Chapter 2: Two Peas In A Pod

789 Words
It had been three weeks since Maya and Ethan first met, but somehow, it felt like they had known each other for years. At first, they were just classmates who happened to get along. Then they started eating lunch together. Then they started walking to class together. Then Ethan somehow became the person Maya looked for every morning when she entered school. Before long, everyone knew them as a pair. “Where's Ethan?” someone would ask Maya. “Probably coming,” she would reply. And whenever someone asked Ethan where Maya was, his answer was always the same. “I don't know. Probably somewhere causing trouble.” Maya always denied it. “I do not cause trouble!” Ethan would laugh. “You literally got us sent out of class yesterday.” “That was your fault!” “You were the one who made the teacher laugh!” “You laughed too!” “Exactly. But I wasn't the one who started it.” Their friendship had become impossible to separate. One Monday morning, Maya walked into the classroom and found Ethan sitting in her usual seat. She stopped in front of him. “Move.” Ethan looked up innocently. “Good morning to you too.” “That is my seat.” “Our seat.” “There is no ‘our seat.’” “There is now.” Maya stared at him. “You're annoying.” “And yet you still came to sit beside me.” She sighed and dropped her bag onto the desk. “Move over.” Ethan moved slightly, giving her just enough space. “You're welcome.” “For what?” “For sharing my seat.” Maya rolled her eyes. During their break, Ethan bought two snacks from the cafeteria and handed one to Maya. She looked at it suspiciously. “Why are you giving me this?” “Because you always steal mine.” “I don't steal your food.” “You do.” “I borrow it.” “You never give it back.” “That's because I forget.” Ethan laughed. “You're unbelievable.” Maya opened the snack. “Thank you.” “Anytime.” Their friendship wasn't only about jokes, though. They talked about almost everything. Maya told Ethan about her favorite songs, the things that annoyed her, and the dreams she had for the future. Ethan told Maya about his family, the things he was afraid of, and the silly things he usually kept to himself. Neither of them felt judged. That was what made their friendship different. One afternoon, Maya was unusually quiet. Ethan noticed immediately. He leaned toward her. “What's wrong?” “Nothing.” “That's a lie.” She looked at him. “How do you know?” “Because I've known you for three weeks.” “That's not long.” “It is when you talk as much as you do.” Maya smiled slightly. “I'm just tired.” Ethan didn't push her. Instead, he quietly placed his bottle of water on her desk. “Drink.” She looked at it. “You sound like my mother.” “Good. Now drink.” Maya laughed and took the bottle. “Thank you.” “See? I'm useful.” “Sometimes.” “Wow. Such appreciation.” She smiled. The two spent the rest of the afternoon talking and laughing. By the time school ended, Maya realized something. She couldn't remember what school had been like before Ethan came along. He had somehow become part of her everyday life so quickly that it felt strange to imagine not having him around. The same was true for Ethan. Whenever something funny happened, Maya was the first person he wanted to tell. Whenever he had a bad day, he knew he could talk to her. They became partners for assignments, teammates during school activities, and each other's biggest supporters. Their classmates started giving them nicknames. “Two peas in a pod,” one of their friends called them. Maya laughed when she heard it. “We're not that inseparable.” Ethan looked at her. “Really?” “Yes.” “Then let's test it.” “How?” “I won't talk to you tomorrow.” Maya's eyes widened. “You can't do that.” Ethan burst out laughing. “See?” Maya realized what he had done and pushed his shoulder. “You're so irritating!” He laughed even harder. They walked home together that afternoon, arguing about something completely unimportant. Neither of them noticed how close they had become. They were simply best friends. At least, that's what they both believed. For now.
