadow King smiled—a cold, terrifying smile.
“Excellent.”
“Let her find the first crystal.”
His fingers tightened around the arm of his throne.
“Every step she takes…”
“…brings her closer to me.”
Far away, Liora gazed up at the stars, unaware that the greatest battle of her life had already begun.
The silence was breaking.
And with it…
Ancient darkness was rising once more.
