Chapter 2

I set my coffee down on the table in front of her. She looked up at me, totally confused. "Sorry, but who are you?" "You must be Liam's mom, right? I'm Lily Miller, Chloe's mother. Chloe and Liam are classmates." "Oh, I see. What do you want from me?" Her voice was cold and distant. She clearly had zero interest in chatting with me. I pulled out my phone, found a photo of my husband Ethan, and laid my cards on the table. "This is my husband, Ethan Brown. I saw Liam's family photo at the kindergarten earlier. Liam's father looks a lot like my husband." She glanced at the photo on my phone with a sneer. "What is this? People use pickup lines this weird now? And sure, your husband isn't bad looking, but he's got terrible taste." Sophia pulled out her phone and hit call. "Hey babe, I'm at the café downstairs from your office. Come down for a minute. I want to show you something." She looked at me with pure attitude. "My husband is a senior executive at the Johnson Group. He's not someone just any random person can mess with." "The Johnson Group? What a coincidence. My husband works here too." Less than ten minutes later, her husband walked over from the lobby direction. Sophia stood up and called out to him in this sickly sweet voice. "Babe, I'm right here!" From a distance, that man and I made eye contact for just a second. I saw his footsteps hesitate, clear as day, but he smoothed it out right away. It was like that split second of hesitation had been all in my head. "Babe!" Sophia stretched like a cat and wrapped her arms around his neck, hanging off him. "Babe, this lady, is the mom of Liam's classmate. What was her name again, Lily? She kept saying her husband looks just like you. My husband is so handsome that everyone wants a piece of him, huh!" Then she smothered his cheek with loud, over the top kisses. He fondly patted her head. "Good girl." He turned to look at me. "Hi, I'm Sam Wilson." He held out his hand to shake mine, perfectly polite. "I'm Lily Miller. Hi..." I shook his hand but didn't let go for a while. "You..." An awkward look crossed his face. Sophia yanked his hand back from mine in one sharp tug. "What do you think you're doing? I've had it with you. Are you seriously making up excuses to get close to my husband on purpose?" People around us immediately crowded in, pointing and whispering. "Mr. Wilson, do you happen to know Ethan Brown? He also works at the Johnson Group." I wasn't backing down. I grabbed his sleeve and pushed him for an answer. "I don't think... I've heard that name before. What department is he in? I can ask around for you." Suddenly, Sophia grabbed the coffee cup off the table and threw the contents right in my face. "If you're looking for your husband, just call him. Why are you hanging all over mine?" The hot coffee burned so bad I clutched my face. The people watching, like they'd just caught some huge scandal, started loudly trashing me. "Ooh, so she's the side piece!" "Who even tries to be a homewrecker these days? Go take a long look in the mirror." "That's right. His wife here is pretty and has a great body. A plain old frump like you still want to steal her man?" They pulled out their phones and started taking pictures of me. The flashing lights made my head spin. Right when I couldn't take it anymore, Sam reached out and covered the camera that was shoved practically in my face. "Stop taking photos. This is an invasion of privacy." I took the chance to look up and stare at his hand. Perfect. I wasn't sure before, but now I know for certain. Sam Wilson and Ethan Brown are one and the same.
