The day after the gala, my mom started her first chemo session, and I needed to be there.
So there I was, sitting across from her at the table while the drug slowly made its way into her veins.
"UNO!" I shouted, slapping my card down on the table. We were on our third round and she’d won the first two.
"You’re cheating. You had six cards a minute ago!" she pouted, tossing a red card onto the pile.
"Yeah, like five rounds ago, Mom. Don’t be a sore loser." I dropped a red card on top of hers. "I win! Yay! Finally!"
"So… tell me about your new job," she said as I scooped up the cards.
I pursed my lips, eyes locked on the deck. I pretended to be deeply focused on shuffling, buying time.
