"Michael!!"
Michael turned around and saw his mother, seated on the couch.
"Mummy, you called me?" Michael asked.
"Yes. Where do you think you are going to?" Mrs Brenda asked.
"Ermm... mum, I'm going to Sonia house," Michael replied.
Mrs Brenda face turned stern. "Michael, you want to disobey me, right? I told you to stay away from Sonia. Now go to your room!"
"Please, mummy, Sonia needs my help for her math assignment," Michael pleaded.
"Michael, I said you should go to your room!" Mrs Brenda shouted.
Michael reluctantly went to his room. He lay on the bed, thinking of a way to sneak out of the house.
"How will I just sneak out of this house now? Sonia needs my help seriously," Michael asked himself.
Just then, there was a knock on the front door. Mrs Brenda, who was sitting in the sitting room, stood up to answer the knock. Mrs Brenda opened the door and saw Sonia standing there, holding a book clutched under her armpit.
"Ma, good evening," Sonia greeted.
"Good evening, Sonia. I hope there is no problem," Mrs Brenda asked.
"No problem, ma. It's just that I came to see Michael to help me with my math assignment. Is he at home?" Sonia asked.
"Yes, but he is sleeping now," Mrs Brenda replied.
Sonia was sad to hear that Michael was asleep and must had forgotten that he promised to help her with her assignment.
"Oh... okay, ma. Thank you," Sonia replied and walked away.
Sonia entered the sitting room with a sad face. Her mother, who was operating her phone, looked up and noticed her countenance.
"Sonia, what's wrong? Why is your face not bright?" Mrs Justina asked.
"Mum, Michael is asleep, and I don't know how to solve the math problems," Sonia answered.
"Let me take a look at the math problems," Mrs Justina said.
Sonia sat beside her mother and opened the book. Mrs Justina eyes went through the math problems, and she also went through the examples given. That was how she was able to understand the math problems.
Mrs Justina explained the math problems while Sonia listened attentively and understood all that her mother explained.
"Thank you, mum. You're my saver," Sonia said.
"You're welcome, darling," Mrs Justina replied.
Sonia stood up and went to her room to solve the math problems.
Michael tossed and turned on his bed, feeling guilty and worried about Sonia. He had promised to help her with her math assignment, but now his mother had told her that he was asleep. He knew Sonia would be disappointed and feel bad.
Michael thought to himself, "Why did my mum have to tell Sonia that I was asleep? Now Sonia will think I didn't care about helping her."
He felt hurt, knowing that he had let Sonia down. Michael wanted to find a way to make it up to her, but he didn't know how.
The next day at school during break, few students gathered at the canteen buying snacks. Michael stood at the front of his class on the third floor, and he sighted Sonia at the canteen buying snacks. Michael immediately dashed down, descended the stairs, and got out of the school building. He headed to the canteen and walked up to Sonia.
"Hi, Sonia," Michael greeted.
Sonia, who was focused on discussing with the canteen seller, turned and faced Michael.
"Ah, Michael," Sonia said in surprise.
"Sonia, I'm sorry for yesterday. I didn't really mean to disappoint you. Just that I slept off. Did you get punished by your math teacher?" Michael asked.
"Not really, my mom helped me out," Sonia replied.
"Ah, thank God," Michael said, heaving a sigh of relief.
"Yes," Sonia replied and turned to the seller. "Ma, give us two donuts and two Caprisun juices."
"Okay," the seller replied.
The canteen seller handed Sonia the snacks and juices, and she paid for them. Michael and Sonia walked to a quiet corner of the canteen, away from the crowd.
"Thanks for understanding, Sonia. I feel really bad about yesterday," Michael said, taking a bite of his donut.
"It's okay, Michael. I know you didn't mean to disappoint me," Sonia replied, sipping her juice.
Michael smiled, feeling relieved that Sonia had forgiven him.
"So, did you understand the math problems your mom helped you with?"Michael asked
"Yeah, I did. My mom explained it really well.."Sonia replied
"Alright."Michael grinned
Just then the bell rang and they hurried to their various classes
When school dismissed. Michael and Sonia were strolled home, They passed by two women and overheard the women gossiping about Sonia mother.
"Why will Mummy Sonia be begging on the street? I just stopped her from begging, and she has gone home," one of the women said.
"Me, I'm surprised to see her beg, but she isn't poor, nah, she is living comfortably, then why will she beg?" the other woman said.
"I wonder oo," the first woman replied.
Sonia was hurt by what the women were saying.
"Sonia let's go,we don't need to listen to what they're saying"Michael said
"No.Just wait for me"Sonia replied and walked up to the women.
