**Chloe’s POV**
“We were just talking about you, dear.”
The moment Alexandra kisses the back of my hand, I feel a shiver run down my spine, goosebumps prickling my skin.
What is wrong with this man? Why is he talking to me like that?! And who does he think he's calling 'dear'?!
“What did you just call me? I'm not your—”
Before I can finish my sentence, Alexandra strides over to me, wrapping his arm around my waist. He smiles, looking at me with deep affection. “Don’t worry, darling. I’ve spoken with your father. He’s agreed to let you leave with me.”
I glare at Alexandra, ready to protest, but his words make me gasp in surprise. “Really?!”
“Of course, as I promised you.” Alexandra smirks, raising his chin and glancing at Ethan.
Following his gaze, I see Ethan standing a few steps away, his face dark with anger. His cold eyes are locked on Alexandra’s hand, which is still on my waist. Realizing how close we are, I quickly try to move away.
But Alexandra tightens his grip on me, whispering so only I can hear, “Don’t move.”
I freeze in place.
Ethan’s face grows even darker. His cold gaze sweeps over my face before settling on the older man standing beside me. “What are you doing here, Bernard?”
“I couldn’t find the guard to deliver the letter, so I asked Miss Chloe to bring me,” Bernard says slowly, pulling a finely made sheepskin envelope from his inner coat pocket. “The seal on the envelope is the Lycan’s emblem, so I thought it must be urgent.”
As soon as Bernard mentions the Lycan, the three men in the room all tense up, their expressions becoming serious. This surprises me. Who is this Lycan that even the wealthy Colins family and the ruthless Alexandra fear him?
“Give me the letter,” James says, stepping forward to take the letter from Bernard and immediately reading it from start to finish.
“What does it say?” Alexandra asks curiously.
Ethan glances at Alexandra and replies coldly, “This letter is addressed to the Silvermoon Pack, not the Obsidian Pack. I think you should leave, Alpha Alexandra.”
“Fine. Good luck with it. I doubt it's anything good,” Alexandra shrugs nonchalantly, making a face at me. “Let’s go, Chloe.”
“Okay.”
I glance at Ethan, who stands there with a look of struggle on his face but doesn’t stop me from leaving. For some reason, this makes me feel a sudden loss in my heart.
“Wait.”
Unexpectedly, James calls out to stop Alexandra and me. His face is troubled, and he sighs deeply. “You’re right, Alpha Alexandra. The letter is bad news. The recent rogue unrest in the southern regions has caught the Lycan’s attention. He’s sending a trusted aide to investigate the situation.”
“And what does that have to do with me?” Alexandra pauses, glancing at Ethan intentionally. “As your son said, this letter is for the Silvermoon Pack, not for us.”
“But the Obsidian Pack is also in the southern region, isn't it?” James’s voice is urgent, clearly hoping to persuade the young Alpha to become his ally. “Besides, you and Chloe are about to be engaged. I think—”
“Father!” Ethan interrupts James’s plea. “You’re being too hasty in arranging Chloe’s engagement! I think we should at least discuss this first.”
“I am the Alpha of the Silvermoon Pack, Ethan, and I say it’s settled!” James roars at Ethan.
Ethan’s face falls. He stares at his father, eyes full of resentment, but says nothing more.
“Forgive my son’s rudeness, Alpha Alexandra,” James says, turning to Alexandra with a calmer tone after scolding Ethan. “I’m sure you’ve heard that in recent years, the Lycan has been suppressing some powerful packs, seizing their wealth, and reclaiming their power. The arrival of this letter indicates that the Lycan has set his sights on the southern region, and we are his next target.”
Despite James’s warning, Alexandra remains unmoved, even scoffing. “You are his next target, Alpha James. The wealth of the Obsidian pack is almost nothing compared to the silver moon. So, thank you for the warning, but I’m not worried yet. Let’s go, Chloe.”
“Okay.”
“But this time Lycan has sent Harvey Bones! That man may just be a beta, but in fact, he’s a terrifying monster!”
“Wait, Harvey Bones?!” James’s exclamation finally stops Alexandra in his tracks. I look at him in confusion as he stands still, his face darkening with barely contained rage.
“You mean, The Headman Harvey Bones?!”
“That’s right, The Headman. That’s Harvey’s nickname,” James quickly adds, seeing Alexandra’s reaction. “They say it’s because Harvey is a brutal savage who loves to decapitate his enemies...”
“...and hang their heads.” Alexandra finishes in a deep, deathly tone, his eyes now a dark abyss. “I know Harvey Bones. He once cut off my best friend’s head and hung it on a tree along my path.”
“Oh my god!” I gasp at the gruesome description. “I’m so sorry, Alexandra. That's horrible.”
Alexandra’s murderous gaze softens for a moment as he looks at me, but then it quickly turns cold again.
“I’ll stay until Harvey arrives.”
