She’s Not Marked

Darren’s POV:

Why could father possibly want to see me? Well he did invite me over to his party so that was understandable, but why Maddie? I didn’t think he even knew about her. It was probably Veronica, she told father everything.

‘ Right this way? ’, Veronica said as she led us both to where my father was. He was chatting with a few other people.

‘ Here they are daddy ’, Veronica said calling his attention to us. He excused himself from the people he was talking to, then turned over to us.

He gave off an excruciating aura and that’s coming from me, a fellow vampire. I couldn’t imagine how Maddie would have felt. I looked over at her and she seemed… normal. She didn’t seem intimidated by his presence at all.

‘ Hello Darren ’, my father said to me. I looked at my father, who was a six foot five man, he was huge. Even for me.

‘ Hello father ’, I said back to him. Everyone referred to my father as Lord Fredrick, Veronica refers to him as daddy, as if she’s a spoilt little girl, which she kind of is but I refer to him as father. My father and I don’t have the best relationship, given what he did to me in the past. I thank God everyday that Veronica intervened on that very day.

‘ I haven’t heard from you in a while ’, he said. I kind of made sure of that. ‘ So how are you enjoying the party? ’, he asked.

‘ I’m enjoying it quite well ’, I replied then took a sip of champagne.

‘ So daddy. Meet Darren’s pet ’, Veronica said out of nowhere as she shrugged Maddie, but all Maddie did was smile. I don’t think Veronica liked Maddie so much.

Father takes a glance of Maddie. ‘ I didn’t know you got a pet Darren ’, he said. ‘ When did you purchase her? ’, he asked. I could feel Maddie irk as he asked this.

‘ About a month ago ’, I replied.

‘ Hmm ’, he moved closer to Maddie then examined her body quickly. ‘ I don’t seem to see a mark on her ’, he said. I was afraid he would bring this up and he did. Veronica smiled as he did.

I looked at him as I tried to come up with an excuse but I couldn’t. I finally took a sigh then replied. ‘ No father ’, I said. I looked at Maddie who seemed a little bit confused by all we were saying.

‘ You buy a pet and you don’t mark her. Don’t you know what could happen to her ’, he said then laughed. I knew exactly what could happen but Maddie who stood beside me was clueless and I was sure she was wondering what he meant.

‘ I am well aware of what could happen father ’, I said to him.

Maddie’s eyes widened more and more as we discussed about her but she had no idea what we were talking about her. She couldn’t take it anymore, ‘ Sorry my Lord. But please what could happen? ’, she finally asked.

Veronica laughed then placed her head close to her neck and whispered, ‘ Well if you aren’t marked, anyone can take you ’. Maddie gasped a bit then Veronica continued, ‘ Even though Darren purchased you, he hasn’t marked you. And that means any vampire who wants to can still mark you as his ’.

Maddie gulped. ‘ When you say mark. What do you mean? ‘, Maddie asked.

‘ Bite you girl ‘, my father said. ‘ The only reason vampires haven’t attacked you yet is because I’m his father. But once a vampire that’s strong enough decides to fight for you and eventually bites you. Then you’re no longer Darren’s ’, he finished.

I stared at father angrily as he said all this, Maddie was scared, she didn’t show it but I could tell.

My father looked at me then grinned. ‘ So Darren, would you like to take a stroll down memory lane ’, he said as he went towards Maddie and wrapped his arm around her. She shook in fear.

‘ Stop father! ’

‘ Bite her ’, he said.

‘ Father not here please ’, I pleaded.

Veronica stood and took a glass of champagne as all this happened.

‘ If you don’t, I’ll give the men in this room permission to claim her ’, he said. He pulled her closer to himself, ‘ Or I could just have her for myself ’, he said with his fangs out.

‘ Father please ’, I pleaded but he had obviously made up his mind already.

He bent his head to her neck, I pitied Maddie. She shook in fear and sobbed, that was all she could do.

His fangs got closer to her neck. She turned her face the other way as he got even closer.

