As we are getting out of the Hazel says. "Thank you Leigh, nobody else goes with me to these less crowded areas around town." "Oh your welcome Hazel!" I say walking around to her side of the car. Before I can stop myself I give her a hug. I pull back my cheeks on fire, they are probably a good shade of pink. Like a younger me, I really want to hold hands with the pretty girl and walk around in school but I know here I can't do that. Not only would that out me to the school by gossipers, it will also be told as you are older than that. I wait there for Hazel to grab her bags and then we walk side by side to the front of the building.
Once we get to the front doors I open the door, and hold it open for Hazel. In return she smiles, and my heart melts. Together we walk to the front office to get our schedules'. "Welcome back Hazel! And welcome Leigh!" Says the principal. I don't know what to say so I just smile. "Here are your guys schedules' for the year. Have a good first day!" Principal lady says, so Hazel and I turn to leave assuming that she was done talking. We get to the door and principal says. "Leigh, don't worry about being late to classes today; we understand being the new kid, you can sometimes get lost." I just nod my head yes, and then walk out after Hazel. I breathe out a sigh of relief. I look back up from the ground, my eyes lock with Hazel and we burst out laughing. Once we stop laughing we see a group of girls walking through the halls.
I look down at my schedule but I can't concentrate on it, it feels like people are looking at me. I look back to see a couple of the girls just staring at me, it's making me uncomfortable. So instinctively I move closer to Hazel. The girls just chuckle and tap on the girls' shoulders that aren't looking at me/us (Hazel and I), then all of them start whispering stuff walking closer to the front office. I look at Hazel and say. "Do you know them?" Hazel just nods her head yes, her whole demeaner has changed. She seems to not like these group of girls. As the girls walk past us I could hear parts of their conversations. It was something like 'well, there's the new girl everybody's been talk....' and 'they look like lesbians....' and 'think they're together...' and something about keeping their boyfriends away. This is more confusing than higher class math.
Hazel takes my hand and leads me down a different hall. Which I don't say anything because, hey I got what I wanted. I wanted to hold her hand. She stops near a library. "You okay?" I say looking at Hazel worried, these girls must have taken a toll on her. "Oh, yeah I'm fine. Those girls are my sisters friends." She says. "Do they not like you?" I say confused, I don't know who couldn't like Hazel. "It's not me they hate, they hate my sexuality." "Oh." "Anyway, do you wanna check our schedules together?" I ask, not wanting to leave Hazel yet. I don't want to be by myself anyway, but I like Hazel's company. "Sure! We can use the library if you want, nobodies here?" She says and I nod. We walk in and sit down at the first table. "What do you have?" I ask. "I have Science, English, Art, Life Skills, Band, and History." She says and looks at me telling me with her eyes that that's all she has. "I have Science, Life Skills, Art, Science, English, Choir, and History!" I say excitedly. "We have three classes together!" Hazel and I say at the same time making us burst in to a laugh. That's when the warning bell rings. "We better get going!" Hazel says. I follow her to our first class.
We walk in with smiles. Most of the classroom is filled but way in the back there is two seats next to each other still open. Hazel takes my hand again but this time we rush to the seats in the back. "Slow down you too, don't need to trip and fall." Says our female science teacher. "Sorry ma'am!" Hazel says as we take our seats. It's hard for us to contain our laughter, but we manage to do it. The second bell rings and our teacher walks to the front of the class and says. "Okay class, my name is Mia Stones but you can call me Mrs. Stones. Today we have a new student and I'd like to welcome her. Please stand up Leigh." I don't want to, but I slowly stand up. Once all the way up, some classmates say hi. "You can take a seat now." Mrs. Stones says and I do, quickly. My cheeks burning crimson. I put my head in my arms, to hide my face. "Hey, you okay?" I hear Hazel whisper. "Yeah." I say bringing my head up. My face is still burning but, have to try concentrating on class right. Science is pretty easy! The bell rings and everybody gets up and starts to leave. Hazel and I follow suit.
Out of the classroom, I look down to see what number my next class is. Hazel walks out and we start walking different ways. "See you later!" I say waving and smiling. "See you in art." She says waving and smiling. Walking Life Skills, or so I thought. Walking down the hall to find it looking at the numbers as I go, but they were the wrong numbers. So I went the other and still didn't find it. I go up the stairs and walk down that hall, still the wrong numbers. Hearing the bell to start class just makes my anxiety shoot up. I walk through the next hall, still wrong. "Where did I not go?!" I whisper to myself. Going back down the stairs. I find another hall downstairs. I'm already ten to fifteen minutes late and I'm still looking for this certain number. Finally I found! I walk in the room and head to the farthest seat in the back. "Glad you could join us, miss Leigh." Is all I could figure out the teacher was saying with the pounding in my ears. I couldn't focus on anything in this class. Whoops!
