Chapter 13 The Power Shift
I walked into the room. It fell silent. That was good. It meant they were all paying attention to me. I did not hesitate. I took my time walking to the head of the conference table. Every step I took was steady and controlled. I was not nervous. I was confident.
I owned the room. I owned my confidence. I did not borrow it from anyone. I put my file on the table. Sat down. The executives across from me straightened up in their seats. Some of them looked at each other. They were not sure what to make of me.
Ethan leaned back in his chair. He was watching me with interest. He knew I had something to say.. Today I was going to say it.
"Let's get started, " I said. "We need to talk about the merger. There are some problems with the way it is set up." A man on the left frowned. "We already looked at the numbers, " he said. "No, " I said. "You looked at the surface numbers. I looked at the risks."
The room was quiet. People were listening to me. They were paying attention. The man who spoke up earlier looked at the file I gave him. His face changed as he read it. "This is not what we were told, " he said.
I leaned back in my chair. I let the weight of what I said settle in. "If we do not fix this both companies will lose money " I said. Ethan nodded slightly. He was impressed.
The executive who spoke up earlier looked at me. "What do you suggest we do?" he asked. I slid another file across the table. "We need to change the way we are doing this. We need to be more careful."
The room was quiet again. People were thinking. They were considering what I said. Then Victor spoke up. "And whose side does this put at a disadvantage?" he asked. I looked at him. I was calm. I was not afraid of him. "Yours, " I said.
The room was quiet again. People were surprised. Victor did not react immediately.. I saw it. I saw the tension in his body. He was not happy. "Explain, " he said. His voice was steady.. I could hear the anger underneath.
I held his gaze. I was not afraid of him. "We are taking on much risk, " I said. "We need to be more careful." Victor's eyes narrowed. "You are assuming we will fail, " he said. "I am preparing for it, " I said.
The room was quiet again. People were thinking. They were considering what I said. Victor leaned back in his chair. He was studying me. He was trying to understand me. "Implement her plan " he said suddenly. The room was surprised. People started talking. They started making notes.
The meeting ended thirty minutes later. People were getting up. They were talking.. I stayed seated. I was organizing my files. I was in control. Victor walked over to me. "You were impressive, " he said. I looked up at him. I was calm. I was not afraid of him. "Thank you, " I said.
Victor walked around the table. He stopped in front of me. "You took over the room, " he said. I looked up at him. I was not smiling. I was not proud of myself. I was just doing my job. "I did my job, " I said.
Victor's eyes lingered on me. He was trying to understand me. "You used to hesitate, " he said. I stood up. I was not going to talk about the past. "I learned not to " I said. Victor let out a breath. "Clearly " he said.
We stood there for a moment. Then Victor spoke up. "You didn't just change the plan " he said. "You changed the direction." I looked at him. I was calm. I was not afraid of him. "Yes " I said. "I did."
Victor's tone changed. He was not calm anymore. "You should have talked to me first, " he said. I tilted my head. "Would it have changed anything?" I asked. Victor's jaw tightened. "That's not the point, " he said.
I held his gaze. Then looked straight into his eyes. "It is " I said. "You don't trust my judgment, " he said. "I don't rely on it " I said calmly.
Victor stepped closer to me. He was not aggressive.. He was deliberate. "You're pushing boundaries, " he said... "I'm setting them, " I replied.
We stood there for a moment. Then Victor spoke up. "You've changed, " he said. "You're not the woman I married." I calmly looked at him. I didn't move. Because he didn't lie, I was no longer the same woman he married.. "No, " I said. "I'm not."
The words settled between us. They were final. They were clear.. For the first time Victor did not argue. He did not push. He did not question. He just stood there. Looking at me. Like he was trying to understand something that no longer made sense to him.
I picked up my files. I walked past him. This time around, I didn't turn back, I was in control... For the first time Victor did not stop me. He did not call my name.. I felt it. I felt the shift in the air. The quiet realization that he was no longer in control.
That really made
me feel like I was a threat.
A big threat.
