Chapter Six: The Warning

550 Words
Lena stood in front of the mirror, adjusting the collar of her cream silk blouse. Her reflection stared back—flawless makeup, designer clothes, and a diamond ring that felt heavier by the day. She looked like someone who belonged in Grayson Wolfe’s world. But inside, she felt like an imposter. The knock on the door was sharp, impatient. “Come in,” she called. Maya stepped in, her expression tight. “You need to see this.” Lena took the tablet from her friend and scanned the screen. A blog post—anonymous, but clearly written by someone with insider knowledge. “Sources close to Wolfe Industries suggest the billionaire’s new bride is part of a strategic cover-up. Rumors of a secret clause in the marriage contract are swirling. Is Lena Moretti just another pawn in Grayson Wolfe’s empire?” Lena’s stomach dropped. “I thought you said this was under control,” Maya said. “I did,” Lena replied, her voice low. “Grayson said he’d handle it.” Maya folded her arms. “Do you trust him?” Lena hesitated. “I don’t know.” Later that day, Lena confronted Grayson in his office. He was on a call, speaking in clipped tones, his back to her. The skyline stretched behind him like a kingdom he ruled without question. He ended the call and turned. “You saw the article.” “I did,” Lena said. “And I want to know what clause they’re talking about.” Grayson’s jaw tightened. “It’s nothing.” “Don’t lie to me.” He walked around the desk, his voice calm but firm. “It’s a standard clause. If you breach the agreement—public scandal, infidelity, anything that damages my reputation—you forfeit the payout.” Lena stared at him. “So I’m one mistake away from losing everything.” “You’re not going to make a mistake.” “That’s not the point, Grayson. You didn’t tell me.” “I didn’t think I needed to.” Lena stepped back. “You think I’m just another asset. Something to manage.” Grayson’s eyes darkened. “You’re not.” “Then treat me like a partner. Not a liability.” Silence stretched between them. Grayson finally spoke. “I’ve spent years building this empire. Every move I make is calculated. Controlled. You—” he paused, “—you’re the first thing I didn’t plan for.” Lena’s breath caught. “I don’t know how to do this,” he admitted. “Not with you.” She looked at him—really looked. Beneath the power and polish was a man who didn’t know how to be vulnerable. And maybe, just maybe, he wanted to try. “I’m not asking you to change overnight,” she said. “But if we’re going to survive this, you need to let me in.” Grayson nodded slowly. “I’ll try.” It wasn’t a promise. But it was a start. That night, Lena sat alone on the balcony, watching the city lights flicker like stars. The wind tugged at her hair, and her thoughts drifted to the contract, the cameras, the whispers. She was falling into something dangerous. Something real. And she wasn’t sure she could stop.
