ELORA’S POV The hunt had not gone as well as I had hoped. We came back with enough to feed the settlement through the night and into the following morning, but not the abundance I had pictured when we set out. Still, I had shifted and run and felt the ground blur beneath me, and that was its own kind of relief. I felt loose in my limbs and almost cheerful as we crossed back into camp, the evening settling soft and grey over the tents. Darren was just ahead of me. I quickened my pace to match his. “The elk in the eastern stretch were further out than I expected,” I said, falling into step beside him. “But I got two of them. Clean kills, both.
