MARAH POV
The sun shimmered through the windows indicating that morning has arrived. I roll over to see a sleeping Lucas. I snuggled into him and laid there listening to his heart as memories of last night dance in my mind.
Maya, do you really think we’ll ever find happiness greater than what we have right here, right now? I can’t imagine anything better. You know I can’t feel a mate bond until we’re closer to our Alpha 21 but I know the idea of not being with him cuts deep inside. I know he doesn’t have a wolf so how is that possible? The same way it’s possible with other human/wolf mates. The moon goddess see’s what’s missing from one person and creates the other, so they complement one another. I mean what if we tell the elders that we’ve found our mate ahead of time? I’m afraid not. I’ve heard their wolves – some are sympathetic to our situation but the majority hate humans so much that it clouds any judgement of reality.
Lucas starts to stir and moves his arm so that it is tighter around my body. I raise my head slightly to see if I need to move. He tightens the grip saying, “Let’s just stay like this for a little while longer.” Of course, I don’t refuse.
“How about breakfast? I can burn some toast and overcook bacon.” I say grinning. He laughs a little but assures me that whatever I make will be fine with him. I laugh because obviously he has much more faith in my kitchen skills than I do.
We finally sit down to a bowl of cereal. Yes, cereal. See I tried making breakfast but when the house bellowed out smoke from the toaster catching fire and then the bacon looking scorched, well let’s say cereal is the best choice.
“I’m going to jump in the tub since there’s no shower. Ugh! I feel like we’re in the stone age.” I say. He lifts his eyebrow asking, “Need a hand? I don’t think you can adequately wash your back without my assistance.” He’s killing me. Of course, I need help with “washing my back.”
Lucas hands me a towel once he gets out of the tub with all his glory showing off for me. He holds the towel up and wraps me tightly, “So, we’ll be doing this again later this evening. It’s quite muddy in the mines.” I’m guessing he’s ready for me to bail out because most girls don’t do dirt. Remember, I’m a wolf so anytime I get a chance to be out in the wild, I’m all for it!
“Sweet!!!” I say. And on the road we head to his mother’s house. I didn’t get to see it well last night when we dropped off Larissa and Kara. I’m nervous to meet Evie, Lucas’ mother. I hope that she is nice like both Larissa and Lucas. Plus, I hope she likes me.
We pull up to a modest size house. It’s all one floor. It looks to be about 1500 sq ft or so. It’s white siding, a large porch that extends two full size windows and a door. There are rocking chairs there and flower beds at the end of the steps. The forest surrounds the house with huge oak trees. In the front yard is a flowing tree. I think they’re a rhododendron but that is also not something I’m familiar.
A lady stands at the door while Lucas and I walk towards the porch. She looks like an older version of Larissa. She’s just a little taller at probably 5’6 or 5’7. She has on jeans, work boots, a t-shirt that reads “Bad b***h”. She opens the door and runs to Lucas. He catches her as she jumps in his arms. He swings her around while hugging. I hear him say, “I’ve missed you so much mom! I love you.” I then see tears in his eyes as he has stopped hugging his mom. I’m standing there with water forming in my eyes too but try to keep them from rolling down my face.
She finally pulls from Lucas saying, “I love you too son. I’ve missed you so much also.” They stay there with their foreheads together another minute or so before she pulls back and looks at me. “You must be Marah! My son mentioned his girlfriend, but I had no idea what a beauty you are. Plus, my daughter hasn’t stopped talking about you all morning. I’m Evie Turner and it is so nice to finally meet the one and only, Marah.”
I extend my hand, “Hello Ms. Turner, it’s my pleasure.” She waves her hand, “Call me Evie or mom. Turner was that ex’s name.” She stops looking like she wanted to say more but stopped. I’m guessing she decided to not say anything about Lucas’ father at this time. “Come on in. I’ll introduce you to my friend, Ron. He’s been staying here while looking for a job in the city.”
We walk into the house. It’s nice and cozy. Inside the entrance is the living room with the kitchen off to the side. There are 3 doors lining the back wall and 1 door to the side. It’s laid out exactly as I suspected with the bathroom in the middle. “Larissa and Kara are in her old room if you want to join them. It’s the 1st door on the left.” Evie says. I shake my head and thank her while venturing into the bedroom.