‘ Lord Fredrick ’, one of the attendant called for him.

He pulled his face away in annoyance. I sighed as he did.

‘ What? ’, he screamed to the attendant.

The attendant shook in fear, ‘ The Dominican’s have arrived and they request to see you ‘, he struggled to say.

He huffed then let go of Maddie who began panting with her tears in her eyes immediately he did. I couldn’t bear to see her like that.

‘ I’ll be back ’, father said. He adjusted his suit then went with the attendant.

I immediately turned back to face Veronica. ‘ How could you do that? ’, I asked her angrily.

She gave a face as though she didn’t understand what I was talking about but I was sure she did. This whole scene wreaked of Veronica. ‘ I don’t understand what you’re talking about ’, she said as she took a sip from her cup then looked away.

‘ Oh. Yes you do! ’, I screamed angrily. ‘ Why? ’, I screamed again. ‘ Today you’re helping me, the next you’re setting me- ’.

‘ Why do you care about what happens to the pet so much? ’, she interrupted quickly. ‘ Or have you forgotten that’s all she is? You shouldn’t care so much what happens to her since you could always get a new one ’, she yelled.

I boiled in anger. I didn’t know what to say. ‘ Yes she’s just a pet. But she’s my pet. And marking her is my choice to make. Not yours, not fathers ’, I yelled back.

I grabbed Maddie by her arm. ‘ Come on, let’s go ’, I said as I pulled her with me and stormed off.

‘ She’s going to be the end of you Darren ’, Veronica said from the distance.

I ignored her and kept moving forward as I shrugged some vampires from my way.

I finally stopped then I turned to Maddie. ‘Are you alright?’, I asked her.

She was still shaking. ‘ Yeah, yeah I’m alright ’, she stuttered.

I knew going for that party was a bad idea.

I took a deep breath. ‘I’m sorry you had to go through that’, I said to her, the exact same words I said to Lady Berta years ago. The anger I felt for my father grew, but the anger I felt towards myself was more. I hated that I couldn’t stand up to him. I hated that I always felt weak around him. I hated that I just stood there and pleaded… again.

‘ What’s wrong? ’, Maddie asked.

I looked at her then sighed, ‘ It’s nothing ’, I replied.

‘ Are you bummed you couldn’t stand up to your father? ’, she asked. Wow, now she was the one reading my mind.

I don’t know why I did but I suddenly opened up to her. ‘Yeah, kind of’, I said then gave an obviously fake smile.

‘ Isn’t he like really strong? ’, she asked.

‘ What do you mean? And how do you know that? ‘, I asked her.

‘ Well he said the reason I hadn’t been attacked by other vampires was because of him ’, she said.

‘ Oh, yeah ’, I let out.

‘ It must suck though ’, she said.

I looked at her and raised my brows. ‘ What ?’, I said then chuckled.

‘ Well that the almighty Lord Darren isn’t so mighty all the time ’, she said then laughed. I should have been mad but I couldn’t help but laugh too.

‘ Well you should have seen yourself. The feisty Maddie was in tears ’, I said then laughed.

‘ Hey ’, she said as she her mood got dull and then she frowned.

‘ Oh, I didn’t mean to. I was just joking ’, I said quickly.

‘ I’m just messing with you ’, she said as she started laughing hard. She was just faking.

I hissed and then joined in as we both laughed hard.

Our eyes locked, she shrugged a part of her hair away and smiled. I smiled back.

‘ Hey, I love this song ’, she said as the DJ changed the song.

‘ Would you like to dance ’, I said as I stretched my hand towards her.

She hesitated at first but then she took my hand.

I twirled her into my arms.

She placed her hands on my shoulder and then we fell in step, letting the rhythm of the song control our movements.

I looked down at her and smiled, she smiled back. We continued dancing slowly to the song.

Her eyes shined and a smile spread across her face. ‘ You’re not so bad yourself ’, she said then smirked

‘ I paid for your dance lessons. And I could dance way before then’, I argued.

