Bad Moon Rising (prologue)

313 Words
Waking up in a pool of sweat is never any fun but when you sweat blood then you are in for a different kind of misery. Mackenzie got out of bed and removed her linens which consisted of a plastic tarp and some old rags. Every since her 21st birthday, she has been living with this disease or whatever it was. Now she is 24, living in a shoebox apartment in downtown Atlanta and wondering if her life will ever get any better.  Mackenzie was up bright and early on this cool November morning and all she could think about was getting to school. Georgia State University was her safe place. Learning was how she was able to forget that she was different. Every since she was little, she had always been odd. From her coal black hair to her amber colored eyes to her almond colored skin, people had always thought she was odd or exotic. Her first foster father found out the hard way that her being exotic ran deeper than her looks. He tried to molest her but ended up peeing in bag and blind. Mackenzie has no recollection of how it happened but when she came to at the tender age of 7, her hands and mouth were covered in gore. Needless to say she was immediately sent back to the orphanage. No one tried to adopt her after that so until she graduated high school, the orphanage was her only home. Getting accepted into college with a full scholarship including room and board made the bullying in high school worth it. Mackenzie was able to find a job that was fulfilling but the pay was less than stellar but it kept a roof over her head. Done with the bachelor's and now on to the master's. Just one year to go and hopefully it would be smooth sailing.