“Hey!” I say softly as I enter the room. Larissa screams, “Marah! It’s about time. You all been making babies or what?” I laugh and shake my head no! “No babies!” Kara mind-links me, “No babies but I bet you f****d like bunnies.” Seriously! What is up with everyone wanting to know my love life.
LUCAS POV
We pull up to mom’s house. I’m nervous since the last time I saw her it ended with me saying I never wanted to see her again. I was so mad that she and dad made the decision that it was best for Larissa and I to move to Ohio to live with him. Mom said she was financially unable to provide for us like our dad could do and this was best. I honestly felt abandoned.
When she ran out the door and jumped, I had no choice but to catch her. Before I knew it I was telling her how much I missed her and that I loved her. Again, I have no idea how or when I became so mushy. Marah was introduced and we went into the house. That’s when I caught a glimpse of Ron. The biggest loser and slob this side of the Mississippi river. He didn’t bother to even say hello. He just sat there watching tv in his dirty ass sweatpants and no shirt. It didn’t look like he’s shaved in months, yet mom says he’s ‘looking’ for a job.
Marah finds her way to the room with Larissa and Kara. Luckily, Stephen pulls up with the 4-wheelers in the back of his truck. I go get the keys for the shed because we have another that can be used. Stephen yells, “Lucas, I brought my cousin Brittany with me. She wanted to go too, and she can ride with Larissa.” I yell back, “Sounds good. Let’s make sure we have plenty of gas and supplies in case we get stuck. Hey, do you have the chain you borrowed last time.” Smiling like a mischievous spoiled brat, “You have so little faith in me. Yes, I brought the chain. I see you brought the ball with you.” Huh? “You know the ball and chain.” He laughs and I say, “You’re an ass. That ball and chain could kick your ass.”
The girls come bouncing out. All wearing jeans, t-shirts and boots. “Don’t forget goggles. It rained last night and I’m sure there’s plenty of mud.” I mention. The last time we were out, I didn’t wear goggles and mud ended up in my eye. I swear I couldn’t see for days.
I jump on and start. Marah stands there, “Come on babe! Jump on.” She looks and motions for me to scoot back. I’m like “What?”
“I’m driving.” She says. Ok, that means she’ll be in front and I can hold on to her. I sure hope she knows how to drive one. These can be very dangerous, and I’d hate us to flip. “Are you sure? You’ll need to take it easy until you get familiar.” The look I get scares me. Stephen burst out laughing, “Dude, I think you better scoot your ass back. I wouldn’t want to tackle a pissed off al…pretty lady.”
I finally relent, “Fine but I get to drive some too.” She hops on the front and I start showing her the gears and how to shift. She turns her head to me, “You might want to hold on.” Yes ma’am. I grab her around her waist and rub her belly.
Holy s**t she takes off and about throws me from the 4-wheeler. We are off following behind Stephen and Kara while Larissa and Brittany are behind us. I glance back occasionally to make sure that they are safe. Where did this girl learn how to drive? She’s dodging trees and climbing hills like a pro. I’m seriously turned on so much by this girl.
We stop for a few minutes to look around at the view and take a piss break. We pop open beers and of course Marah’s Coke Zero. It’s now around 1 o’clock in the afternoon. The sun is shining, and the day is around 80 degrees. Marah is off talking with Larissa, Stephen and Kara are playing with each other’s tongues, and Brittany is hanging around me. We make small talk – apparently, she’s visiting from her house in Kentucky.
She’s our age and attractive. She’s around 5’6” dark hair, dark eyes and medium build. She has totally been flirting with me all day. She asks to see my phone. I hand it to her, and she inputs her name and number. She winks at me saying, “When your tired of the same ol’ same ol’ give me a call. I’d like to hang out.” I shrug it off. “I’m with Marah. Hopefully she won’t tire of me because no chance in hell I’ll tire of her. But I appreciate the gesture.” She giggles. I swear I hear a growl from behind me. What is it with these girls sounding like their growling? I think it’s kind of sexy though.