She laughed. ‘ I know that. But that’s not what I mean ‘, she looked directly into my eyes then smiled. ‘I mean you’re a good person’, she said.

‘ Oh ’, I said back. I didn’t know what to say. ‘So I’m no longer the blood sucking leach’, I finally said then smiled.

This made her laugh. She looked at me then smiled, ‘ Thank you Darren ’, she said. That was really sudden. ‘ For everything ’, she continued.

I was speechless.

‘ And I’m sorry for not trusting you ’, she finally finished then smiled. I smiled back at her.

I swirled her out of my hands then pulled her back to my chest. She rested on my chest as she looked up at me. She wrapped her her around my neck as she looked up at me.

Every other vampire was dancing but it felt like it was just us in the room. We slowed dance for a while, I couldn’t help but notice her pretty she was. Her eyes glistened and her lips were, they were perfect. I couldn’t help but stare at them. I moved my face closer to hers and she did the same, and then we kissed.

We parted lips and then we gazed deeply into each other’s eyes.

‘ Uhm ’, she said as she gulped.

‘ Uhm, yeah. I need to uhm… ’, I said as we moved away from each other a bit. Things had gotten weird.

‘ Uhm champagne? ’, I asked her.

‘ Yes, thank you ’, she said.

‘ Alright then ’, I stuttered. ‘ Wait here ’, I said to her as I left to grab a glass of champagne.

Oh my God! What just happened? Why did I do that. That was the one thing I was avoiding, I screamed inside. I couldn’t believe I just kissed Maddie.

I got to the mini bar and requested for two glasses of champagne. The waiter handed it to me and then I went back to meet Maddie but when I got there she wasn’t there.

‘ Maddie. Maddie! ‘, I called out but she didn’t respond. Did she go to the bathroom? I called for her again but she didn’t reply again.

I waited for a while but she still didn’t return. I began getting worried. I handed the glasses of champagne to a waiter then left to look for her.

I called for her as I walked around.

‘ Anything the matter Lord Fredrick? ’, a fellow vampire asked

‘ No, everything’s alright ’, I replied.

I continued searching for her but I still couldn’t find her. She didn’t just walk off, someone probably did something and the whole thing wreaked of Veronica.

‘ Oh, hey Darren ’, Veronica said from behind me. Speak about the Devil.

‘ What did you do to her? ’, I asked immediately.

‘ Oh I didn’t do anything to her Dare bear ’, she said. ‘But you might need to be quick before something really happened to her’, she continued then smirked.

I knew it, something happened to Maddie. ‘What did you do Veronica?’, I asked sharply.

‘ Like I said, I didn’t do anything. But you might need to hurry or else someone will ’, she said again.

‘ Ahh! ’, I screamed. ‘ Where is she? ’.

She pointed her finger up. Maddie was upstairs. I quickly went to the stairs and ran upstairs fast. I looked through all the rooms as fast as I could but I was yet to find Maddie.

It was just one door left to open. I went to the door and swung it open, and there she was, on the floor as a vampire was about to plunge his fangs into her neck.

I appeared to where the vampire was and pushed him away from her.

He hissed at me. ‘ What? ‘, he questioned.

‘ She’s my pet.’, I said quickly.

‘ B-but I heard she wasn’t marked ’, he said. He was shaking, well I just stopped him from taking dinner.

‘ Well you heard wrong’ , I said as my fangs and claws began growing out.

He spread his hands as he prepared to attack me.

‘ Stop! ’, someone at the door screamed. It was father.

The other vampire looked back and immediately he saw who it was went on his knees. ‘ Lord Fredrick ’, he said as he bowed for him.

‘ Get out of here ’, father said.

The other vampire shook then ran through the door as fast as he could.

Father looked at me in disappointment as I knelt beside Maddie. ‘ This will be the first of many ’, he said then he turned to leave, right behind him was Veronica. I knew she had something to do with this.

I carried Maddie who was fast asleep. I phoned the driver and immediately he arrived, we left the party.
