Chapter Six Rumi ran. Branches tore at her skin as she pushed through the forest blindly, stumbling over roots and rocks in the darkness. Her breathing coming in ragged gasps, uneven and panicked. She didn’t know what frightened her more anymore—the rogues…Or herself. The image of the dead rogue wouldn’t leave her mind. One moment he’d been alive and the next he was lying broken across the clearing and she still didn’t understand how she had done it. “I didn’t even touch him…” she whispered shakily. But deep down, she knew that wasn’t true. Something inside her had touched him. The growl inside her chest rumbled softly, almost pleased. Rumi’s stomach twisted. “Stop it,” she whispered. The voice didn’t answer, but she could still feel it there watching and waiting. The forest stretched endlessly around her. Cold moonlight filtered through the trees in silver streaks, casting strange shadows across the ground. Every sound made her flinch now, every crack of a branch, every gust of wind. She had no idea where she was going only that she needed to get farther away. The thought of Alpha Rolan sent a sharp ache through her chest again. The rejection still throbbed beneath everything else. Why does she still care? He had humiliated her and thrown her away like trash in front of the entire pack and yet somehow a part of her still longed for him. Rumi bit down hard on her lip until she tasted blood. “No,” she whispered fiercely, she wouldn’t think about him anymore it was a matter her self-respect. She heard distant footsteps suddenly and she crouched low instinctively, her newly sharpened senses stretching outward. The strange awareness inside her had become stronger now, almost like it was a part of her Rumi’s pulse quickened. Did those rogues she’d allow to escape came back with reinforcements? The growl inside her chest rumbled warningly, sensing danger. Rumi slowly backed away as a voice suddenly echoed through the trees. “She came this way.” Her blood turned cold instantly. Another voice answered. “The rogue said her eyes glowed bright red.” “find her, she couldn’t have gotten far.’’ Rumi’s heart slammed against her ribs. They were talking about her. “The Alpha wants confirmation,” the first voice continued. They couldn’t be referring to Alpha Rolan could they? The ache in her chest twisted painfully again, Rumi clenched her fists. Why would he care now? He rejected her, he made his choice. Unless— Fear crept down her spine at the thought of him thinking she was dangerous now? The memory of the dead rogue flashed through her mind. Her stomach churned, maybe she was. Branches snapped nearby and Rumi moved instantly, slipping deeper into the forest as quietly as she could. But her body was exhausted. Her legs shook violently beneath her. The strange power raging inside her felt unstable now—like a storm she couldn’t control. “Spread out,” one of the men ordered. Torchlight flickered through the trees. Rumi’s breathing quickened, there were too many and they were all after her. Panic surged before she turned sharply and ran again. “THERE!” The shout exploded behind her as footsteps thundered after her immediately. Rumi sprinted through the forest desperately, branches whipping against her face as she pushed herself harder. “Stop!” She didn’t. Fear clawed through her chest violently. If they caught her—What then? Would Alpha Rolan kill her himself this time?
