Chapter Seven: The Betrayal

744 Words
The morning light filtered weakly through the blinds of Afolayan Holdings, but inside the office, shadows lingered. Zara’s eyes were fixed on the city below, watching the streets like a predator, even though she knew danger could be anywhere — even here, inside the building. Her phone buzzed. A text from an unknown number: You’re not ready for what’s coming. Her pulse tightened. Not fear. Anticipation. Adrenaline. A knock at the office door startled her. “Adebayo?” she called. He entered, coffee in hand, calm as ever, but she could see it — the tension under his perfect control. “Something happened last night,” he said, voice low. “A leak.” Zara froze. “A leak?” “Yes,” he said, walking closer. “Someone gave the third faction access to critical intel — information about both our families, both our operations. And…” He hesitated, eyes darkening. “…they trusted you enough to let it happen.” Her stomach dropped. “What? That’s… impossible. I—” “I don’t know if it’s intentional or accidental,” he said, cutting her off. “But it happened while you were inside the strategy room. You were the last to access the files before they disappeared.” Her heart pounded. Not because of guilt — she hadn’t done it — but because he looked at her differently now. Suspicion, betrayal, accusation hidden behind his calm mask. “I didn’t—” she started, but he held up a hand. “Save it,” he said. “Right now, I don’t know if I can trust anyone. And that includes you.” The words hit harder than any physical blow. She had survived bullets, intruders, and chaos… and now she was facing his doubt, the one person she had started to rely on. She backed up, her mind racing. “You think I did it?” “I don’t know,” he said, stepping closer, eyes piercing. “But you were there. You were the only one with access. Either you made a mistake, or someone used you.” Zara’s hands clenched. Her pulse wasn’t just adrenaline now — it was anger, frustration, and something dangerous. “You don’t believe me,” she said, voice trembling but fierce. “You’ve seen what I can do. You’ve seen how I handle myself. You don’t just turn on me.” He didn’t answer immediately. Instead, he studied her, watching every movement, every reaction. The silence between them was sharp, electric. Then he leaned in slightly, close enough for her to feel his warmth, the subtle scent of him filling the small office. “You need to understand something,” he said softly, dangerously. “If this leak isn’t fixed, people could die. And I can’t afford to hesitate — not with you, not with anyone.” Her chest tightened. “Then trust me. I’ll find the leak. I’ll prove I didn’t—” Before she could finish, an alert flashed across the security feed. A live intrusion at the Afolayan Holdings server room. Both of them moved instantly, hearts pounding, feet in sync, adrenaline and tension combining in a rhythm only danger could create. When they reached the server room, the door had been forced open. Equipment was tampered with. Files were gone. A figure darted from the shadows. Zara lunged instinctively, catching the intruder’s sleeve. He spun — and in the flash of recognition, she froze. It wasn’t a stranger. It was someone she thought was an ally. Adebayo’s hand was on hers, steadying her. “Who?” he demanded, voice sharp. Zara’s stomach twisted. “I… I thought I could trust him.” The intruder smirked. “Trust is expensive,” he said, voice mocking. “And some people pay the price too late.” Shots fired. Chaos erupted. Adebayo pulled Zara behind the console, shielding her as the intruder tried to escape. They moved together, perfect synchronization born of necessity and tension, fighting side by side. After the intruder was subdued, both were breathing hard. Hearts racing. Clothes rumpled. Hair disheveled. Zara met Adebayo’s gaze. Something unspoken passed between them: fear, relief, anger… and desire. “You’re still alive,” he said quietly, voice low, almost intimate. “I’m not dead yet,” she replied, tone sharp, but her chest heaved. He didn’t touch her. Not yet. But the air between them sizzled with everything they weren’t ready to say aloud.
