Chapter 14:secrets in ink

348 Words
Back at the inn, Aria spread Eleanor’s scorched journal on the table, her fingers tracing the fragile pages. Adrian sat across from her, silent, waiting. The journal entries were fragmented, written in hurried, fearful handwriting. But one thing became clear: Eleanor had been trying to escape not only the Whitmores, but something much more dangerous. They won’t let me leave. Charles is watching me. He knows about Aria. I have to protect her. Adrian leaned over her shoulder. “She was trying to run.” Aria nodded, her throat tight. “And she couldn’t.” As she flipped another page, something fell out — a folded piece of paper, untouched by fire. It was a map. Marked with a red X just outside Hollow Creek, near the cliffs. “What is this?” Adrian asked. Aria stared at it. “A place she wanted me to find.” They didn’t hesitate. Less than an hour later, they were driving toward the cliffs, the afternoon sun struggling through the clouds. The path was narrow and winding, leading to a clearing overlooking the sea. At the edge stood a rusted bench and an old stone marker. Adrian pointed. “There.” Beneath the marker, half-buried in the soil, was a small tin box. Aria’s hands trembled as she opened it. Inside were more letters — ones Eleanor had written but never sent. They spoke of fear, love, and betrayal. And one name appeared again and again: Mason. Adrian read over her shoulder. “She trusted him once.” Aria nodded, her heart breaking. “And he destroyed her.” The final letter was addressed to her: My dearest Aria, If you find this, know that I loved you more than anything. They will try to make you forget who you are. Don’t let them. You are stronger than their lies. Tears blurred Aria’s vision as she folded the letter back into the box. Adrian’s voice was soft. “What now?” Aria stood, staring out at the crashing waves below. “Now we go to Mason. No more running.”
