"What are you doing, messing around like that? Slow down... Ow!"
Charlotte dragged Dawn by the arm out of the Alpha family's gate, only releasing her after they had walked quite a distance.
Matthew followed, grumbling and cursing under his breath as he chased after them.
Over the years, Charlotte had seen through the true colors of this couple and turned to leave with a cold face.
Dawn hurriedly blocked Charlotte's path. "Things aren't settled yet. Where are you going?"
The sharp cries clashed with the upscale residential environment.
"I've told you many times not to come to the Alpha family anymore, and not to disturb them."
"Is this how you talk to your elders?" Matthew's loud roar nearly startled the birds off the branches. He rolled up his sleeves, hands on hips, pointing at Charlotte's nose. "You ungrateful wretch, now that you've made it, you forget where you came from?"
Dawn looked up at the Alpha family's gate, unable to hide her envy and jealousy. "Charlotte, you live in such a huge mansion, leaving your uncle, aunt, and Stella to live in that tiny thirty-square-meter shack. Don't forget who raised you when you were little."
Seeing the bickering couple, Charlotte's gaze turned icy. "It was my grandmother who raised me. As for who sold me, it was you two."
Dawn was speechless, her face alternating between green and red.
"Just one question, are you going to help your cousin or not?" Matthew yelled, his voice so loud it almost knocked birds off the branches.
Stella, only nineteen this year, was recently expelled from college for misconduct, living off her parents at home with no purpose. Charlotte never expected Matthew to drag his ambitions to the Alpha family.
"I already answered you, if she's capable enough, she can interview through normal channels."
With that, Charlotte turned and walked back into the Alpha family, closing the door behind her amidst Dawn's curses.
...
"What kind of people are they? How dare they come to our house and cause trouble! Such riffraff!"
Back in the villa, Charlotte heard her grandfather toss a cup onto the coffee table with a loud thud.
Though she had grown accustomed to his disdainful words, they still pierced her heart like thorns.
"Charlotte, did your uncle and aunt leave?"
Amanda saw Charlotte in the hallway and quickly interrupted her mother-in-law to prevent her from saying anything worse.
But her grandfather gave Charlotte a sideways glance, snorting coldly.
Charlotte forced a smile at the gentle Amanda, then changed her shoes and walked up to her grandfather. Even though she didn't know beforehand, she still bore the White surname, unable to erase her identity as Matthew's niece.
"I'm sorry about today's incident. They won't bother you again in the future..."
"Ah... Mom, what are you doing?"
Amanda exclaimed, covering her mouth in disbelief at her mother-in-law's actions.
Grandfather put down the empty teacup, glaring coldly at Charlotte, whose hair was dripping with water and cheeks stained with tea leaves. "Another time? Listen to me carefully. Your poor relatives shouldn't come to our Alpha family all the time. They've been freeloading for twenty years, and now they want to join our Alpha family. What a joke!"
The villa's door suddenly creaked open.
"Young master, you're back?" The butler hurried forward as if he had seen a savior.
Charlotte clenched her fists, tears welling up in her eyes from the bitter tea. She turned around and saw a tall figure standing there.
Alpha stood at the door, holding the keys in his hand, the sunlight behind him casting sharp contours on his face.
Charlotte looked at Alpha in his charcoal gray suit, raised her hand to wipe away the droplets on her eyelashes, and stepped out.
"Look at her, look at her, what manners are these?" Grandpa's anger surged. How did the Alpha family end up with this jinx?!
Amanda hurriedly supported the enraged Grandpa. "Mom, calm down, Charlotte didn't mean to..."
"She didn't mean to? It's clear she did it on purpose, wanting to drive me, the old lady, crazy so she can move into this house!" Grandpa's anger rose, his words piercing and out of control.
Charlotte paused at the living room door, stood there for a moment, then suddenly turned back, meeting Grandpa's furious gaze. "If I were really eager to move in, I wouldn't have left back then. Don't forget, I was the one your grandfather designated as the Alpha family daughter-in-law."
"What do you mean?!" Grandpa raised his voice, sounding harsh and uncontrollable.
Charlotte lightly lifted the corners of her lips. "Nothing much, just telling you a fact."
"You... you... you..." Grandpa's eyes rolled back, almost fainting.
Not wanting to stay in this suffocating place any longer, Charlotte ignored Grandpa's increasingly unbearable scolding, turned around, grabbed her bag, and walked to the door, not even pausing when passing by Alpha.
"Amanda, look at her, how can there be such a shameless woman?" Grandpa grabbed his daughter-in-law's sleeve, annoyed. "Our Alpha family is a respectable and prestigious household in San Francisco. This woman from the countryside absolutely cannot enter the Alpha family!"
Amanda stood there in distress, unable to help either side, and couldn't help but look at her son.
Alpha's tall figure, clad in a crisp suit, accentuated his extraordinary temperament. His thin lips pressed into a straight line beneath his straight nose. He stood by the door with a briefcase in one hand and car keys in the other, not uttering a word of comfort.
Grandpa turned his attention to his grandson, thinking about how his outstanding grandson had been tied to the marriage certificate with that mediocre woman, deepening his hatred for Charlotte. He couldn't help but start complaining to Alpha.
"Alpha, you're finally back! That woman just now..."
"If I remember correctly, Grandma, Grandpa also made his fortune from collecting scrap metal when he was young."
Alpha's words made Grandpa's face change abruptly. He couldn't believe that his grandson would help that woman to challenge him. Alpha had already turned and left under her bewildered gaze, not even bothering to change his slippers.
...
Charlotte had just stepped out of the Alpha family's gate when her arm was firmly grabbed from behind.
In the next instant, she was pulled back, and the first thing she saw was a button on a suit.
"Where were you just now?" Alpha's cold voice rang out from above her.
Charlotte looked up, meeting his furrowed brows, and remained silent.
Then followed a long silence.
The two of them looked at each other quietly, neither speaking, while his hand holding her arm never loosened.
Behind Alpha, the passenger door of a champagne-colored Mercedes-Benz opened, and a hot-bodied woman in a red dress leaned against the door. Charlotte recognized that dress, even with just one glance it was enough to leave an indelible mark on her memory, and the license plate of the car made her heart ache dullly.
