Chapter Nine
Pain she'd never experienced before racked through her body, the kind that dragged through her whole being like chains underwater, keeping her trapped somewhere between sleep and consciousness.
She was screaming but nobody seemed to hear her.
Rumi drifted in the darkness surrounding her, voices echoed around her distant at first.
“…silver poisoning should’ve stopped her heart…” A man’s voice, rough and unfamiliar said.
“Her body got rid of the bullet. I've never seen anything like it.” another voice, a woman this time said in wonder.
“That’s impossible. What did Kael say about this?”
Rumi didn't get what the response after that was but she had so many questions; who are these people and who is Kael?
She tried to open her eyes but couldn't. Her body felt too heavy, her skin was ice cold even though her body felt like it was on fire.
“She’s burning up again.”
That voice…it sounded familiar and comforting for some reason.
“The bullet’s out why isn't she healing completely?" The female voice said.
“That's because the poison isn't completely out of her system yet."
Rumi felt hands against her wrist. Then suddenly heat exploded beneath her skin and a low growl vibrated deep in her chest.

As soon as Kael stepped out of the cabin, Darius grabbed his arm and pulled him to the side.
“so…do you think it’s her?” he asked.
“i’m not sure.” Kael replied.

The room went silent. Rumi drifted again.
This time, she dreamed.
Blood covered the forest floor. Hunters were screaming, wolves were running and somewhere in the darkness, something with crimson eyes watched her, sending a chilling fear through her bones.
Rumi tried to run, the creature followed slowly, patiently. Its massive shadow stretched across the trees.
She stumbled backwards and slammed into a hard chest, strong arms caught her instantly as silver eyes stared into hers.
Relief flooded her so fast it hurt.
The monster in the woods stopped moving, it was waiting and watching now.
The silver eyed stranger stepped in front of her protectively and the creature turned and left.
Rumi woke with a gasp.
***
Firelight flickered softly across wooden walls.
For several seconds she stared blankly upward, disoriented before it hit her that she wasn't in the forest anymore. It doesn't look like Black Moon territory either but a small cabin.
Warmth surrounded her. Her body felt weak, but no longer freezing.
The scent of herbs and smoke filled the air. Rumi shifted slightly but pain stabbed through her ribs instantly.
She let out a sharp breath.
“don’t try to get up just yet, your body is still healing .”
A familiar voice warned from nearby. Rumi turned her head slowly.
The silver eyed man sat beside the bed in a wooden chair, leaning forward with his forearms resting against his knees. Shadows flickered across the sharp lines of his face beneath the firelight.
His silver eyes locked onto hers immediately.
“It's good to see you alive and well. I don’t think we’ve been properly introduced, my name is Kael."
“Where am I?" Rumi whispered hoarsely.
"You're somewhere safe.” He replied. Rumi waited for him to elaborate where that somewhere safe was when he didn't she asked.
"How long was I out?”
“Three days.”
Her eyes widened slightly, three days? She panicked instantly.
“The hunters…”
“Gone.”
“Tristan and his men…”
“Alive. Unfortunately."
Rumi swallowed painfully. Then the memory returned all at once.
Chaos as soon as the hunters arrived, the bullet which pierced her side… The power within her exploding out of control.
Her breathing became uneven.
Kael noticed immediately. “ Rest easy they can't find you here” he assured her.
Rumi nodded in relief.
Her gaze quickly dropped to her mid section when she realized there was no blood or bandages. Carefully, she touched the area, it was still a little sore but there was no wound and Rumi was pretty sure she got shot unless she dreamed all of that up too.
Her chest tightened.
“I healed…”
“You expelled the bullet before your body repaired itself.”
Rumi froze.
Fragments of memory flashed through her mind…The bullet tearing from her flesh in the throes of feverish agony had her stomach twisting.
“Wh
at am I?” she whispered, the question slipping out before she could stop it.
Silence filled the cabin.