“Brittany, can I speak with you for just a moment?” Marah says. I walk up to her rubbing her shoulders and pull her into a hug. “Baby, you have nothing to worry about!” I say to her. She shrugs saying, “I know but she doesn’t. Don’t worry, I won’t kick her ass, but she doesn’t know that.”
It honestly feels nice to know that Marah is jealous. I’ve never thought about it before and thought it was nuts for jealousy. Soon, both girls come back and seem in good terms. I notice Brittany still looks a little mad but is trying to cover it up.
“Keys” Marah says holding out her hand. “Oh no you don’t, my turn you wild, crazy, hot, sexy, gorgeous, luscious girlfriend of MINE.” She looks at me at the last word and I swear her eyes changed colors to an even bluer color and flashed. She walked right up to me, pushed me onto the seat of the 4-wheeler, straddled my hips and kissed me with such passion that everyone was gasping. Larissa finally speaks up, “Get a freaking room.” Marah pulls away so we can breathe and laughs at Larissa. We set there breathing hard with our foreheads together. “That was close. The beast inside of me about took advantage of you!” She giggles. Somehow, I was so turned on now. I had to turn around on the 4-wheeler so no one could see the raging hard-on.
“Jump on, baby!” I say and she slid behind me placing her arms around my waist with her hands hanging between my crotch. I know she wasn’t trying to grab or anything but the slightest move she made had my little friend begging for more of her touch.
Not fully paying attention was stupid. Stephen swerved before I notice causing me to react but not in time. Ahead was a huge hole filled with water and mud. We plunged into the muddy water. Luckily the 4-wheeler was able to grab the bottom and keep moving until we cleared the other side. I immediately stopped, jumped off and turned to check to see if Marah was hurt.
I look and there she was – mud dripping from her hair and covering her entire back side. The only non-muddy part of her body was her front that had been pressed against me. She luckily was laughing her ass off. She pulls mud from her hair and flicks it at me. “Keys, now! I’m driving the rest of the way.”
We show back up at the house. Mom has steaks and corn on the cob on the grill. I’m sure baked potatoes are in the oven plus her famous bread pudding. Getting off the 4-wheeler, we are still covered but it’s now dry mud. “Come follow me. We have a mud room out back with an outdoor shower. It’s cold water but it will at least get the mud off. I probably have sweats and a t-shirt still in the house. I’ll see if Larissa will go get for us.”
Sure enough, I had a change of clothes for myself and for her. Our outdoor scrubbing was a blast. I may never be able to shower by myself again. We finally enter the side yard where the picnic table is set. “You kids must have had a good time. I’ve not seen Lucas smile this much in years.” Mom says.
“Ms. Oh I mean Evie, your son is a devil. He drove in a hole full of mud and water on purpose. There is no way he couldn’t have noticed it. I think he should be punished.” Marah said without thinking about the connotation of what she said.
My mom who has always been pretty open and down to earth with us leans into Marah, “Sweetie, you have my permission to punish Lucas however you like.” “OMG! MOM! Stop, you’re embarrassing me.” I yelled. Laughter boomed at the table.
After a couple hours of just enjoying the evening, we decided to head back to the cabin. Kara was spending the night at Stephen’s. I know she likes him so they must be hooking up. Way to go Stephen. Larissa is also going and is planning a movie night with Brittany.
“We’ll pick you girls up tomorrow at 11 am so we can head back to Ohio.” I say. Then I turn to mom to say our goodbye.
“Mom, I’ll visit more often. I’m sorry I’ve been so mad. It’s hard you know. I thought for sure that you and dad would get back together like you always did in the past. Then, the divorce. Then, he remarries. It’s just sucks. You know?” I blurt out. She brings me into a hug. “Lucas, it’s ok to be mad. None of our problems were because of you or your sister. Couples who are so in love at one point in their lives sometimes drift apart. No matter how much you work on rekindling the flame, sometimes it’s just meant to move on. That’s what happened with your father and I. We just moved on and now I think you need to find forgiveness for him too. I know he’s hurting for the both of you. One thing’s for sure, neither of us have ever stopped loving you or Larissa with the same devotion. From the day you were born, you’ve always been loved.” You guessed; I’m tearing up but suck it up. “Thanks mom. Love you!” I say finally walking away.
