‘No’ Kat leant up and looked down at me, her face distraught but very serious ‘This is not your fault, please don’t blame yourself’
I sighed and pulled her back down, holding her close ‘Just rest baby’ I told her ‘Lets not argue about this right now’
After a few seconds I heard her crying again, each tear burnt into my heart and only added to my guilt
‘Shh’ I hushed her ‘Don’t think about it, you did nothing wrong, nothing’
After she was in control again, we remained silent for half an hour, I thought she’d fallen asleep but she shifted and looked at me, her eyes and nose were red
‘Do you remember the first person you killed?’
I closed my eyes in pain as the memory returned to me ‘Yes’ I told her, opening my eyes and looking into her ‘I was 10’
‘10?’
‘It was a rogue’ I told her, hating the memory ‘Or at least he was just on the verge of turning rogue, we could have still saved him, he’d snuck onto our land and my father made me kill him, another lesson on toughening up, I threw up for an hour, you’re doing much better than I did’
‘I wouldn’t say that’ She whispered and looked down ‘I can’t stop seeing his eyes, the way the light seeped away, I did that’
‘You were defending yourself’
‘I always thought I could kill if it was in self-defence’ She told me ‘I was relying on that, it was what I was counting on to help me kill him’
Him? Oh, the man that killed her mother
‘But now’ She went on ‘I don’t know if I can, I don’t want to kill anyone else’
‘SSh’ I hushed her gently again and kissed her forehead ‘If he ever comes near you again, I’ll kill him for you, you don’t have to worry about this’
Katomi looked up at me with a pained expression before she pulled my face down and kissed me, I pulled her closer and deepened the kiss before pulling back and looking into her eyes again
‘MY TURN!’ Kai shouted ‘I want to kiss mate!’
I sighed and let him have control ‘Mate’ Kai purred, rubbing his face against Kat’s before he kissed her roughly, Kat pulled back and shook her head patiently at Kai’s rough nature, then her eyes shifted, Remi took control and Kai kissed them again before once more rubbing his face against hers and purring again.
We remained like this, rubbing against her until she went limp in my arms, I pulled back and realised she’d fallen asleep, so I tucked her up and closed my own eyes.
‘Beau’
‘How is she?’
‘Terrible’ I answered, my voice cracking ‘Did Bronwyn get home alright’
‘She did’ He told me ‘I stayed with her until she fell asleep’
‘Good’ I responded, it would put Kat’s mind at ease to know she was safely at home ‘How was the search?’
‘Nothing’ He told me, sounding frustrated ‘He must have been alone’
‘Theres no way he was alone’ I argued ‘The Queen wouldn’t have sent her son onto enemy territory alone’
‘We’ll keep up the search’ He told me ‘I’ll assign more guards to patrol’
‘And kat’s guards?’
‘Darcy and Liam are both recovering’
‘Good’ I nodded ‘I want to talk to Darcy the second he wakes up, and Natalies family?’
‘They’re devastated of course’ He told me sadly ‘I may have hit her father, so I’m sorry you’ll have to deal with that too when you visit them’
‘Why the f*ck did you hit him?’
‘He said his daughter deserved to die, considering she failed to protect her Luna’
‘WHAT!’
‘Bronwyn gave me more details of what happened’ He explained ‘Natalie didn’t even get a chance to fight, she was hit with the knife and died out on the ground while Kat fought the Fae, I stupidly told this to her father, he wanted to know how she’d died, I should have kept my mouth shut’
‘He’s always been a bastard’ I growled, Her father was one of my top warriors, it’s the reason I chose Nat for one of Kat’s guards, she’d been fighting for years under her father ‘I’ll do more than talk to him, his daughter died trying to protect Kat and Remi, she didn’t fail anyone’
I rubbed my face, I was suddenly very tired ‘What did you do with the Fae?’
‘I had him moved to the morgue’ Beau answered ‘I’m having the body checked’
‘Good’ I nodded ‘I want to know how he got onto the territory unnoticed, there has to be spell or potion in play’
‘Yeah, that’s what I thought’ He told me ‘If we can find out how they do it, we can find a way to detect it’
‘Keep me updated’ I said firmly ‘I’d like to go there in person, but I can’t leave her, not that Kai would let me even if I could’
He was completely focused on watching Kat’s face, not blinking, not moving an inch, just watching her every movement
‘I’ll take care of it’ He assured me
‘Thanks’ I said ‘I also want you and Brae together this coming week sometime, I want to start organising the troops again, we need to go over schedules and funding’
‘Of course,’ He said ‘Let me know when you’re ready’
‘I’ll keep you posted’ I said and cut the link
