Chapter Eight One second the wolf was airborne and the next he was caught by the throat mid-lunge and slammed into the ground hard enough to shake the clearing. The wolf howled in pain. Silence crashed down. The stranger stood over him calmly, one hand still wrapped around the wolf’s throat. The stranger released the wolf abruptly. “Next time,” he said mildly, “I’ll kill him.” The injured wolf scrambled backward immediately, trembling. Tristan’s expression darkened. “You’re threatening pack warriors on Alpha territory.” The stranger looked bored. “You brought frightened pups to hunt something you don’t understand,” he replied. “That was your mistake.” Rumi stiffened as his gaze shifted back to her. “What do you know about her?” tristan demanded. The stranger was silent for a moment. And then he said, “More than your Alpha does.” Rumi’s chest tightened sharply, questions spinning wildly through her head. Who was this man and why did he seem to know what was happening to her? And why did the creature inside her react to him like that? The silver-eyed stranger stepped toward her slowly and the wolves immediately tensed again. Rumi should have been afraid, Instead her body reacted strangely. The closer he got, the quieter the chaos inside her became. The burning beneath her skin eased slightly, the growling softened and her breathing steadied. Relief hit her so suddenly she nearly stumbled. His gaze sharpened slightly. “How long since the awakening began?” Awakening. Rumi was taken aback by his choice of words, doesn’t he mean shift? “I—I don’t know,” she admitted. “Tonight.” His expression darkened instantly. “Only tonight?” Rumi nodded weakly. The stranger cursed softly under his breath. Tristan stepped forward immediately. “You’re not taking her anywhere.” The silver-eyed man looked at him with open disdain now. “You think your Alpha can handle what she is?” “She belongs to the Black Moon Pack.” “No,” the stranger said coldly. “She belonged to the Black Moon Pack but not anymore.” “The Alpha only wants answers,” he said carefully. The stranger laughed softly.“Rolan wants control.” Tristan offered no smart retort because it was true, even Rumi knows it. Alpha Rolan hated uncertainty, not even the slightest hint of weakness, or the thought of him unable to dominate anything completely. And now…Now she had become something unknown and Dangerous. The thing inside her purred darkly at the thought and the stranger’s silver eyes flickered back to hers sharply as though he heard it too. Fear curled through her stomach again. A sudden howl shattered the silence and every wolf stiffened instantly. Another howl answered. Then another. Tristan’s expression changed immediately. “More patrols,” he muttered. But the stranger went completely still, his silver eyes narrowed toward the darkness behind the trees. “No,” he said softly. The word sent immediate tension through the clearing. Rumi felt it too, something was coming. Something bad. The thing inside her rose instantly, alert and furious. Then the forest exploded with movement. “Hunters!” Tristan roared. they burst from the trees in all directions armed with guns, silver blades and crossbows. The forest was soon filled with snarls and gunfire. One hunter aimed directly at Rumi and fired, pain exploded through her side she screamed and slammed onto the ground. For a second she couldn’t breathe. Everything blurred, burning agony spread through her ribs. The last thin g she remembered before darkness took over her was the stranger barking orders to his comrades to take her to safety.
