When Melissa returned home after the exhausting events of the day, Bella was sitting outside on the lawn.
Disbelief hit her as Melissa stared at Bella.
Why was her cat outside? She had never wondered outside before - unless....could it be that someone had let the calico outside?
No, that was ridiculous.
She lived alone and she certainly hadn't let Bella out. She would have remembered doing something like that.
Plus, she knew her neighbors would never let her cat wonder outside by itself.
She slowly walked towards her door, holding an umbrella as if it were a baseball bat. It was a ridiculous thing to use as a weapon but if it was necessary, she would injure the intruder with it.
The door was ajar. Something was wrong with this picture. Though she would normally be brave in this sort of situation, Melissa decided to be cautious.
She picked up Bella, got into the car, locked the doors and called the police. She figured that was probably the best thing to do when something odd like this happened in a quiet neighborhood.
The cops didn't take any time whatsoever to get there.
That was probably one of the benefits of being the friend of someone who had died recently - the police never took long to see what was wrong with you.
They were dressed in their uniforms with one small addition - bulletproof vests.
Melissa shook her head and looked at the cops again.
Had she seen that right? Yup, she had. Right there, on their chests were bulletproof vests.
The men were in her house for what seemed like an eternity. It was past 5 o'clock when she looked at her dashboard in the vehicle. The time had practically flown by and Melissa hadn't even realized it.
She was getting hungry and knew that Bella probably was too. Should she wait until the police came out of her house or should her and Bella go somewhere to eat their dinners.
Finally, at 5:30, the police came out of her house, with a man who looked strangely familiar to Melissa. She wasn't sure why until she caught a glimpse of the man's face.
Immediately, she recognized Perry.
How had he gotten out of jail so soon after being arrested?
