Maddie’s POV:
I woke up with a slight headache. I sat on the bed and looked by my side expecting to see Darren but for the first time, no one was there. It was just me in the room. Memories of what happened last night flashed by, and that was when I remembered; Darren and I kissed last night. Oh my God! Maddie how could you do this? Oh my God, oh my God. I tried to remember what happened after that but I couldn’t. The only thing I could remember was Darren going off to get a drink and that was it, I couldn’t remember any other thing after that.
I racked my brain trying to remember but still nothing. But the kiss kept replaying in my head, I wondered what he might have thought of it. It probably meant nothing to him. Gosh I couldn’t believe I just gave myself away like that, to a vampire no less.
There was a knock on the door. Was it him? I brushed my hair with my fingers quickly. Immediately I noticed I was putting in an effort to look good for him I scattered them back with my hands.
‘ Come in ’, I finally said.
The door opened but it wasn’t him, it was one of the maids. ‘ Good morning miss Maddie ’, she said as she stood by the door. ‘ Breakfast is ready , she finished.
‘ Oh, oh. Give me a minute ’, I said as I jumped out of bed.
‘ Take all the time you need miss Maddie, we’ll cover the food for you. ’, she said as she left and closed the door behind her.
I was still in the gown I wore the previous night. I put it off then, grabbed a towel then went straight to the bathroom. I sat in the hot tub as the kiss kept replaying in my mind. I tried to shrug it off but I couldn’t. I couldn’t imagine seeing him today. Things would be so awkward and weird. I finally got out the hot tub, I went into the shower after then dried up.
I got out into the bathroom and back into the room, I dried my hair then sat to do my daily make up routine but then I remembered Darren said I no longer needed to do all those. There was joy in my heart. I let my hair out then went to my wardrobe to pick out what I would wear. I was surprised to see that all the Princess dressed had been replaced with normal clothes even though there were still some of them there, I couldn’t help but stare and loathe at the one I wore the first day I got here. But still I squealed in happiness and even jumped around for a few seconds.
I went back to the wardrobe to pick out what I would wear. I picked a gray sweatpants and a baggy Tee. I put them on and I didn’t look half as elegant like I used to but I loved it. It was free and I didn’t look like I was trying to audition for a job in Disney World.
I went out of my room and walked downstairs. I began feeling anxious as I got closer to the dining room. I kept thinking about how awkward it would be see if I saw Darren. I finally got to the dining room but he wasn’t there. Not like he came and left, it didn’t look like he came at all, there was only food on my side of the table.
I went to sit down, and as I looked up and didn’t see him, I was surprised and I didn’t feel the relief I was meant to. I mean, I get to eat by myself without the blood sucking leech in front of me, I was meant to be filled with joy but I really couldn’t understand how I felt.
I ate my food silently, with the sound of the clanking plate echoing the room as I did. After eating I went back to my room.
I began to wonder if Darren had eaten finish before I came or if he didn’t come to the table to eat at all. Was he avoiding me? I was probably just overreacting. I tried to push the thought aside by turning on the TV. It worked for a few minutes but then the thought kept coming back. Could Darren really be avoiding me? I switched the TV off then went back downstairs. I saw one of the maid and stopped her.
‘ Did Darren come down to eat this morning? ’, I asked.
She stared at me for a few seconds before she finally answered. ‘ No, Lord Darren had his food served to him in his study room ’, she said.
‘ Oh, oh ‘, I stuttered. ‘ Alright. Thanks ’, I said to the maid.
‘ Is anything the matter Miss Maddie? ’, she asked me.
‘ Oh, no, no. Everything’s alright ’, I replied.
‘ Alright ’, she said as she left.
I wasn’t certain for sure but I felt he was probably avoiding me.
I thought about confronting him but I couldn’t because I didn’t know for sure. I went back to my room and waited patiently till it was lunch time.
Almost immediately it was time for lunch, I had gotten out my room, I even met the maid that was about to get me before she got there.
I rushed downstairs and my food had already been set, but still, no Darren. I started feeling he was ignoring me even more but I couldn’t know for sure, it was actually too early. So I waited for a while before I started eating but I still didn’t see him. I finally ate and went back upstairs.
I couldn’t believe he was avoiding me. Yes, I knew it would feel awkward when I saw him but I still got angry that he was avoiding me. What was he thinking? That he would avoid me till I died? Or maybe he would sell me off so he wouldn’t see me anymore.
I began remembering some other things that happened at the party. I remembered Darren’s father talking about the whole marking thing, even though I didn’t fully understand I knew I was marked yet and that any other vampire that had the balls could come and try and mark me as his… or hers. My body writhed in both fear and disgust as I remembered that I was almost marked by Darren’s father. So the first vampire to bite me will be the vampire that marked me. It was scary just thinking about it.
Night finally came and then I went to get dinner and once again Darren wasn’t there. I couldn’t take it. I didn’t settle to eat, I went back upstairs then knocked on the door of his study room.
‘ Come in ’, he said from inside. I immediately went in.
‘ Why are you avoiding me? ’, I asked sharply.
‘ What? ’, he questioned.
‘ You’ve been avoiding me since this morning. Is it because of the dumb kiss, well it was a mistake and I was a little drunk. So why are you avoiding me. Are you trying to process the documents to sell me off or what’, I blurted out.
Darren stood from where he was seated. ‘ What makes you think I’m avoiding you pet? ’, he asked then he glared at me as he waited for my reply. ‘ Why would I ever avoid you in my own house? ‘, he asked again before I could reply
I paused for a while as I thought about what I would say. I shouldn’t have rushed in so rashly. ‘ You’ve been having your food sent to your study all day, and you didn’t sleep in the room ’, I blurted out without thinking.
‘ I thought you hated it when I sleep with you, and when I eat with you ’, he said. ‘ And now that I don’t you complain. There’s just no pleasing you Goofy ’.
I was speechless.
‘ Please close the door on your way out ’, he said as he went back to his chair.
But that was when it hit me, he had still not answered the question. ‘ You’ve still not answered the question ’, I said to him.
He looked up at me. ‘ What? ’
‘ You didn’t answer the question. Yes I don’t like sleeping or eating with you, but it still doesn’t answer the question. So… Why are you avoiding me? ’, I asked again.
He thought about what he would say for a while then took a deep breath. ‘ I’m not avoiding you Maddie. I’m just busy with work ’, he said.
I looked over at his desk and there were actually a lot of files on it. So he could really be saying the truth.
I felt foolish. ‘ Oh ’, I let out. I turned back to leave the room.
‘But there are some things we should talk about’, he said behind me.
I turned back to look at him. ‘ Like? ’, I asked.
He closed the file in front of him then he stood up again. ‘ Everything ’.
What did he mean by everything? ‘ What do you mean? ’, I finally asked him.
‘ I mean the kiss Maddie, your mark. Everything ’, he said then let out a sigh, he seemed a little frustrated.
‘ Oh, okay ’, I said as I went a little bit closer. ‘ The kiss was a mistake. Something terrible had just happened and we both had too much to drink and it meant nothing ’, I said.
He paused for a while, ‘ Yeah, yeah totally, it meant nothing ’, he said.
‘ Yeah ’, I said back as I tried to force a laugh.
‘ Then there’s the bite ’, he said. This raised the tension in the room.
I faked a laugh again, ‘What’s there to talk about. You don’t want to bite me and I sure as hell don’t want to get beaten, so there’s nothing to worry about. Your father’s incident was just a one time thing. Now I know not to leave the mansion ever again right?’.
‘ Another vampire tried biting you yesterday Maddie ’, he said as he looked away.
My jaw dropped as he said this. ‘ What? ’.
