Maddie’s POV:

I finally asked him. I stared at him and took deep breaths as I waited for his reply. He looked at me with a confused look but one that said he said he knew exactly what I was talking about. He couldn’t deny it.

‘ So who is she? ’, I asked again.

‘ How did you know about that? ‘, he asked me.

So he really had another pet?

‘ Did you go through my things? ‘, he asked as he stared at me with his bloody eyes.

I ignored his questions. ‘ Who is she? Your previous pet right? Even though you said you didn’t have one ’, I said with a raised tone.

Some vampires had already began staring at us but I didn’t care. ‘ Shut up Maddie! ’, Darren said pulling myself closer to him. ‘ We’ll talk about it later. People are here so get it together ’, he finished.

I really didn’t want to, but I didn’t know what could happen if other vampires found out I was speaking to my master in that manner. So out of nothing but fear I stopped talking.

I looked up at the other vampire and then back at Darren, I kept my voice as docile as possible as I said, ‘ Thank you for giving me the opportunity to speak my Lord ’, I blurted out. Darren looked at me not really understanding what I was doing until he looked around and noticed some vampires looking over at us.

He grabbed my arm and pulled me out of the scene to somewhere a little more private.

‘ Do you realize you just disrespected me? ’, Darren was enraged. ‘ Do you realize you just embarrassed me in front of almost everyone here. Do you? ’, he screamed. I couldn’t look him in the eye. He really was pissed, but so was I. ‘ I think I have tolerated too much from you and you no longer know your place ’, he finished.

He was still complaining when ‘I’m sorry’, slipped out of my mouth. I don’t know why I said it, maybe I said it because I just wanted him to shut up or maybe I said it because he was right, and it was true. He had tolerated too much from me. No other vampire could have treated me how he had treated me all this times. I literally saw three girls on a leash on that day. So even though he was a lying blood sucking leach he was far better than the rest so I said it again, ‘I’m sorry’.

Surprisingly it made him calm down. He took a deep breath.

A vampire came to where we were with his pet. Could his timing be any worse?

‘ Lord Darren! Congratulations on the expansion of the business ’, he said as he pulled his human pet leash, signaling her yo bow for Darren. I felt disgusted and thankful even more.

‘ Congratulations Lord Darren ’, the young lady said as she bowed down to Darren.

‘ Oh. Thank you ’, Darren said to her.

The vampire began laughing. ‘ So, Lord Darren. Has your pet ever spent time with another of her… king ’

Darren shrugged elegantly then looked at me. ‘ No. Maddie doesn’t get along with others so we’ll ’, he said.

He eyed me oddly. ‘ Really? But she seems so polite ’, he said. Was that a shade to Darren?

‘ Is that so? ’, Darren asked, it was obvious he got the hint and was getting angry.

The vampire takes a closer look at me. ‘Your little pet stands more prideful than she should’, he said.

My eyes narrowed slightly. ‘Well I am proud’, I said.

‘ Hmm ’, the vampire let out.

‘ I stand before my master in a beautiful gown. Is that not something to be proud of? I am proud to be his pet ’, I said.

Darren was still, and quiet.

The vampire began laughing and then smacked his own pet’s back, ‘ See that Mice. That there is a pet and a woman rolled into one. Lord Darren you really must tell me how you were able to train this pretty little thing ’.

I held myself from saying first don’t name her after a f*****g animal, but hey, Darren also called me Goofy so who was I to talk.

Darren sneered at him, ‘ Well for a start, I didn’t name her Mice ’.

I nearly smirked.

The pet, Mice, went red and tried in vain to cover some of her scantily clad form.

I frowned as I wanted to tell her that it would be okay. But what did I know?

She was obviously new to the whole thing. Poor girl.

I glanced at Darren who gave me a little push towards the girl, he obviously understood my internal dilemma.

I approached the girl with cautious steps and smothered her hair back. ‘ You’re very pretty ’, I said to her.

She blushed, ‘ thank you ’.

