What did you see before Trevah stopped the process?” I debated if I should answer but I did. I explained about the battle, seeing the planets and then Omegas led into the building.
“After that it cut off.” He held out his hand, and a chair rolled toward him. If it wasn’t for the implant, I would have wondered if he was telekinetic. Instead, the environment reacted to hand gestures.
Pretty cool. Wonder if I’ll be able to do that? “He was wise to keep that information away from you.” He said nothing, and I prodded him to continue.
“The Volardi are of three. What you refer to as Alpha. The warriors, security chiefs, those for whom… physical means are best suited. Men such as myself are Beta. We work and create within the empire.”
“I get it,” I said. “Omegas have the babies.” The side of his face twitched in a quick smile.
“Technically true although nothing more. Baby factories and nothing else. Their role is to carry the offspring. All they areallowed to do .They can never go out without an escort. They cannot learn.” His hands went to his side, and he breathed out slow.
“If it wasn’t for the death of our race, it would almost be a kindness.” He shook his head slightly. “Imagine… to live your life knowing you are nothing more than an incubator.”
“You’re lying.”
“Of course, I can see why you would think so. Such a thing would be horrific, and I’m sure such evil is impossible for you to imagine. Surely your world is at peace and would never subjugate the weak.” His eyes were questioning, and I wondered how much he knew.
If Trevah knew about ‘Happy Days’, I’m sure Klar knew about g******e, war, and all the ugliness of human history. Having a sci-fi background was a curse and a blessing.
It opened my mind enough that I could accept all this without going into a catatonic state. Yet, now that I had my hopes dashed, I couldn’t help but feel the crushing weight of disappointment.
This wasn’t the Federation with all the planets in harmony. This was… cattle. We weren’t harvested for food, but we were still being farmed.
And I’m helping them do it. My heart thumped in my throat and I felt myself grow faint.
“Sedative,” Klar shouted. In my side vision, someone ran in. All I could see was a blur and then another.
One big, another smaller but still larger than I. I think I lost consciousness, but I couldn’t be sure.
Something like pepper and vanilla flowed into my nose and I bolted up with a scream. Melk and Trevah stood at the end of the examination table.
Klar held out a hand. “An adverse reaction to the implant. This incompatibility does not bode well. May I recommend we instead–”
Melk’s scream had no music in it. Only a deep rumbling growl. “Out!”
“The patient–” Melk’s stare never left me, but he spoke to Klar. “I am Alpha. Wait outside.”
Klar’s mouth opened and Trevah spoke. “The Security Chief is attempting to perform his duties. Do you wish to explain to high command how you know them better? Do you wish to argue with me ?”
Klar quickly typed on a monitor with shaky fingers. “Please do not agitate my patient. I will be outside.”
Once the door closed, and Klar was gone, Melk spoke. “What happened?”
“Nothing.”
Melk leaned in and inhaled along my neck. I’d say it was weird although, it was almost comforting. Like being bathed in someone’s aura.
“Lies,” he said. Trevah held up his hand, and the globe flew to his fingertips.
“’Nothing’ set off the alarm.” I don’t think they knew about ‘Good Cop / Bad Cop’ even if that’s what they were doing. It took another minute of prodding before I relented.
I glossed over the planets, but spoke about the… factory. Then what Klar told me. Melk clenched fists beat against his muscled sides. “I’ll throw him in detention.”
Trevah spoke quietly. “I admit that would be a pleasurable sight. However, my warrior. He’s done nothing illegal.” Melk held out his hands and it was enough to make his biceps bulge.
I wasn’t sure if I should be aroused or scared. Both maybe? “So now you know security my Dara?”
“No,” he said with a smile. “But I know he’s the only one that can do the implant. It was his procedure.”
Trevah held out both hands. “True, he overstepped his role. I’m sure a reminder from you will correct that.” Trevah let out a dismissive murmur.
Melk growled. “People like him are sneaky. They hide behind formulas and medicine...”
“... and provide us with spaceships to search the galaxy. Medicines that heal.” Trevah smirked.
“Even VibroBlades that chop off a Gloom’s head with one swipe.” Melk tilted his head and his voice lowered.
“That is most satisfying.” He sighed. “And can we trust him with the Earthing?”
“It’s to his benefit. If he succeeds and there’s a viable pregnancy, he can ask for any boon from the Emperor.”
“Yes, but what about–”
“It’s true,” I said. “You just proved it. Both of you are talking about me like I’m not even here.” I sat up on the examination table and put my hands at my side.
I think I unintentionally flexed. Certainly, I didn’t look imposing. Men like them would – maybe even more so while naked. i think so....maybe so.
