Chapter 2

Her lips were pale, and she dabbed at her tears weakly. "Should I not have come back to disrupt your happy life?" Her mother-in-law hurried over to comfort her. "Silly girl, what nonsense are you talking about? Now that your parents are gone, I'll be your family from now on. Treat this place as your home, and I'll care for you as if you were my own daughter." Fiora looked at Evander through tear-filled eyes, her expression a mix of hope and unease. "Is that true?" Evander nodded reassuringly. "It is true. This is your home now. You are like a sister to me, and we are all your family. Don't ever feel like a stranger here." Fiora turned her gaze toward me. There was a faint, triumphant challenge in her eyes, as if she already considered herself the winner. 'Boring.' With no interest in the scene, I sat down on the sofa and ate the fruit the housekeeper had prepared, feeling as though I were watching a farce that had nothing to do with me. Seeing that I remained silent, Fiora mistook my indifference for fear and retreat. She spoke up boldly, "Evander, now that I've returned, shouldn't you get a divorce from her?" The moment the words left her mouth, an eerie silence fell over the living room. When no one agreed with her immediately, a flicker of discontent crossed Fiora's face. She added, "Evander, you promised once that when we grew up, you would marry me." My mother-in-law gave an awkward laugh. "Fiora, what kind of foolish talk is this? How can you take words from childhood games seriously?" Evander pushed her away, his face draining of color in alarm. "Stop talking nonsense. Isolde and I have a strong relationship. There is no possibility of a divorce." "Fiora, Evander only thinks of you as a sister. You must not speak such things," my father-in-law said in a low, stern voice. Evander and his parents all turned toward me anxiously, as if afraid I would grow angry over what had happened. I let out a soft laugh. I could see right through Fiora's cheap little scheme. Just because I did not care did not mean she could act recklessly. I stood up and walked calmly over to Evander. Raising my hand, I slapped him hard across the face, then said only, "Come find me once you've cleaned up this mess of yours." With that, I turned and walked out of the Carrington residence in my high heels, carrying myself like a noble lady, not a trace of sadness showed on my face.