The owner let go of her leash. ‘ Before you get any tears on my expensive suit ’, he said as he went to get a drink. ‘ I’ll be back ’, he screamed from a distance.

She bowed to Darren once her eyes locked his.

‘ Would you like anything? ’, I asked her. ‘ Perhaps anything to eat, or drink? ’, I continued

She looked away shyly and nodded.

‘ What’s wrong? ’, I asked.

‘ I can’t ’, she said. I could feel the fear in her heart.

I moved closer to her and patted her back. ‘ Don’t be scared. Not here, Lord Darren is very kind and generous ’, I said to her.

She looked up at Darren. He noticed she was looking at him.

He sighed, ‘ Sure whatever ’.

Her face glistened with joy.

I left to get her a plate of food and a drink and handed it to her.

Immediately I handed the plate to her, she began devouring the food with her hand. It was obvious she hadn’t eaten well in a while. I watched as she ate and I felt really sad for her.

‘ Come on I can sho- ‘, I tried to say but was interrupted by her heartless master.

‘ Oh, I see you’ve given my little Mice food Lord Darren. I am grateful ’, he said. He grabbed her leash and yanked it a bit. ‘ Come on now Mice. We have to go ’, he continued.

He yanked her leash but she stayed still. What was she doing? She had her head faced to the ground with her first clenched up. Was she trying to rebel. Please no.

‘ Is something the matter Mice? ’, he screamed. What was she doing. I prayed for her to stop, she definitely doesn’t want to anger her master. He could kill her.

Darren moved towards her, he nudged her gently and whispered something into her ear.

‘Sorry Lord Timothy, seems like she took my command of don’t move at all a little too seriously’, Darren said and then they both laughed.

He yanked her leash again and this time she went with him. Darren just saved her life. I looked at him as he stared at them as they left.

I looked away from Darren and watched as they walked off, until they were both out of sight.

I felt bad for her and hoped nothing bad happened to her.

Darren turned back and started walking away. I ran after him.

‘What did you say to her?’, I asked him.

He didn’t answer and kept walking.

‘Come on, you saved her life Darren. What did you do?’, I asked again.

He turned to me, ‘ That’s Lord Darren for you ’.

I paused then took a deep breath. ‘I apologize…. Lord Darren’, I said. ‘Please what did you say to her that made her obey… Lord Darren’.

‘Not that it’s any of your business but I told her it’ll be pointless if she threw her life away just because she was angry at the moment’, he said.

I took a deep breath. Yes he was a vampire, yes he had his issues, yes he was annoying sometimes but Darren was a good person. I didn’t care anymore if I was his first pet or his thousandth. I was lucky it was he that bought me and not any other vampire.

‘I have never had any other pet’, Darren said as he took a cup of champagne. ‘I have plenty more of those files you saw. The auction house sends them to me every time they hold an auction so I could come and make a purchase if I was interested in any of the girls’. I immediately believed and couldn’t believe my ear when he said this. So he had been saying the truth all this time. I was relieved but almost immediately something else made my heart heavy also.

‘Did they send my file to you too before you went?’, I asked.

‘What?’

‘Did you go to the auction house after you saw my file and you were interested in me’.

I stood still as I waited for his answer.

‘No’, he finally said. ‘I only saw you when I just got there. The file I have of you serves as a receipt and not an invite’, he finished.

‘Oh, okay’, I said.

‘Yeah’, he said as he proceeded to keep walking again.

‘Darren!’, someone behind us screamed. I recognized that voice anywhere. I could tell the voice from a thousand other voices, it was Veronica.

Darren turned back to look at her.

‘Hello Veronica’, he greeted.

‘Hello’, she said as she hugged him. ‘Hello’, she said again as she turned to me, but mine wasn’t a cheerful hello like Darren’s, rather a dull and spiteful hello.

‘Not to best around the bush. Father sent me to get you’, she said sharply.

‘Oh’, he didn’t sound so happy to see his father. ‘Alright. Wait here Maddie’, he said.

Veronica smiled as she turned to me, ‘Oh no. Her too’.
