CHAPTER 2

Bound by Secrets "You have no clue how much I regret abandoning you, Sophie. But this—this is larger than us now. It's about survival." I blink fast, attempting to shake off the words he’s just uttered, but they ring in my thoughts like a thousand echoes bouncing from the walls of my heart. Survival? What does he mean by that? He’s standing in front of me, looking like the man I once knew—handsome, imposing, and menacing. But something about him has transformed. There's a weight in his stare, a shadow in his countenance that wasn’t there before. And it frightens me more than I want to confess. “You’re asking me to trust you again after everything, Alexander?” I scarcely recognize the sound of my voice. It’s shaking, breaking beneath the weight of what I’m attempting to hold back. He strides closer, his stare never leaving mine, his fists still firmly clasped at his sides. “I’m not asking you to forgive me. I’m asking you to join me, Sophie. To stand by my side, for what’s coming. You’ve been a part of this whether you like it or not.” I pull away, pacing across the room in fury. “A part of what, Alexander? What precisely are you dragging me into now?” His eyes tighten. “I’m dragging you into the mess I’ve created, Sophie. I’ve spent the last year fighting a battle that no one knows about. And now, it’s catching up to me. To us. You’ve always been my weakness, Sophie. And I can’t allow anyone to use it against me.” I halt dead in my tracks. “Your weakness? What are you talking about?” “You.” He exhales sharply, his voice low. “The way I left you, the way I pushed you out of my life—everything I did was to protect you. But now, everything’s going apart. I’m not only battling for control of my family’s enterprise. I’m battling for my life. And for yours, too.” My heart quickens as his words hang in the air. Fighting for my life? This is lunacy. “You think I’m just going to step into this, Alexander? After all the anguish you caused me?” My voice is barely above a whisper, yet it’s heavy with accusation. “You don’t get to come back and drag me into your mess. Not after what you did.” He advances toward me with purpose, his every step measured, and suddenly, he’s right in front of me, closing the space I’ve frantically attempted to build. I can feel the heat from his body radiating against mine. “I’m not asking you to forgive me. I’m asking you to survive with me. I need you, Sophie. And not simply because of the contract. I need you because we’re running out of time.” The tension between us is electric, like static before a storm. My heart is beating, but I refuse to let him know the effect he has on me. I cross my arms over my chest, attempting to restore some sense of control. “What’s going on, Alexander?” I demand, my voice wavering despite my best efforts. “Why now? What’s the true reason you’re here?” He hesitates for a few minutes, his eyes flashing with doubt before he responds. “I never meant to hurt you. You have to believe that.” He drags a hand through his black hair, irritation clear in his actions. “But things have changed. And the reality is, I can’t protect you from what’s coming unless you’re with me.” “I don’t need you to protect me,” I say, too soon, too defensively. “I’ve done just fine without you.” “You think that’s true?” His voice tightens, the edge harsh. “You think you’ve been fine? Then why is it that you’re continually looking over your shoulder? Why do I see the terror in your eyes every time you come into a room, Sophie?” I don’t say anything. I can’t. He’s right. Ever since he left, I’ve felt like I’ve been running—running from everything, from the past, from the truth, and most of all, from him. “I can help you,” he adds, his tone calmer now, but the weight of his words still weighs on my chest. “But I can’t do it alone. You’re the one thing in this world I’ve never been able to manage, Sophie. And maybe that’s why I need you now more than ever.” The honesty in his speech throws me off guard. It feels too raw, too genuine to reject, yet I can’t allow myself to believe him. Not again. Not after everything. “Why should I trust you now?” I ask my voice barely a whisper, my heart beating in my ears. He advances closer, his body inches from mine. I can smell his fragrance, and feel his breath on my flesh. “Because, Sophie,” he adds, his voice low and gravelly, “I’ll do anything to keep you safe. I’ll ruin all I’ve built if it means keeping you out of harm’s way.” I meet his stare, his blue eyes strong, unrelenting. But I don’t know what to trust anymore. I want to feel the warmth of his words, to submit to the guy I once loved. But I can’t. Not when all I’ve built, everything I’ve worked for, is in jeopardy. “I can’t do this, Alexander,” I mumble, shaking my head, and attempting to break away from the magnetic pull between us. “You’re asking too much of me. I can’t be part of your world.” His face tightens, the mask of control falling back into place. “You already are, Sophie. And whether you acknowledge it or not, you’re embroiled in this mess. The only question now is whether you’re going to fight with me, or against me.” I’m frozen. The words resound in my thoughts as if they were engraved in stone. I want to walk away. I want to close this door for good. But his grasp on my heart is unyielding, and the urge to comprehend why he’s returned, why he’s suddenly here, keeps me stuck to the place. I glance aside, attempting to focus on anything, anything, other than the hazardous tension between us. “What’s going to happen now?” I ask, the words flowing out before I can stop them. “Now?” he says, his voice dropping into something deeper. “Now, we wait.” I feel a shudder slide down my spine at the finality in his tone. The air between us is thick with unspoken things, with the weight of the past and the uncertainty of the future. “I won’t be a pawn in your game, Alexander,” I say, a touch of indignation in my voice, even though I know how empty it sounds. His eyes flash with something deadly. “You never were, Sophie. But you’re going to discover just how deep this game goes. And when you do, you’ll wish you’d stayed close.” The phone rings again, piercing through the tension in the room. Alexander takes it without hesitation, his gaze narrowing as he listens to the voice on the other end. I can see the shift in him—something dark, something urgent in the way his jaw clenches, in the way his stance stiffens. “What is it?” I inquire, panic crawling up my spine. He turns to me, his face ashen, eyes frigid. “We’re running out of time. You’re not secure here anymore.” My stomach lurches, and before I can respond, the sound of a car skidding to a halt outside the building permeates the room. My pulse races. “What’s happening?” I ask, my breath seizing in my throat. Without further word, he takes my wrist, dragging me toward the door. “Come with me, Sophie. Now. There’s no time to explain.” The door smashes open, and I barely have time to react before we're carried into the unknown.
