**Chloe's POV**
"Thank you for coming, Alpha Alexandra. As the Alpha of the Silver Moon Pack, I have always admired your talents and hope that we can become trusted allies." James Colins says, sitting at the far end of the long table. He raises his glass toward Alexandra, who sits at the other end. "As a sign of my sincerity, I will—"
"Can we skip the pleasantries and get straight to the point, Alpha James?" Alexandra interrupts, showing no regard for courtesy. Despite the mask covering his face, his casual posture suggests that the young Alpha is just as arrogant as the rumors.
"You want to maintain the Colins family's influence and power in the werewolf world, so you married off your elder daughter, Catherine Colins, to the Alpha of the Night Wind Pack. Now, you want to marry your younger daughter, Margaret Colins, to me, despite my notoriety. Am I right, Alpha James?"
Alexandra’s sarcastic words turn James Colins' face red with anger. Yet, due to his role as host or his innate Colins' grace, James holds back and does not confront Alexandra directly.
This only makes me more anxious. I try to move my body and to get James's attention, but it's actually Alexandra who noticed me first.
"So, tell me, Alpha James, which daughter do you intend to marry off to me?" Alexandra's eyes quickly scan over me, his tone indifferent. I freeze in my seat.
"That’s—"
"It’s her! Alex—, Alpha Alexandra," Maggie interrupts. To avoid raising her father's suspicion, she even raises her voice, disguising it to sound different from usual. "The one sitting next to you is Miss Margaret. She is your future mate."
Maggie glances at me as she speaks. Under her direction, Alexandra looks over at me. Despite my desperate effort to deny it, the strange potion controls my body, leaving me unable to move.
"Mate?" Alexandra's disdainful gaze sweeps over me before he lets out a cold laugh. "This woman doesn’t even have her wolf yet. How could she possibly be my mate?!"
"I understand your concerns, Alpha Alexandra." Victoria stops Maggie from arguing with a look, then turns to Alexandra with a fawning smile. "But I assure you this won’t affect the alliance between the Silver Moon Pack and the Obsidian Pack. We can arrange the engagement tonight, and when my daughter has her wolf, you can be united under the Moon Goddess’ blessing..."
"That’s not my point, Mrs. Colins." Alexandra sneers. "Even if your daughter gets her wolf, so what? The chances of her being my fated mate are slim. With all due respect, I don't think your daughter is the one for me."
"The fated mate?!"
James and Victoria’s faces reveal their shock. "So, Alpha Alexandra, you're saying that your Luna must be your fated mate?!"
"Of course." Facing their disbelief, Alpha Alexandra smiles confidently. "What kind of werewolves are we if we don't let our own wolves to find our mates, but instead marries for power and status? We might call ourselves humans as well!"
"How dare you speak to me with such disrespect!" James Colins’ fury erupts, smashing his wine glass on the table. Red wine spills onto the lace-covered tablecloth, resembling a pool of blood. "As the Alpha of the Silver Moon Pack, I sincerely invited you to my home, offering my daughter to you to form an alliance. My intentions were nothing but genuine! But you, Alexandra Maxwell, repeatedly insult me and my family with your rude attitude, showing no decorum or honor of an Alpha! If that’s the case, consider my proposal withdrawn and leave my house!"
James’s outburst leaves everyone frozen in place, except Alexandra. From my place, I catch a glint of satisfaction in his eyes.
"I’ve been thinking of leaving anyway. But thanks for the dinner, Alpha James." Alexandra downs his wine, then dramatically tosses his mask into the air.
The dining room lights shine on Alexandra's face, highlighting his handsome. His wavy brown hair flutters freely, deep eyes, a smirk on his lips all reveal the rebellious nature of this young Alpha. As Alexandra rises, everyone raised their eyes as he is at least 6’2". Only when their necks ache do they snap out of their reverie.
"You really are the Alpha of the Obsidian Pack, Alexandra?!" Maggie is the first to speak, her voice trembling with excitement. "But I heard rumors—"
"Only fools let others' words control their minds," Alexandra sneers at Maggie with disdain in his voice. "But I have to be thankful there are so many idiots like you in the world, miss. Otherwise, dealing with occasions like tonight would be a lot more troublesome."
Alexandra shifts his gaze to the speechless James Colins. "Until next time, Alpha James."
"Wait!" Maggie’s shout draws everyone’s attention, even Alexandra's.
"Maggie!"
Victoria stands, trying to stop her, but it’s too late. Maggie rips off her mask, then roughly tears off mine. "I am Margaret Colins, Alpha Alexandra! The one to marry you is me, not this woman!"
James gasps at Maggie’s actions, glaring at her. "How dare you, girl! Alpha Alexandra, please believe me, this is not my intention that we—"
Alexandra raises a hand, silencing James. He looks at me with a hint of appreciation and curiosity, as if assessing a prey. His gaze makes me so uncomfortable that I look away, frowning.
Noticing my reaction, Alexandra chuckles, then turns to the hopeful Maggie. "So?!"
Blushing, Maggie looks like a love-struck teenager. "So, I-I am willing to marry you and become your Luna, Alpha Alexandra."
"Were you not listening, or are you too stupid to understand my words?" Alexandra’s harsh words drain the color from Maggie’s face. "I won’t marry a Colins daughter. But if I had to choose one, I’d rather pick that mute girl. At least she would say nothing stupid to borther me, unlike you, Miss Margaret!"
Maggie bursts into tears, and James's patience reaches its limit. "That’s enough! Now, get out of my house!"
"Fine." Alexandra’s expression darkens at the second dismissal. He signals to his men waiting outside the dining room, and several burly men in black follow him immediatiely.
DONG!
The midnight chime rings out, and my eyes widen. At 18, I am about to have my wolf!
Excitement or nervousness, I can’t tell, but I suddenly feel a strange force surging through me. The potion Maggie gave me keeps me still, and the force, unable to find an outlet, causes my heart to constrict painfully, and my heartbeat accelerating beyond my body's limits. The pain is excruciating, as if tearing me apart.
"Oh my Goddess, what’s wrong with her?!"
"Ah!!"
With a scream of agony, I collapse from my chair. I close my eyes and wait for the expected pain to arrive. But to my surprise, my body doesn't fall on the cold floor, but in a warm embrace.
"Alpha Alexandra!"
Alexandra?! Hearing Maggie’s scream, I open my eyes and meet Alexandra’s deep dark eyes. Unlike before, his eyes now hold warmth and emotion.
"I finally found you, my fated mate."
"What?!"
As Maggie’s scream echoes, I close my eyes and lose consciousness.
