Keenan never did ask Evan to move in with him. They continued to see each other for the rest of the school year. Then one evening, toward the end of the term, Keenan told Evan he had applied for and received a grant to finish his veterinary studies at Michigan State. He would be leaving Wisconsin at the end of the semester. When Evan asked why, Keenan explained he felt a fresh perspective on veterinary care would be good for him.
Evan immediately offered to transfer schools and go with Keenan. This forced Keenan to admit while he cared deeply for Evan, he didn’t have the same feelings for Evan as Evan did for him, and it would be better if they parted company so Evan could move on. Keenan hated even saying those words as he had failed so miserably at his attempt to do just that.
